2.1 Introduction of ford motor company

2.1.1 History of Ford Motor Company

Ford Motor Company is an American automaker and the world's fifth largest automaker based on worldwide vehicle sales. Based in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, the automaker was founded by Henry Ford, and incorporated on June 16, 1903. Henry Ford was 40 years old when he founded the Ford Motor Company, which would go on to become one of the largest and most profitable companies in the world, as well as being one of the few to survive the Great Depression. The largest family-controlled company in the world, the Ford Motor Company has been in continuous family control for over 100 years. Ford now encompasses several brands, including Lincoln and Mercury.

The founding of Ford Motor Company

Henry Ford's initial foray into automobile manufacturing was the Detroit Automobile Company, founded in 1899. The company floundered, and in 1901 was reorganized as the Henry Ford Company. Ford had a falling out with his financial backers, and in March 1902 left the company with the rights to his name and 900 dollars. The Henry Ford Company changed their name to Cadillac, brought in Henry M. Leland to manage the operation, and went on to be a successful manufacturer of automobiles.

Henry Ford himself turned to an acquaintance, coal dealer Alexander Y. Malcomson, to help finance another automobile company. Malcomson put up the money to start the partnership "Ford and Malcomson" and the pair designed a car and began ordering parts. However, by February 1903, Ford and Malcomson had gone through more money than expected, and the manufacturing firm of John and Horace Dodge, who had made parts for Ford and Malcomson, was demanding payment.[1] Malcomson, constrained by his coal business demands, turned to his uncle John S. Gray, the president of the German-American Savings Bank and a good friend. Malcomson proposed incorporating Ford and Malcomson to bring in new investors, and wanted Gray to join the company, thinking that Gray's name would attract others to invest. Gray was at first uninterested, but Malcomson promised he could withdraw his share at any time, so Gray reluctantly agreed. On the strength of Gray's name, Malcomson recruited other business acquaintances to invest, including local merchants Albert Strelow and Vernon Fry, lawyers John Anderson and Horace Rackham, Charles T. Bennett of the Daisy Air Rifle Company, and his own clerk James Couzens.[1] Malcomson also convinced the Dodges to accept stock in lieu of payment. On June 16, 1903, the Ford Motor Company was incorporated, with 12 investors owning a total of 1000 shares. Ford and Malcomson together retained 51% of the new company in exchange for their earlier investments. When the total stock ownership was tabulated, shares in the company were: Henry Ford (255 shares), Alexander Y. Malcomson (255 shares), John S. Gray (105 shares), John W. Anderson (50 shares), Horace Rackham (50 shares), Horace E. Dodge (50 shares), John F. Dodge (50 shares), Charles T. Bennett (50 shares), Vernon C. Fry (50 shares), Albert Strelow (50 shares), James Couzens (25 shares), and Charles J. Woodall (10 shares).[2] At the first stockholder meeting on June 18, Gray was elected president, Ford vice-president, and James Couzens secretary.[1] Despite Gray's misgivings, Ford

Motor Company was immediately profitable, with profits by October 1, 1903 of almost $37,000. A dividend of 10% was paid that October, an additional dividend of 20% at the beginning of 1904, and another 68% in June 1904. Two dividends of 100% each in June and July 1905 brought the total investor profits to nearly 300% in just over 2 years; 1905 total profits were almost $300,000.[1] However, there were internal frictions in the company that Gray was nominally in charge of. Most of the investors, both Malcomson and Gray included, had their own businesses to attend to; only Ford and Couzens worked full-time at the company. The issue came to a head when the principal stockholders, Ford and Malcomson, quarreled over the future direction of the company. Gray sided with Ford. By early 1906 Malcomson was effectively frozen out of the Ford Motor Company, and in May sold his shares to Henry Ford.[1] John S. Gray died unexpectedly in 1906, and his position as Ford's president was taken over by Ford himself soon afterward.[1]

Lincoln Motor Company

On February 4, 1922 Ford expanded its reach into the luxury auto market through its acquisition of the Lincoln Motor Company, named for Abraham Lincoln whom Henry Ford admired, but Henry M. Leland had named the company in 1917. The Mercury division was established in 1938 to serve the mid-price auto market.[16] Ford Motor Company built the largest museum of American History in 1928, The Henry Ford. Henry Ford would go on to acquire Abraham Lincoln's chair, which he was assassinated in, from the owners of the Ford Theatre. Abraham Lincoln's chair would be displayed along with John F. Kennedy's Lincoln limousine in the Henry

Ford Museum & Greenfield Village in Dearborn, known today as The Henry Ford. Kennedy's limousine was leased to the White House by Ford.

Ford and Russian automaker Sollers will export Russian-built cars to Europe. The Ford-Sollers partnership was formed in February and will start operations in early 2012. The venture will produce six models, including passenger and light commercial vehicles.

