From the generalized Hookess Law, derive the material constitutive matrix [C]. Assume E - Youngs Modulus and - Poission ratio. [16] 2. Explain the mathematical interpretation of nite element method for one dimensional eld problems. [16] 3. (a) Compare the characteristics of beam element with the truss element? (b) Derive the load vector for the specied uniform distributed load over the plane truss element? [16] 4. An axisymmetric ring element is shown in gure1. Derive the matrices, [B] and [D]. Take E = 2 X 105 N / mm2 and = 0.33. [16]

Figure 1: 5. One side of the brick wall of width 5 m, height 4 m and thickness 0.5 m is exposed to a temperature of - 250 C while the other surface is maintained at 320 C. If the thermal conductivity is 0.75 W/m K and the heat transfer coecient on the colder side is 50 W/m2 K. Determine (a) the temperature distribution in the wall and (b) heat loss from the wall. 6. Using the nite element principles, calculate the area of a circle of diameter d with lower bound approximation. [16] 2. With a suitable example, explain the physical interpretation of nite element method for one dimensional analysis. [16] 3. (a) Compare the characteristics of beam element with the truss element? (b) Derive the load vector for the specied uniform distributed load over the plane truss element? [16] 4. The coordinates of the nodes 1, 2 and 3 of a triangular element are (1, 1), (8, 4) and (2, 7) in mm. The displacements at the nodes are u1 = 1 mm, u2 = 3 mm, u3 = -2 mm, v1 = -4 mm , v2 = 2 mm and v3 = 5 mm. Obtain the strain-displacement relation matrix B and determine the strains x ,y and xy . [16] 5. Derive the conductivity matrix for 2-D triangular element, if one face is exposed to a heat transfer coecient h at ambient temperature of T. and also derive the load vector? [16] 6. Derive the elemental mass matrix for 1-D bar element and 1-D plane truss element? [16] 7. (a) Explain the convergence criteria in nite element analysis. (b) Write about pre-processor, processor, and post-processor in any FEM software. [8+8] 8. Explain the procedure for solving the following 3-D beam problem shown in Figure 1 using ANSYS software. [16]

(a) Explain briey a plane strain problem with suitable examples. (b) Derive the material constitutive matrix for a plane stress problem. [8+8]

2. With a suitable example explain the formulation of nite element equations by direct approach. Assume suitable data for the example. Use I-D analysis. [16] 3. Starting from the rst principles derive the stiness matrix for a 1- d bar element and extend it for the plane truss element? [16] 4. (a) Show that the value of the shape function N1 of node i and node k of a simplex triangular element is zero and at node I is one. (b) The (x, y) coordinates of the nodes i, j and k of a triangular element are (1, 1), (4, 2) and (3, 5) respectively. The shape functions of a point P located inside the element are given by N1 = 0.15 and N2 = 0.25. Determine the x and y coordinates of the point P. [6+10] 5. Consider a brick wall (0.7 W/m K) of thickness 30 cm. The inner surface is at 280 C and the outer surface is exposed to cold air with heat transfer coecient of 36 W/m2 K at -150C. Determine the steady state temperature distribution and heat ux through the wall. [16] 6. Consider axial vibrations of the steel stepped bar as shown in gure1: (a) develop global stiness matrix and mass matrix, (b) natural frequencies and (c) mode shapes. [16]
