perhaps even the family pet. Many elderly people are lonely and love company. 2. Make a list of 40 people who would love to hear the sound of your voice. Call them, one person a day, and tell them that you love them. 3. Watch someones children so that he of she can have a break. 4. Give 15 percent of you weekly salary to a family that has no income. 5. Gather a group of friends and volunteer to do house repairs for single parents, elderly people or any one in your parish who needs help. 6. Each day of Lent, practice a random act of compassion: Help someone to his or her car with groceries, give up lunch and give the money to a needy friend, clean up a mess that you did not make. Service turns us into the hands and heart of Jesus Christ. By turning from self and serving others, we are becoming Christs living, breathing presence. This is what St. Augustine meant when he preached, Become what you have eaten (The Eucharist).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today, in the streets of Rio and New Orleans and in the canals of Venice, Carnival reaches its height. We stand on the brink of Lenten discipline and order, of sacrifice and prayer, and like a diver for pearls, we take a deep breath of lifes abundance before immersing ourselves. Literally Good-bye to the Flesh, these once were days for clearing out the barnyard and having one last good roast before turning to fish, to eggs and cheese and porridges. In some places, masks and disguises are worn as a reminder that all falsehood must be stripped away in Lent and our true identity as the baptized must prosper. In others, the green, purple, and gold beads tossed in playful salute have their origins not only in the gifts of the magi, but also entwine the liturgical colors of Ordinary Time, Lent, and Easter. The message, sadly missed by many, is: embrace the Lenten journey, and find your life transformed. Dedicate the next few days to savoring lifes wonders, to the abundance of tables laden with great food and surrounded by the laughter of dear friends. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La cuaresma tiene sus races en la preparacin para el bautismo de adultos y en el arrepentimiento de pecadores pblicos. Ambas se concentran en la conversin y en especial en los tres pilares de la misma. La cuaresma nos da la oportunidad de encontrarnos de manera fuerte y vital con estos tres pilares: ayunar, ayudar y orar. stas son las prcticas cuaresmales que la iglesia ha ido proclamando y practicando desde tiempos antiguos. Son prcticas que los cristianos deberamos emplear todos los das de nuestra vida, pero con mayor fervor durante la cuaresma para poder celebrar dignamente las fiestas de la Pasin, Muerte y Resurreccin de nuestro Seor Jesucristo. La conversin es un proceso por el cual regresamos a participar de la vida divina que recibimos en el bautismo. Dios Padre mand a su Hijo para salvarnos. He all el por qu, el ayuno, el altruismo y la oracin es colaborar con Dios. Dios mismo colabora con nosotros derramando su Espritu en nuestros corazones. Con el poder del Espritu Santo podemos practicar el ayunar, ayudar y orar de manera vital.
