Yulia Bezriadina Lesson Plan Name: World War I Introduction: Getting to Know More About WWI and Its

Implications Class/Subject: 8th Grade United States History Date: February 21, 2012 Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: 1. Students will identify key information about specific groups of people in WWI by reading primary and secondary sources and generating a visual or written product incorporating these key ideas. 2. Students will summarize their findings to the class by collaborating with others who chose the same role to research the same group and presenting several key ideas to the class. Content Standards: 18.B.3a Analyze how individuals and groups interact with and within institutions (e.g., educational, military). 3.B.3a Produce documents that convey a clear understanding and interpretation of ideas and information and display focus, organization, elaboration and coherence. Materials/Resources/Technology: iPads Smartboard Role Handouts Teachers Goals: Teacher will facilitate students in effectively reading and comprehending primary and secondary sources on WWII and recognizing key information. To create a positive learning environment with the presence of mutual respect in which students can effectively collaborate together.

Start of Class Have students get focused and complete warm up on the board. Review answer with them. Warm Up: Define patriotism Introduction of Lesson Students will be told of the objectives for the day. Teacher will explain that in for students to get to know more about WWI, they will take on one of three roles (reporter, politician, soldier) and research their role using various resources. By the end of the lesson they will be expected to create a product and present what

they learned to the class. 10:05 AM Day 1 Lesson Instruction Students will be assigned in groups of 3. They will be able to chose who in their group gets which role. After they choose their roles, each group will receive an iPad to do their research with, and each student will receive a handout for their role. Their handouts will include two websites to use as a reference, as well as additional reference to a textual source. The handout will also contain directions for the product to be completed at the end of the lesson. Once students receive the handout, the teacher will go over the general information about the handouts and the tasks that students will complete. Students will be given time to research their roles and create their written and visual products. Teacher will walk around and facilitate students research as well as guide students in the creation of their projects, while simultaneously ensuring students stay on task. Students will be allowed to work with group members on researching main ideas of the war before beginning to create their products. 10:43 AM Day 2 Assessments/Checks for Understanding Once research and written/visual products are completed and turned in, students will get into groups with others who took on the same role. Each group will write a minimum of two main ideas they got from the project on the SmartBoard. When the groups are finished with this, the teacher will go over the main ideas as a whole with the class. The written main ideas that groups come up with, as we as individual project submissions will be used to assess student learning and check for understanding. Closure/Wrap-Up/Review Teacher will wrap-up the lesson by summarizing the main points students came up with and adding any key ideas students missed. Students will be instructed to jot down these key ideas to have in their notes. Self-Assessment Feedback from cooperating teacher and university supervisor as well as personal reflections on the effectiveness of the lesson will be used to improve on teaching practices.
