Scientific Method- Part 1

Ruben wants to determine if listening to different types of music will have an effect on a persons pulse. His hypothesis states that if a person listens to rap music, their pulse will increase more than if they listen to other types of music. Ruben takes each participants pulse before, during, and after listening to 30 minutes of music. He has his mother listen to rock music, his sister listen to classical music, and his friend listen to rap music. From the data collected, he determined that rap music raises a persons pulse the most. 1. Identify the independent and dependent variables in Rubens hypothesis. 2. Despite the results, this experiment is not able to support Rubens hypothesis. Suggest specific improvements that will make the experiment test the given hypothesis. Explain why these changes are improvements. 1. The independent variable in Rubens hypothesis is the rap music or the type of music he will give the people to listen to, the dependant variable is the person pulse and how it will increase depending on the music. 2. Ruben only had one person listen to rap music and people react differently to things so he should have tested the same type of music on more people. Not only that but, Ruben gave the music to people within a wide range a age groups, he would have had better r3esults if they were all around the same age. Therefore, changing the people that are to be used for testing would improve the experiment by giving Ruben more accurate results.

Part 2
My little brother plays soccer, and he plays forward. He has 3 different pairs of cleats and before any game or practice he sits there for about 10 minutes debating as to which cleats he should use that day. One of the pairs are really light on his feet helping him move faster, another pair have grip on the side helping him control the ball better, and the third pair have good support in them so his feet dont get as tired when he plays. We together want to determine which pair of cleats are better for him to play in, which pair help him more during the games and/or practices. Our hypothesis is that the 1st pair of cleats will help him play better because they help him go faster and being a forward you have to be fast. I had him play 3 different games while using a different pair of cleats each game and recorded how well he played that game. The independent variable in this scenario are the 3 different pairs of cleats my brother has. The dependant variable is the way my brother plays in the different types of cleats. I observed that when playing with the first pair of cleats my brother did run faster but he didnt have very good control of the ball. In the second pair he did have very good

control, the ball gripped better with his cleats and his speed was right around the same speed as it was with the first pair, when using the third pair of cleats his speed wasnt was good and the ball control wasnt any good either. All in all, our hypothesis was incorrect. The first pair of cleats werent the best for him to play in, the second pair was actually a lot better. We decided that it would be better for him to play using the second pair of cleats so thats what hell be using. J
