Entry Requirements:
It is highly recommended that you have a little background in Arabic prior to starting GCSE.

What type of background do you have?


1. Have you lived in an Arabic speaking country? 2. Do you speak Arabic at home? 3. Are you able to read the Quran? If you have answered yes to any of these then you are probably a good candidate for the GCSE Arabic.

How to prepare if you feel you are not ready yet


1. Learn the Alphabets, in the full/isolated form and the joined up form, as well as awareness of the Qamariya (Moon) and Shamsiya (Sun) letters. 2. Learn the vowels and how they work. 3. Practice your handwriting by copying Arabic texts. 4. Build a basic vocabulary of nouns, verbs and particles. 5. Familiarise yourself with the greetings, days of the week, months of the year, colours, numbers, names of animals, foods, countries, time, quantity and size. 6. Expose yourself to some basic grammar concepts like, Idhafa (Annexation of nouns), Sifat (Adjectives), the signs of feminine words, types of pronouns, the three types of verbs (conjugation of verbs is not required at pre GCSE level). 7. Try listening to and repeating Arabic material, not slang. You can try the Quran as well as course-books with a CD. 8. Get yourself a Yadbasics tutor and be self-motivated enough to do a little extra h/w.

The two GCSE Arabic themes:
1. Media, Travel & Culture. 2. Sport, Leisure & Work.

The Oral assessment:


The oral is split into two tasks. The first is either a picture based presentation which you talk about or a presentation based on a written topic which you talk about. The second is either a general conversation or another topic of your choice. Total time allowed 8-10 minutes. Each task is a maximum of 5 minutes and no less than 4 minutes.

Assessment:

What is the assessment based on?


You will be assessed on your ability to use the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

What can I do after?


People with language skills are highly sought after in the UK and abroad. You could try an AS Arabic level .
