SPORTING CHUVASHIA

   Development of mass sports and_propagation of a healthy way of life are 
one of problems of state policy of the Government of Chuvash Republic. 
Due to this for some years past, in the republic it was possible not only to 
keep, but also to increase considerably the number of citizens doing 
physical culture and sports. And for this purpose there is a good base ­ in 
Chuvashia there are almost 3,400 sporting facilities which are capable to 
accept about 80,000 people. There are eight stadiums, large track­and­field 
arena, and 636 sporting halls, 38 swimming pools, 207 shooting galleries, 
and 23 ski bases. There is a Centre of winter kinds of sports and Ice 
palace. 
   Public associations ­ sport federations, associations, and unions in 52 
kinds of sports, more than 100 sport and health­improving teenage clubs 
actively function in Chuvashia. Almost 3,000 children and teenagers go to 
61 children & youth sport schools in 37 kinds of sports. For six years under 
the instruction of the President the state grants are paid to young 
perspective sportsmen. 
   Such targeted activity gives good results. Chuvashia has trained 1,200 
masters of sports of the USSR and Russia, 110 masters of sports of the 
international class and 18 deserved masters of sports. 40 times the 
Chuvash sportsmen became champions and record­holders of the world, 
winners of Cups and Championships of Europe. 14 sportsmen participated 
in Olympic games. In total, they won live golden, two silver and two bronze 
medals in Olympic games. By the results of 2002, 87 sportsmen of 
Chuvashia are members of national teams of Russia in 11 kinds of sports. 
   In the republic there are the “White rocks”, “Queen”, “llyinskii”, 
“Kuvshinskii”, and “Rosinka” sport and health­improving camps. After 
revival of the Republican physical culture and sport society “Urozhai (Crop)” 
the activity on development of rural athletics­sport movement has livened 
up. It has become a tradition to hold republican summer rural sport games, 
championships of the “Urozhai” society in many kinds of sports, hundreds 
of agricultural workers participate in them. The Student’s sport union of 
Chuvashia was created to draw in more students and learning youth to 
athletics health­improving and sport events. Games are held among 
secondary vocational schools. 
   More than 500 mass sports events are held annually on the territory of 
Chuvashia. In 2002, 34 All­Russia and eight competitions of Privolzhskii 
federal district were held here and received a high estimation at the State 
sports committee of Russia. Cheboksary was honoured to become the 
capital of ‘the queen of sports”: championship of Russia on track and field 
events was held here for the first time, two finals_from three youth and 
juvenile championships of Russia took place here. And earlier also 
Championship of Russia in bow shooting, Championship of Russia in  judo, 
All­Russian competitions in mountain­bike, championship of Russia in free­
style wrestling among cadet girls, championship of Russia in table tennis 
were held. The reconstruction of the 

   “Olympic” stadium made it possible to host competition of International 
level in track and field events, that could be afforded earlier only by 
Moscow, St.Petersburg and Tula. 
   Holding competitions of high­ rank in our republic is also a merit of our 
sportsmen who honourably discharge their duties in the world arena. In 
2002, they repeatedly pleased our countrymen with their victories. At the 
European championship in race walking in Munich at once three race 
walkers of Chuvashia ascended the pedestal of honour. Then Olympiada 
Ivanova, Yelena Nikolayeva, Vladimir Andreyev had again success at the 
World Cup. Twice world champion Olga Yegorova, being a member of the 
Russian combined team, won the World Cup in track and field. At the 
European championship in sport gymnastics in Greece four gymnasts of 
Chuvashia became winners in command record. Natalya Golfs at the World 
Cup and at the European championship in free­style wrestling wan the 1st 
place and at the world championship she won bronze medal. 
   On May 17­19, 2003 in Cheboksary the 5th European Cup in race walking 
was  held. It was the first official tournament at the European athletic 
association in race walking being held In Russia. This sport events of great 
importance, as it  made it possible for Chuvashia to have good reputation in 
Europe and, as a result, in world sport arena. The organizing committee on 
preparation and holding of the European Cup is already aimed at 
participating in the competition for holding the World Cup in race walking in 
2008. Besides in Cheboksary the organization of the European 
championship in free­style wrestling among girls and the International 
tournament in dancing sport is planned. 
   2003 was a special year for sportsmen.  It iwas pre­Olympic. In 
accordance with the Decree of the President of Chuvashia training of 30 
leading sportsmen ­ candidates to the Olympic national team of Russia was 
conducted. There are all premises that in the capital of the 28th Olympic 
games in Athens representation of the sportsmen of Chuvashia was greater 
than  in Sydney, Atlanta, and Barcelona. Olympic games are the highest 
stage of development of sports of maximum achievements; Olympic medal 
is the dearest award for sportsmen. The government of Chuvashia sets 
itself the task to increase the number of Olympic sportsmen and prize­
winners of the Games. Already today young sportsmen are getting ready 
for Olympic games of 2008 in Peking.
