Persuasive Essay The Revolutionary War: Patriots & Americans or the British & Loyalists?

The Revolutionary War had many leaders and many warriors. But as with any war, there was also much bloodshed. It all started with the British. The British rule was in South Carolina, and not all of the colonists supported the British rule. So eventually political views changed and twisted, and the Patriots and the Loyalists appeared. The Patriots wanted to have freedom and Independence from Great Britain, but the Loyalists saw things differently. The Loyalists supported royal rule and Parliament. So the British and Americans went to war, along with the Patriots and the Loyalists. Great Britains goal was to capture all of South Carolina. Great Britain thought they could achieve this goal with the help of the Loyalists. There was a larger amount of Loyalist than Patriots living in South Carolina at the time, so it seemed that the British had the upper hand. The Patriots and Americans were strong leaders. They used guerilla warfare tactics to win eventually win the Revolutionary War, but guerilla warfare tactics are no where near as brutal as what Britishs most famous and memorable leader, Banister Tarleton. Banister Tarleton earned several famous nicknames such as The Butcher, Bloody Ban, & Bloody Tarleton. He earned these nicknames for good reason. Tarleton had a famous saying, Tarletons Quarter, which he used in battle. This saying was a chilling and dreaded response in the eyes of the Americans. Tarletons Quarter stood for take no prisoners, meaning any solider fighting for freedom and independence from Great Britain would be slaughtered. Tarleton went so far as to slaughter surrendered Patriots, which fumigated the Americans. But the Loyalists didnt seem to mind that Great Britain held such a commander in their army. So why would any solider, officer, or commander want to fight with a leader such as Tarleton? The Loyalists didnt seem to ask that question. Who could support such a cruel leader such as Tarleton? The Loyalists didnt seem to mind. But why wouldnt the Loyalists care? The Patriots wanted independence and freedom from Great Britain, so why were they slaughtered for wanting something so simple. The Loyalists just followed in Great Britains footsteps, causing more and more bloodshed. The Loyalists never

seemed to give an answer as to why they would betray the Americans, as to why they wouldnt fight for freedom and independence like they deserved. What were the Loyalists thinking, going against their own kind to follow the British who wouldnt even give them their freedom or independence?
