The Lee B. Ledford Student Research Endowment supports research experiences for students enrolled at ACA member institutions. Students in a variety of disciplines have been supported in the past: e.g., English, sociology, history, biology, computer science, and religious studies. The Ledford Awards support many forms of research: laboratory and field work, interviews, analyzing special collections, etc. Research proposals with a strong service component are encouraged. Library research (particularly using the Bowen Central Library of Appalachia) as described by an annotated bibliography, must be included in the final report. The application must have the support of a faculty member who will agree to serve as a mentor throughout the research project. To see the expectations for faculty mentors, please refer to the Ledford Faculty Mentor Guidelines. The Ledford Endowment provides stipends for students only; no funding is available for faculty mentors. The eligible student must: Be a full-time student, returning to an ACA institution for at least one semester following the research term; Have graduated from high school or been home schooled in a designated Appalachian or contiguous county as defined by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). To see a listing of all Appalachian counties as designated by the ARC, go to www.arc.gov. Have a 2.0 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale. The eligible project: Will be endorsed by the faculty mentor and chief academic officer; Cannot have more than two Ledford supported students participating; Budget may include travel necessary to achieve the research goals if the faculty mentor accompanies the student. Ineligible projects include mission trips, class trips, or travel for students traveling alone. Ledford Scholar Responsibilities: Attend and present poster reporting research outcomes at ACA Student Summit, Friday, October 22,2010 Submit a final report including an annotated bibliography by November 12, 2010 A complete application includes A completed and signed application; A completed budget form; A project description explaining the research question, the learning goals and how those goals will be accomplished, and the roles of the faculty and student researchers (and on-site supervisor, if applicable). This description should not exceed five pages;

A biographical sketch including a statement of interest in the proposed research and anticipated outcomes. This section should not exceed five pages; A letter from the faculty mentor stating his or her willingness to mentor the student during the project.

Total Request to the ACA If this application is approved by the selection committee, an offer of support will be made, which you may accept or decline. If accepted, the award will be paid to the school for the students benefit in two payments: 90% at the beginning of the research term and 10% upon receipt of the students final report, weekly journal and attendance at the 2010 ACA Student Summit.
