Badung Officials Move t o I n c r e a s e Ta x Revenues from Restaurants Providing Live Music in Bali
The financial managers of the Badung regency - where most of the hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues are concentrated in Bali, are seeking to increase tax revenues earned from nightspots. According to Radar Bali, the Badung Tourism Office and Badung Financial Administration are creating new regulations for nightspots that will include higher tax liabilities for that line of business. Cok Raka Darmawan, the chief of the Badung Tourism Office (KaDisparda), said the new rules would be issued shortly via regulation issued by the regent. Those regulations will clarify what is meant by a nightclub and a disco thereby compelling many Bali businesses now operating as restaurants and bars to be reclassified as nightclubs and discotheques.

hopes these steps will stop the loss of revenues now being suffered by the regency by nightclubs and discos presenting themselves as restaurants. Plans are that during the coming review restaurants with their operating permits in order but found to be hosting live music will be offered the option of being reclassified as a disco or nightclub. Alternatively, the restaurants can opt to remove all music equipment and operate only as a restaurant. Restaurants are subject a 10% tax on sales while discos and nightclubs must pay a sales tax of 12.5%. Initially, the areas targeted for inspection are in Kuta, Legian and Seminyak, with other areas of the Badung regency to follow in the near future. According to current data provided by Darmawan, there are 284 restaurants and 351 bars registered in the Badung regency. The Badung tourism official expects the number of restaurants registered in Bali to decline as some restaurants become reclassified as nightclubs and discos. www.balidiscovery.com

Time to Face the Music

When in place, the new regulations will precipitate a review by both tourism and tax officials, requiring establishments offering live music to be reclassified into a higher tax bracket imposing 12.5% tax charges on all sales. These field check will be conducted during evening business hours and review facilities. If there is musical equipment for bands, then these places are nightclubs, explained Darmawan. Darmawan estimates the introduction on the new regulations and enforcement surveys will take approximately one month to complete. He ed by

Amateur video has emerged showing a man being wheeled out of the Heart Attack Grill on a stretcher after a medical episode that restaurant employees say looked like, well, a heart attack. Since opening in October the restaurant has become infamous for its gut busting menu and the scantily clad 'nurses' who serve the food. c h a n g e d fundamentally for millennia," he said. "There's been a blind spot in the science and technology community (of livestock production) as an easy target." Brown, who said he is funded by an American venture capital firm and has two start-ups in California, said he will devote the rest of his life to develop products that mimic meat but are made entirely from vegetable sources. He is working "to develop and commercialize a product that can compete head on with meat and dairy products based on taste and value for t h e mainstream consumer, for people who are hard-core meat and cheese lovers who can't imagine ever giving that up, but could be persuaded if they had a product with all taste and value." Brown said developing meat from animal cells in a laboratory will still have a high environmental cost, and so he said he will rely only on plant sources. Both scientists said no companies in the existing meat industry have expressed interest.

