HowtoUsetheDocument TheStandardshavebeenconstructedasaseriesofwholeunits.EachStandardhasashort introductorysectionfollowedbyachecklistandalistofresources.Whenpertinent,tableshave beenincludedintheintroductiontoprovidelibrarieswithinformationthathasbeencompiled fromtheColoradoPublicLibraryAnnualReport,andwhenavailable,theNationalPublicLibrary Report.Asanaidinplanning,thechecklistprovidesameansbywhichlibrarystakeholderscan discussanddeterminehowtheirlibraryhasaddressedtheStandard.Insomecases,libraries willsurpasstherecommendation;inothers,librariesmayfindotherwaystoaddressthat recommendation;inothers,thelibrariesmaydecidethatrecommendationisnotrelevantor meaningfulintheircommunity.Lastly,therecommendedresourcesthatfollowthechecklist providethemeansbywhichlibrariescanmoveforwardwithaddressingtheitemsonthe checklist. ItisrecommendedthatLibraryDirectorsrevieweachoneoftheStandardsbybringingthem onebyonetotheirboardmeetingsthroughouttheyear.Staffandcommunitymembersshould beencouragedtoattendthediscussionabouttheStandards.Thisdocumentisintendedforuse bylibrarians,boards,staff,governingofficials,membersoffundingagencies,andcommunity supportgroupsinvolvedinplanningatthelocallevelandwithinthecontextofregionaland statelibraryservice.

    Thedocumentprovidesinformationtohelplibrariesplanandevaluatetheirservicesandmeet theneedsoftheirusersinthemosteffectivewaytheirresourceswillallow.Itisadynamic document,onewhichwillsparkdebateanddiscussion,evaluation,andrevision.TheStandards shouldserveasanimportanttoolinmeasuringalibraryssuccessinfulfillingitsstatedmission orrole. WhatthisdocumentisNOT TheStandardsrepresentasnapshotintime.Libraryplanningandoperationsareinherently fluid,respondingtowhatissometimesarapidlychangingsocial,fiscal,andtechnological environment.Asaconsequence,someStandardsrepresentedherewillsoonbeoutdated. SomeemergingStandardsmaynotberepresentedatall. Thisdocument,then,isintendedtoinformbutdoesnotreplacealibrary'sstrategicplan.While thestandardsattempttoidentifykeyissues,services,andbestpracticesinColoradopublic librarianshipatthismomentinhistory,theycannotprovideadetailedroadmaptoeach library'sfuture.