MOSCOW A new $2.7-billion joint venture between Ford Motor Company and Russian automaker Sollers, established in February, will export cars to Western Europe when it begins operation in early 2012, according to a spokesperson in the Russian government. The new venture will produce six models, including passenger and light commercial vehicles, and will also include stamping, engine assembly and R&D activities. Vadim Shvetsov, principal owner of Sollers, which owns a 60-percent stake in the new company, called Ford Sollers, said that vehicle exports from Russia would enable the venture "to integrate into the global automotive industry." The potential for European distribution was a critical factor for Sollers, which bypassed its original partner Fiat in favor of Ford. Ford currently operates an assembly plant in Vsevolozhsk, Russia (just outside St. Petersburg), and Sollers has facilities in Naberezhnye Chelny and Yelabuga. The partners also plan to build an engine plant in Tatarstan by 2014, with the capacity to produce about 200,000 engines a year, both for the Russian market and for export to Ford factories in Western Europe. Total cost of the project is estimated at $2.7 billion, of which $1.2 billion is expected to be provided by the Russian Bank for Development and Foreign Economic Affairs. Another $500 million is expected to be allocated by the partners, while the remaining $1 billion will be drawn from the future profits of the company. Inside Line says: Russian analysts believe that the establishment of the joint venture with Sollers will induce Ford to abandon its previously announced plan to build a second plant in Russia or to defer them to a later date. Ford Gains in 51 European Markets on Growth in Russia

Jan. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Ford Motor Co., fueled by growth in Russia and Turkey, increased 2011 sales in 51 European markets surmounting economic challenges, the automaker said today. Ford sold 1.58 million vehicles, up 2.4 percent, in 51 countries, including emerging markets such as Russia, Romania and Turkey. In the traditional 19 European markets, Fords 2011 sales fell 1.3 percent and its share declined to 8.3 percent from 8.4 percent in 2010, Ford said in a statement on its website. Economic headwinds amid the sovereign debt crisis pushed down industrywide auto sales by 0.2 percent to 15.3 million in the 19 traditional markets, Ford said. The automaker on Jan. 4 forecast auto sales in that region will fall to 14 million to 15 million this year. A marketing push in Germany helped to boost Fords share there to 7.4 percent in 2011 from 6.9 percent. We made solid inroads, particularly in growth markets such as Russia, Turkey and eastern Europe, and in Europes largest market, Germany, Roelant de Waard, Fords European marketing chief, said in a statement. This is a very good sign. Ford, based in Dearborn, Michigan, wants to replicate in Germany what the company achieved in the U.S. by using fuel economy and technology such as

voice-activated stereos to command higher prices from vehicle buyers. The companys vehicle sales in Germany for 2011 rose 18 percent, Ford said.

Ford Focus Sales in Russia Surpass 500,000 Just Ahead of Launch of All-New Model

This milestone shows how far we have come in Russia in the past 12 years, said Mark Ovenden, president and managing director, Ford of Russia. We are very proud the Focus is the most popular foreign branded vehicle ever with Russian customers. And now as we prepare to introduce the all-new Focus, we expect the Focus to reach new heights in Russia.

Ford sold just 47 Focus models in Russia in 1999, the year the vehicle was first sold in the market. Over time, the Focus has become very popular with Russian customers. Last year, Focus sales in Russia reached 67,040. "Its fitting that the 500,000th Ford Focus was sold right before the start of sales of the next-generation Ford Focus, which features a range of intelligent technologies previously found only in luxury cars, Ovenden said. The new Focus will once again redefine what Russian consumers can expect of a volume car." The Ford Focus has played a leading role in the global C-segment for more than a decade across the globe. It is the only car awarded Car of the Year in both the United States and Europe, and has claimed well over 100 major awards since then. Russian production of the Focus started in 2002 at the Vsevolozhsk Plant near St. Petersburg the first foreign-owned auto production facility in the country. The Ford Focus has set the standard for many Russians with regard to safety, quality and driving dynamics. The all-new Ford Focus, which goes on sale in Russia in June this year, is set to raise the benchmark yet again. It has just gone on sale in Europe and North-America, and is already showing strong customer demand. The US-car manufacturer Ford is planning to export cars to 48 countries from Tamil Nadu. The company which started its export of its Figo, in July, said that by the end of this year it will export 8,000 Figos to South Africa, the first export destination for the company from Chennai. Speaking to reporters at the concluding event of Ford Figo Discover Smart Drive campaign celebration Michael Boneham, president and managing director, Ford India said the company has started exporting Figo to South Africa in July and between April and October 2010 the company exported 4,100 cars to South Africa and by Decemberend the figure will touch 8,000". The company has been exporting 1.41 petrol and diesel variants of the Made-in-India Figo to South Africa. "Figo has been among the top five selling cars in South Africa now and we got an overwhelming response," said Boneham. Nigel Wark, executive director - marketing, sales and service, Ford India added that from October 30, the company has started exporting Figo to Nepal, which will be second the international market, which will be catered by Maraimallai Nagar facility, on the outskirts of Chennai. In addition to these two markets, the company is looking at 48 countries in 2011, said Boneham. These markets includes North Africa, Mexico, South America, Arab Emirates and West Asia. Ford's model Figo has crossed the 50,000 mark, registering a sale of 52,644 units since its launch in India. In October, Ford recorded its second highest domestic sales of 9,026 units, a 161 per cent year-on-year increase compared to the same month in 2009. From January to October 2010, the company has sold 72,078 units compared to 25,386 units in 2009, an increase of 183 per cent. Figo is the second fastest car model in India to cross the 50,000 sales mark. Now the challenge will be to stretch the manufacturing facility at Maraimallainagar and also the supplier capacity.
