FIRSTWORD

The Real Super Sunday

Many watched the Super Bowl XLVI on TV last Sunday, maybe more for the creative ads than the game itself. A number of celebrities have been involved in promotion; however, kids and animals are usually the biggest hit. Last year, Volkswagen had a huge hit featuring a kid dressed as Darth Vader from Star Wars who thought the force helped him to start a car. This year, Volkswagen presented a dog who goes on a Jedi-like quest to be worthy to chase the new Beetle. Coke used computer-animated polar bears, with one weaving through tacklers to catch a bottle. At First Baptist Church Naples, we do not push a product but proclaim a Person the Lord Jesus Christ. This is not a game but about life and death decisions. God does not primarily use celebrities; instead, He will use those servants who share Jesus, who are controlled by the all-powerful Holy Spirit. While Super Bowl ads are extremely costly, our great expenditures are in effort, time, and dying to self. The Christian life is not a one-weekend experience but a lifestyle of witnessing. We offer a Super Sunday opportunity twice yearly at 5:00 p.m. for you to be a MVP (Most Valuable Proclaimer) during a semester of teaching, training, and visitation as we equip you to share Jesus. We begin this weekend with a whole new curriculum which I believe is more simple than the previous FAITH program. You will learn how to share the gospel with just one scripture verse, how to make a visit, how to build confidence in your conversation, and how to turn that dialogue into a life-changing event. Remember, unbelievers are not the enemy, but are rather casualties of war and victims of Satan. A bumper sticker reads: Friends dont let friends die without Jesus. Some even estimate that the United States is third among all nations with the most unsaved people, with only China and India having more. I cannot verify that, but I do know we have a tremendous mission field. We are not asking you to learn Roman numerals (i.e. XLVI), but the Roman road of salvation. This is also a super weekend since we welcome our newest minister on staff, Eric Yeldell, Associate Pastor of Contemporary Worship and Ministries. I know you will love him and Kristin, his wife, as well as their little ones (Mary Grace, Abby, and Naomi).

There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the Saturday night and Sunday morning 11:00 service. Come and meet Pastor Wicker.

Dr. W.A. Criswell, the beloved pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas, wrote about an event that occurred shortly after assuming his first pastorate. The town drunk died and Dr. Criswell was asked to perform the funeral service. Everyone in the town came to see what this new, young preacher would say about the town drunk. However, Dr. Criswell did not speak at length about the town drunk. Rather, he asked how many of them had shared Christ with the man. Had they reached out to him with the love of God? Do you know someone who needs to hear the gospel and be shown the love of God? Dont wait until their funeral, for then it will be too late! You must show them Gods love and share the gospel with them before it is too late! This Sunday evening, February 12 at 5:00 p.m., Dr. Wicker will begin an equipping class to teach us how to share the gospel with others. You are cordially welcome to join us. We will meet in Room DC121.
