2011 another banner year for Selah squad
By Jack H. Smith
Selah Sound
e Selah High School vol-
leyball team is known statewide
as a perennial power in the 2A
ranks. eir continuous hard
work and determination is pay-
ing dividends both on and o
the court.
Not only did the Kay Aberle
coached team end a memorable
2011 season with a 28-4 record
and a third-place nish at the
state tournament, they were also
named Washington State 2A
academic champs with a 3.34
GPA.
Going into the season that
concluded earlier this school
year, the Vikings had their eye
on a state title aer nishing the
2010 campaign with a second-
place nish at state and the core
of ve returning seniors Tori
Dexter, Cheyenne Merrit, Kylee
Fullerton, Kacey Hartman and
Marty Michael Graf.
Aer winning both the dis-
trict and regional tournaments,
Selah made it to the state semi-
nals before falling to Tumwater
(23-25, 22-25 and 21-25). Selah
ended the season with a win
over White River High School
(25-18, 21-2, 25-13, 25-16) to
nish in third place.
Viking junior Kailee Wood
said with only losing two se-
niors aer the 2010 campaign,
it seemed tting the teams goal
would be winning a state crown.
We fell a bit short, losing our
rst conference game of the sea-
son to a huge Turnwater team
in the seminals, Wood said.
We expected so much from
ourselves and not coming home
with a state trophy was prob-
ably one of the hardest things
we have had to go through. We
fought back from our loss and
still claimed third place, but I
dont think third place described
the amazing season we had.
Looking back on the cam-
paign, Wood said one of the
biggest highlights was in the
regional nals, where Selah
was able to upend the Pullman
Greyhounds, the team she said
stole the state championship
from them in 2010.
We came at them with all we
had, and quite honestly, pum-
meled them. e feeling was
amazing, she said.
With the loss of ve seniors
and looking at a young team
next season, Wood said they are
already working hard and con-
tinuing to practice in the osea-
son.
In the Selah volleyball pro-
gram, never expect less then
excellence, she said. e past
few years, as well as the years
before them, reect all the hard
work we put into the game. We
are successful because we spend
hour aer hour in the gym per-
fecting our game and pushing
each other to always play our
best. We are friends on and o
the court, and thats what makes
our program never expect less
then excellence.
Other members of the 2011
team included Cheyenne Fletch-
er, Kera Dexter, Erika Wilson,
and Taylor Wicht.
Also on the team were Keri-
sta Goodpaster, Courtney Hart-
man, Laura Steiner and Brianna
Reeves.

Selah Sound
Looking back at the 2011-
2012 season, Selah High School
girls basketball coach Rick
Hartman believes it is probably
the most fun hes had coaching.
Hes also very optimistic about
the future.
ey were awesome kids,
Hartman said.
Not only did Hartman laud
his team for their play on the
court, he also credited them for
having a 3.67 GPA and commu-
nity service projects.
Selah ended the season with a
7-13 (6-12 CWAC) record, but it
may not have been a true indica-
tor of just how far the program
has come. Hartman said the
team lost four games by three
points or less and eight by nine
or less. According to Hartman,
three of the losses were decided
on the last possession of the
game.
We were so close to hav-
ing a very good year, Hartman
said. All in all, we made a huge
amount of progress. Sometimes
it cant be measured in wins and
losses; it has to be measured in
other terms. e character of
this team was impeccable.
Selah also played the year
without junior Ashley Wilkey
who was lost for the season with
an injury. In total, Hartman said
the team lost a total of 30 total
games to injury.
Playing in what Hartman
called the toughest 2A league in
the state, highlights included a
57-49 win over defending state
champion Prosser in December
and a close loss to powerhouse
East Valley.
Aer not having a player aver-
age in double gures last season,
Selah was led by junior Kailee
Wood who nished second in
the CWAC with 17.5 points per
game.
Junior Sarah Bersing averaged
nine points a game, while se-
niors Tori Dexter and Cheyenne
Merritt both chipped in seven.
Hartman has already talked
with his team about putting
time in during the o season
to get better and is optimistic
about the next campaign.
He has hopes that with so
many close games this past sea-
son, the experience will carry
over to next year.
You have to play close ones
to learn how to win, Hartman
said.
I think next year we will win
those because weve been there
before.

Boys wrap up campaign
e Selah High School boys basketball team wrapped up their
2011-12 campaign earlier this month.
e Vikings ended the season seventh in the CWAC league with
a 5-13 conference record and were 6-14 overall.
Head coach Je Weeks said the team was selected eighth in pre-
season polls because of the lack of returning starters with signi-
cant varsity time, but aer a slow start they were able to knock o a
talented Ellensburg team 67-54.
He said the team was led by a balanced scoring attack in the post
with senior Cody Roberts and junior Drew Dyer. Both players were
named honorable mention all-league by the Yakima-Herald. Dyer
led the team with 10.2 points per game.
