The Following BAR GRAPH represents the details regarding the number of persons who attended a film festival,

where four movies TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, CHAK DE INDIA, GURU, and THE NAMESAKE were screened. Each person who attended the festival watched at least one of the four movies.

Q.1 What is the minimum possible number of persons who attended the festival? (1) 300 (2) 370 (3) 350 (4) 410 (5) 380 Q.2 What is the maximum possible number of persons of age more than 60 yrs, who attended the festival? (1) 200 (2) 170 (3) 130 (4) 160 (5) 140 Q.3 The number of persons of age not more than 60 Yrs , who attended the festival is at least (1) 150 (2) 200 (3) 210 (4) 220 (5) 170 Q.4 The number of persons who watched all the four movies is at most

(1) 150 (2) 130 (3) 140 (4) 120 (5) 135 Q.5 The number of persons who watched exactly two of the four movies is at most (1) 280 (2) 290 (3) 300 (4) 340 (5) 385 The most important thing when u start a DI caselet is BASE CAMP BASE CAMP here means visualization of the whole problem and calculations based on those visualization: Here , In this caselet the first thing that should come to your mind is to calculate Add all the number of people who watched only ONE movie = 100 + 40 + 30 + 20 = 190 Add all the number of people who have watched one or more than one movie = (110+50+90) + (30+60+110) + (40+50+60) + (30+70+70) = 250 + 200 + 150 + 170 = 770 =N No. of people who have seen TZP as well as other movies = 250 100 = 150 No. of people who have seen Chak De as well as other movies = 200-40 = 160 No. of people who have seen Guru as well as other movies = 150 30 = 120 No. of people who have seen Namesake as well as other movies = 170 20 = 150

Now we have ARMS and AMMUNITIONS to annihilate the QUESTION. Before we start the war, An Advice from the Veteran General :D Whenever you have questions like these .. Where things have been shared by 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 people et al Always use the following equation .. it wrks 9 outta 10 times :D .. In this case we have 4 movies so well use

A+2B+3C+4D = N READ ON!!!!!!!!

Q.1 What is the minimum possible number of persons who attended the festival? Use the eqn A + 2B + 3C + 4D = N Where A= People who have seen only 1 movie B= People who have seen only 2 movies C=People who have seen only 3 movies D=People who have seen only 4 movies Therefore 190 + 2B + 3C + 4D = 770 2B+3C+4D = 580 Now since we have to find MINIMUM POSSIBLE PERSONS . Well have to maximize the 4D part. That is MAXIMISE number of people who have seen all the 4 movies. Go back to the BASE CAMP :D. There u see number of people who have seen guru is 120 . Now these 120 guyz can also see other 3 movies . So D = 120 2B+3C+4*120=580 2B+3C = 100 Again a THUMB RULE , when it gets down to cases like these , try to equalize the parameters For Eg: In this case B=C=20

Therefore your answer = 190 + 120 + 20 + 20 = 350

Q.2 What is the maximum possible number of persons of age more than 60 yrs, who attended the festival? For TZP lets assume that Out of 100 people who have seen only TZP = 50 of them are 60+ .. Ditto for CHAK DE so 60+ who have seen CHAK DE = 30 NOW THERE IS A CATCH , In case of Guru and Namesake . The number of people who have seen only one movie is LESS THAN number of 60+ . So here take it the other way round . Assume 30 of them have seen GURU and 20 of them have seen Namesake. Now 10 people from Namesake and 10 people from GURU remain. Since we have to maximize in this question . Lets assume that 10 people have seen Namesake and GURU. So Answer is = 50+30+30+20+10=140

Q.4 The number of persons who watched all the four movies is at most This we have already calculated in Q.1 = 120 Q.5 The number of persons who watched exactly two of the four movies is at most Get back to the same old formula A+2B+3C+4D=N A+2B+3C+4D=770 2B+3C+4D = 770-190 2B+3C+4D=580 Since we have to maximis the B part .. assume C=D=0 2B = 580 B = 290 As far as Q.3 goes this Question should have been left in the examination I will come up with the solution of Q.3 sometime later in the season.

All The Best, -Anant