BALI THE RIGHT WAY

day again folks and lets rip for another run at the weekly. The footy last weekend didn't end as well as I first thought and if the way the Greater Western Sydney played is any indication on how they are planning to run this season, I'd say look out to the rest of the teams. I'm sure a heap of us got the desired craving fix and enjoyed watching the games with good friends. Being that it's that time of year again, I think we all should start looking at registering in our local footy tipping contests. I believe, as is usual, The Kuta Townhouse is running its Aaliasj@kutaweekly.com yearly contest with the addition of a new N.R.L tipping which is a first for the place. The powers that be have realized there are many people that frequent the many different places that telecast the N.R.L code and have agreed to get on board with a tipping comp for the same. One thing I will say is that the after party will be just as big, as is usual for the Town Houses and is well worth the nomination for the season. If I had to pick an N.R.L team it would have to be the Manly Sea Eagles, so let's see if they can hold the top spot in 2012. What a great time of year to be a resident of Bali. Get in to your local and get your name on the list for the 2012 season tipping. Shifting forward this week I did watch a funny episode unfold while kicking back at a haunt on the strip. As most of you know, or have seen the local council is, and has been renovating the main street of Kuta for some time and have gotten an excellent result in my book. There is one section of the road that has been completed for a while now, so I thought, I would take a position near there so as to not have to deal with the noise of construction etc etc, anyways there was a group of officials all looking at this particular section of road and measuring from one side to the other and deliberating on a game plan as by the looks of things they needed to get a service line under that section and after a while a few workers started scratching around and lifting road pavers exposing the substantial concrete footing underneath. Now these local worker guys had to smash it up and get their line in, then I'm guessing re-build the footing and re-lay the road, which is what they chipped away at. I watched these guys along with most of the other people in the place from time to time and saw they were slowly making progress demolishing this concrete and didn't seem to be too rushed or in a hurry to get it done as there was at least 100 metres of it that needed doing. They just plonked away, as they do, at the job basically. After a few hours of this, a group of Australian blokes that had been watching these blokes work, had thought it best that they showed the local boys how an Australian would get the job done and with this, one of them has put his beloved beer down, walked out to these guys, chest puffed out, rolled up his sleeves, taken another puff on his cigarette and proceeded to smash away with a pick axe at the heavy concrete footing. Sparks where flying, concrete was breaking with each swing and after about five minutes this idiot was out of breath and puffing like an old mally bull, and basically was now in need of a sit down under a shady tree to recover for a few days. He hands the pick back to one of the local workers and as best he can between gasping for breath and sweating like the proverbial, utters that's how we do it in Australia I don't exactly know what the local lads thought but I could see that they understood this f***witt wouldn't last for the duration of the contract, as working in a heavy humid environment requires a certain non rushed attitude. Anyways, our hero heads back to the bar and sits back down, and trembled through the rest of his beer before leaving with his mates. I have a feeling he would have laid down for a while to recover as soon as he returned to his hotel room. It was a very funny thing to witness. I went back to the same spot almost a week later and surprise surprise, the local crew had almost completed the project, pipe in place, concrete re-built and paving stones back in their place, all without breaking a sweat, and based on the monthly wage they get, id suggest a damn site cheaper than you could do it anywhere else in the world. When in Bali understand, these people work very hard for their coin and it's probably not best to try to show them how you think it should be done. Sit back, relax and enjoy your time here. Don't sweat the small stuff. Ok readers, that's it for me and issue 273, I hope the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and always remember, The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom. Enjoy your week, ALIASJ.

First test-tube hamburger ready

The world's first "testtube" meat, a hamburger made from a cow's stem cells, will be produced this fall, Dutch scientist Mark Post told a major science conference.
Post's aim is to invent an efficient way to produce skeletal muscle tissue in a laboratory that exactly mimics meat, and eventually replace the entire meat-animal industry. The ingredients for his first burger are "still in a laboratory phase," he said, but by fall "we h a v e committed ourselves to m a k e a couple of thousand of small tissues, and then assemble them into a hamburger." Post, chair of physiology at Maastricht University in t h e Netherlands, said his project is funded with 250,000 euros from an anonymous private investor motivated by "care for the environment, food for the world, and interest in life-transforming technologies." Post spoke at a symposium titled "The Next Agricultural Revolution" at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Vancouver. Speakers said they aim to develop such "meat" products for mass consumption to reduce the environmental and health costs of conventional food production. Conventional meat and dairy production requires more land, water, plants and disposal of waste products than almost all other human foods, they said. The global demand for meat is expected to rise by 60 percent by 2050, said American scientist Nicholas Genovese, who organized the symposium. "But the majority of earth's pasture lands are already in use," he said, so conventional livestock producers can only meet the booming demand by further

expansion into nature. The result would be lost biodiversity, more greenhouse and other gases, and an increase in disease, he said. In 2010 a report by the United Nations Environment Program called for a global vegetarian diet. "Animal farming is by far the biggest ongoing global catastrophe," Patrick Brown of the Stanford University School of Medicine said. "More to the point, it's incredibly ready to topple ... it's

Marchand said his biggest challenge was getting used to riding on a track, something he last did in 1937.

