MACHINE FOUNDATION
Introduction:
The design of a machine foundation is more complex than that of a foundation which supports
only static loads. Foundations for machines have to be specially designed taking into
consideration the impact and vibration characteristics of the load, and properties of the soil under
dynamic loading conditions.
Types of Machine foundations:
Machine foundations are generally classified as:
Block type foundations: (Opening < 50% of Block Volume)
Consisting of a pedestal of concrete on which the machine rest or Cellular foundations consisting
of hollow concrete block supporting the machine on the top slab. (Voids may be filled with sand,
or any other suitable filler material, if required) or Wall like foundations, which usually consist
of two walls parallel to each other, resting on individual or combined foundations, and
supporting the machine.
Operating speed generally less than 1000 RPM
Inhouse package DYNAM is available on PC which can be used to find the frequency and the
related amplitudes. The program performs dynamic analysis for compressor, blower or any other
reciprocating or centrifugal machine on block foundation.
Frame foundations (Table Top):
Consist of a base slab, and a super-structure of columns with frame beams and slab. The machine
is supported on the deck formed by the beams and slab.
Operating speed generally greater than 1000 RPM
F.E.M. package COSMOS may be used to find the frequency and related amplitudes. It also
calculates displacements and forces in various members at specified time intervals due to
dynamic force.
General requirements of Machine foundations
The following requirements should be satisfied from design point of view:
Block foundations:
a. The foundation should be able to carry superimposed loads without causing shear or
crushing failure & the settlements should be within the permissible limits. This is
achieved by limiting the soil stress below foundations under dead loads to 80% of the
allowable soil bearing capacity, or safe load on pile, for static loading.
b. The combined centre of gravity of the machine and foundation system shall, as far as
possible, pass through the centre of area of the foundation raft or centroid of the pile
group. Where unavoidable, eccentricity shall be less than 5% for block foundations, and
3% for frame foundations. However, in highly compressible soils, no eccentricity shall be
permitted.

2
c. No resonance should occur, hence the natural frequency of foundation-soil system
should be either too large or too small compared to the operating frequency of the
machine. For low speed machines, the natural frequency should be high, and vice-versa.
d. The amplitudes under service conditions should be within permissible limits. The
permissible limits are generally prescribed by the machine manufacturers.
e. All rotating and reciprocating parts of a machine should be so well balanced as to
minimize the unbalanced forces or moments. This is generally the responsibility of
mechanical engineers.
f. Where possible, the foundation should be planned in such a manner as to permit a
subsequent alteration of natural frequency by changing base area or mass of foundation
as may subsequently be found necessary.
g. Mass of the foundation block shall be greater than three times that of the machine. In
addition, centre-of-gravity of the machine and foundation shall preferably be located
below the top of the foundation block. Total width of the foundation raft shall be greater
than the distance from the centre-line of machine shaft to the bottom of foundation raft,
to ensure stability.
h. All faces of the foundation block shall be provided with surface reinforcement. Minimum
reinforcement diameter in horizontal and vertical directions shall be 12 mm, and
maximum spacing of bars shall not exceed 200mm.
Block foundations on piles:

Pile foundation are generally used where poor soil conditions exist, or when an increase
in the mass of the foundation block is either unduly wasteful or ineffective due to the
danger of resonance. The case where pile foundation is to be used is recommended by the
Geo-technical group.

Thickness of the pile cap shall not be less than 600mm or 2 times pile diameter
whichever is more.

Mass of the pile cap shall not be less than 2 to 3 times the mass of the machine in case of
centrifugal machines.

Frame foundations:
a. High speed rotary machines, namely, turbo generators, turbo-compressors etc. are
generally mounted on frame type foundations.
b. The geometric layout of top deck, and shape of the beam cross section arrangement. The
designer should carefully analyze equipment size and clearance requirements to ensure
that sufficient space is available for installation, maintenance, operation etc.
c. The location of beams and columns, and their reinforcement shall be arranged, as far as
possible, symmetrically with respect to the vertical plane passing through the longitudinal
axis of the machine.
d. The transverse frames (perpendicular to the axis of the machine) shall be located directly
under the bearings, wherever possible.

3
e. Adequate haunches shall be provided at all inter-sections of beams and columns to
avoid concentration of stresses and increase general rigidity of the frame.
f. The minimum beam depth shall be one-fifth of the span and the beam width is normally
equal to the width of the column, consistent with anchor bolt requirements, embedded
depth, and edge distances etc.
g. Weight of base raft of the frame foundation shall not be less than the combined weight of
the machine and foundation superstructure above the base raft, including columns, topdeck slab/beams etc.
From the practical point of view, the following requirements should be fulfilled:
a. The ground-water table should be as low as possible and ground water level deeper by at
least one-fourth of the width of foundation below the base plane. This limits the vibration
propagation, ground water being a good conductor of vibration waves.
b. Machine foundations should be separated from adjacent building components by means
of expansion joints.
c. Machine foundation should be taken to a level lower than the level of foundations of
adjoining buildings.
Input from Geotechnical group on soil parameters:
The inputs on soil parameters are recommended by the Geotechnical group. The following
parameters are required for the static and dynamic analysis of the machine foundation:
a) For Machine Foundations Resting on Soil

Recommended depth of foundation.

Permissible bearing capacity of soil in t/m
Coefficient of Elastic Uniform Compression of Soil (Cu) in t/m
Damping coefficient of soil foundation system.
Location depth of Ground Water Table.
2

b) For Machine foundations on Piles

Type, length, diameter and reinforcement detail of individual pile.

Load capacity of individual pile in compression, tension and shear under static
loading conditions.
Horizontal and vertical stiffness of individual pile under dynamic loads.
Damping coefficient of soil pile system.

The columns are assumed fixed at the base i.e. at top of base slab.
Columns and Beams are idealized as 3-D beam elements with six degrees of
freedom at each node.
Lumped mass approach is used for computing modal masses of foundation.
Sinusoidal forcing function of the form F(t) = Fo Sin wt is used for analysis.