A Florida man trying to kick the smoking habit was puffing on an electronic cigarette when a faulty battery caused it to explode in his mouth, taking out some of his front teeth and a chunk of his tongue and severely burning his face, fire officials say.

the name of 57-year-old Tom Holloway of Niceville was filled with well-wishers commenting on the injury. Holloway was in his office at home when the device exploded, leaving behind burnt chair cushions, pictures, carpet and office equipment. Thomas Kiklas, cofounder of the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association, said the industry knows of no problems with the cigarettes or batteries exploding. Kicklas said the rigid, plastic cigarettes include a small battery and cartridge. The battery is designed to generate an electric charge when the device is inhaled. The charge sets off vapour in the cigarette tube. The nicotine-filled mist gives the taste and experience of smoking without the smoke.

Canada agreed to allow a member of the Flying Wallenda family of daredevils to attempt a tightrope walk over Niagara Falls, clearing the way for the stunt some time during the summer.
Nik Wallenda, 33, secured support on the American side of the falls last September when New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill giving him one year to perform the feat, which Wallenda says will be the first attempt in more than a century. The board of Canada's Niagara Parks Commission voted unanimously to allow Wallenda to go ahead, reversing its earlier decision. "I'll be walking through the mist thrown off by the falls," he said, adding that although that may sound as though it would cause slippery conditions, his suede wire-walking shoes actually grip better when wet. He plans to rig a 2-inchdiameter wire rope between cranes on either side of the falls, some 1,800 feet apart, he said. The date has not been set, but is expected to be in the summer. He will continue to train on a full-scale high-wire rig on an airport runway in Pittsburgh, with simulated mist. "I've done walks farther and higher," he said. "This will be the most iconic."

A seven-bedroom house in London's upmarket Mayfair district will likely set a British record rent of 433,000 pounds per month as landlords cash in on demand for space during this summer's Olympic Games. Mattel to issue William and Kate dolls for royal anniversary

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are really getting dolled up for the first anniversary of their royal wedding. Mattel Inc, the U.S. maker of Barbie dolls, said this week it will release a special two-doll set in April to mark the one-year anniversary of Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding at Westminster Abbey. The figures, part of Mattel's Barbie Collector series, will come dressed up in outfits duplicating those the couple wore in a ceremony that was viewed by an estimated 3 billion people worldwide. For William, that means a pint-sized version of his red Irish Guards outfit with a bright blue sash. For Kate, that means a miniature of the traditional white dress and veil she wore, as well as a teeny-tiny tiara just like the diamond-studded original she borrowed from Queen Elizabeth. The price for the two-doll set is $100 and Mattel is taking pre-orders at www.barbiecollector.com. The royal couple joins others in Mattel's Barbie Collector, including country singers Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, as well as TV stars Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

HOROSCOPE PREDICTION 23 Feb - 29 Feb 2012

Aries Mar 20 - Apr 19 Recently you lost ground in certain important situations. Tempting as it is to try to recover your position, it simply isn't worth it. Things have changed, more than you know. Consequently, while the foundation may seem the same, it's not. If you still refuse to give up, at least ensure any arrangements are flexible. Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 While you understand the excitement of one particular individual about certain ideas and their desire to turn those ideas into lasting plans, you can't help but think they're being hasty. At other times that might be true. But now the pace demands fast action. Wait for even a day and the moment could be lost. Gemini May 21 - Jun 20 There's a difference between exciting ideas, which you have lots of, and every day, and inspiration. Last week's encounter between your ruler Mercury and Neptune began a cycle that will lead to a fresh perspective on many areas of your life. But especially in existing arrangements and those soon to come your way. Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22 The odds are good that even if you're not already aware of the New Moon, your instincts are telling you to slow down. This gives you a chance to reflect both on what should go and, equally, to consider the future and what's next. This period's just about reflection. Action comes later. Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22 Fortunately you're strong enough to stand up to those who disagree with your decisions. This will come in handy now, with your ruler the Sun meeting the intuitive Neptune. While what you sense may be completely at odds with the facts, should others challenge you, it won't upset you in the least. Virgo Aug 23 - Sep 22 Even for you, as a quick-minded Virgo, certain situations are becoming more puzzling by the day. This has nothing to do with your capacity for analysis and everything to do with the extent of developments. Promising as these are, if you're to understand them, you'll need to trust your instincts over your intellect. Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22 Infuriating as the underhand approach of one particular individual has been to pressing situations, in the long run you may thank them. Had discussions been more aboveboard, there wouldn't just have been conflicts, issues would have led to serious misunderstandings. Now these can be dealt with slowly and more discreetly. Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21 Nobody would blame you for feeling you've been taken advantage of. Certainly recent events benefited others while they cost you in some manner, personally, financially or even in terms of time or your reputation. Still, begin asking questions. What you learn could put the situation in an entirely different, and far more positive, Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 Few things frustrate you more than situations in which you've managed to get everything organised, then encounter last minute obstacles. Except now what appear to be obstacles are actually giving you an opportunity to rethink those plans. With so much changing so rapidly, you'll need to revise even the simplest of arrangements frequently. Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 The current New Moon isn't just about a time of stillness and reflection, as is always the case. It's about reviewing certain of your priorities. While your circumstances have been considerably altered, you're basing plans on the past. Once you realise how very different things are, you'll begin making the necessary changes. Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18 Often obstacles are no more than that, hurdles that must be surmounted. However, those you're currently facing have more to do with changes in the actual circumstances you're dealing with. The first step, therefore, is to invest time in examining what's taking place and the impact of those developments on existing arrangements. Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 19 Ignoring pressure isn't easy. But whether you're facing pressure from others or that you're putting on yourself, the current Pisces New Moon is about reflection, not action. Recent powerful planetary activity in your sign is triggering far-reaching changes. Urgent as those around you seem, those within are of far greater significance.

Bali Politician and Community Leader Bemoans the I n c r e a s i n g Marginalization of the Balinese in their Homeland

ALL ABOUT BALI

Bali Temples
Many claim that there are actually more temples than
homes in Bali. Strictly speaking, many temples are really shrines but the number of religious compounds in Bali is said to be over 10,000. Normally peaceful and uninhabited, Bali's temples transform into scenes of great activity and are ornately decorated during festivals with traditional dance performances, cockfighting and gambling. You'll find that each of Bali's temples is facing towards the mountains, the sea or sunrise. spirits and intruders. The best time to see Tanah Lot is in the late afternoon when the temple is in silhouette.

Built around a sacred spring, Tampak Siring. An inscription dates the spring all the way back to 926AD; and there are fine carvings and Garudas on the courtyard buildings. The temple and its two bathing spots have been used by the Balinese for over a thousand years for good health and prosperity; as the spring water really does have the power to cure! Regular purification ceremonies also take place here. Tampak Siring artists produce marvellous bone and ivory carvings. Both sites open daily. By public transport from Ubud, catch a bemo north to Tampaksiring from the junction in Bedulu, which is south-east of Ubud. A little off the main road in Tampaksiring is Gunung Kawi with its group of large stone memorials cut into cliffs on either side of a picturesque river valley. Besakih Temple
(Mother Temple) Over a thousand years old, Besakih Temple is known as the "Mother Temple of Bali" Perched on the slopes of Mount Agung, at a lofty 1,000 meters (3,000 feet) Besakih is the biggest and holiest of all the Balinese temples. Named after the Dragon God believed to inhabit the mountain, it's said to be the only temple where a Hindu of any caste can worship. Eighteen separate sanctuaries belonging to different regencies and caste groups surround the three main temples dedicated to Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu. To the Balinese, visiting the temple sanctuaries is a special pilgrimage. The mountain top setting gives it an almost mystical quality. Steps ascend through split gates to the main courtyard where the Trinity shrines, dedicated to Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu, are wrapped in cloth and decorated with flower offerings. There are are number of temples but many of their inner courtyards are closed to visitors. If travelling on your own, try reach Pura Besakih before 9am, when many tourist buses start to arrive, so that you can take in the lovely temple in the quiet Balinese morning.

Ulu Danu
No less stunning is the mountain resort of Bratan, in Bedugul, and the magnificent Ulun Danu, an inspiring place of worship that appears to rise out of waters of Lake Bratan.

The world's hottest chilli pepper has a sting

There are super-hot chilli varieties. And then there's the sweat-inducing, teargenerating, mouth-on-fire Trinidad Moruga Scorpions.
With a name like that, it's not surprising that months of research by the experts at New Mexico's State University's Chile Pepper Institute have identified the variety as the new hottest pepper on the planet. The golfball-sized pepper scored the highest among a handful of chilli breeds reputed to be among the hottest in the world. Its mean heat topped more than 1.2 million units on the Scoville heat scale, while fruits from some individual plants reached two million heat units. "You take a bite. It doesn't seem so bad, and then it builds and it builds and it builds. So it is quite nasty," Paul Bosland, a renowned pepper expert and director of the chilli institute, said of the pepper's heat. Researchers were pushed by hot sauce makers, seed producers and others in the spicy foods industry to establish the average heat levels for superhot varieties in an effort to quash unscientific claims of which peppers are actually the hottest. That's something that hadn't been done before, Bosland said. "The question was, could the Chile Pepper Institute establish the benchmark for chilli heat? Chilli heat is a complex thing, and the industry doesn't like to base it on just a single fruit that's a record holder. It's too variable," he said. The academic institute is based at the university's agriculture school and is partially funded by federal grants, as well as some industry groups depending on the project. The team planted about 125 plants of each variety - the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, the Trinidad Scorpion, the 7-pot, the Chocolate 7pot and the Bhut Jolokia, which was a previous record-holder identified by the institute and certified by Guinness World Records in 2007. Randomly selected mature fruits from several plants within each variety were harvested, dried and ground to powder. The compounds that produce heat sensation - the capsaicinoids - were then extracted and examined. During harvesting, senior research specialist Danise Coon said she and the two students who were picking the peppers went through about four pairs of latex gloves. record holders, there will be a run on seeds and plants," said Jim Duffy, a grower in San Diego who supplied the university with seeds for four of the super-hot varieties. Not even Duffy or the researchers would dare to pop a whole Trinidad Moruga Scorpion in their mouths, but there are plenty of videos on social networking sites where heatloving daredevils have tried. The blood flow increases and the endorphins start flowing. Their faces turn red, the sweat starts rolling, their eyes and noses water and there's a fiery sensation that spreads across their tongues and down their throats. "People actually get a crack-like rush," Duffy said. "I know the people who will eat the hottest stuff to get this rush, but they've got to go through the pain." Pepper experts said there are a handful of people who are crazy enough to subject themselves to the pain, but the rest just want to try out these super-hot peppers on their friends or make killer hot sauce - and it doesn't take a whole pepper to do that. More bang for the buck is how Bosland describes it. He said a family could buy two of the super-hot peppers to flavour their meals for an entire week. The beauty of the peppers is they're not only the hottest in the world, but they're also some of the most flavourful peppers, Duffy said. " Yo u c a n m a k e a barbecue sauce or a hot sauce at a mild to medium level using small amounts of these peppers and it will be so darn addictive that you won't want to put your spoon down," he said. "You'll want to eat and eat and eat."

One in 8 U.S. voter registrations are faulty

More than 1.8 million dead people are listed as active U.S. voters and about 2.75 million people have active registration in more than one state, the Pew Center on the States reported
The result of this outdated and inefficient registration system is that one in eight U.S. voter registrations is invalid or markedly inaccurate, according to the research by the non-partisan think tank. U.S. electoral systems "are plagued with errors and inefficiencies that waste taxpayer dollars, undermine voter confidence, and fuel partisan disputes over the integrity of our elections," the report said. South Carolina's ID law i n D e c e m b e r, a r g u i n g i t discriminated against minority voters. The Pew report did not identify voter fraud as a problem, saying the inefficiencies could lead to "the perception that they (elections) lack integrity or could be susceptible to fraud." MOVING ON One reason for voter registration trouble is that Americans frequently change voting districts, the report said. About one in eight Americans moved during the 2008 and 2010 election years. Up to 25 percent of young Americans move each year, it said. A study Pew conducted with Oregon showed taxpayers spent $4.11 per active voter in 2008 t o p r o c e s s registrations and keep up a voter list, or $7.67 per transaction, such as new or updated registration. C a n a d a spends less than 35 cents to process registrations and 93 percent of its population is registered. Canada uses modern technology for registration and data-matching methods common in the private sector, the report said. The Pew study was carried out by RTI International, a nonpartisan North Carolina research institute. RTI used a database maintained by Catalist LLC, a Washington processor of voter information.

The AFL will scrap its
priority draft pick system and replace it with a newer version which makes it much harder for clubs to gain extra selections.
The overhaul is partly aimed at removing suspicions that clubs tank for extra picks. Under the outgoing system, a club which earned 16 premiership points (four wins) or fewer in a season was given an extra pick before the second round of the national draft. If a club earned 16 points or fewer in consecutive years they were awarded an extra selection before the draft's first round. Under the new system, which will come into effect this year, a more complicated formula will be used, which takes into account premiership points,

Anderson says while the league did not believe tanking had occurred, they want to remove any doubt among fans. "There's no doubt there is an unhealthy obsession in some quarters with the whole idea that there could be tanking," he said. "Part of the rationale is to deal with that, but only part of the rationale." Anderson says the league also wants to move closer to having an uncompromised national draft. He says the AFL has already taken steps in that direction in recent years, such as by changing the father-son system, so that clubs which want to draft the sons of former players now had to be part of a draft bidding system.

Nearly two-thirds of married couples and people with a significant other say their partner is the most important source of happiness in their lives, according to a new global poll released on Valentine's Day.
And nearly half of all singles yearn above all else to find a sweetheart, with about 45 percent saying finding a partner would bring them the greatest happiness. "What strikes us when we look at the data is that you have this majority of global citizens who are really looking at home for happiness," said Keren Gottfried, research manager at Ipsos Global Public Affairs, which conducted the survey in 24 countries. South Africa reported the highest levels of domestic bliss, with 82 percent of settled South Africans saying nothing could make them happier than their partner. Japanese and South Korean couples were at the other end of the scale. Nearly half said they would hesitate to say their partner was the single best thing in

Nearly 70 percent said nothing could make them happier, followed by 57 percent of Turks and 56 percent of Mexicans. But even among couples who lived together, the poll found signs of restlessness with slightly more than a quarter of people in such relationships saying that finding someone else to be with would make them happiest of all. Ipsos interviewed 21,248 in an online survey in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, G e r m a n y, G r e a t B r i t a i n , Hungary, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the United States. The new formula will make it more unlikely a club will be granted a priority pick after just one poor season, or that a pick will be given before the first round of a draft. AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson says the rule changes are partly aimed at eradicating any suspicion that clubs sometimes tanked late in seasons for extra draft picks.

Cognac of Napoleon's army for sale with collection

A Dutch antique trader is selling his collection of over 5,000 unopened bottles of Cognac and other liquors, which he claims is the biggest of its kind.
The most precious bottle in Bay van der Bunt's collection, which is valued at 6 million euros (4.9 million pounds), dates back to 1795 and was a Cognac taken by Napoleon's army on campaign for the officers. Van der Bunt estimates that bottle is worth between 100,000 and 150,000 publicity for the sale. Van der Bunt wants to sell his collection to someone with a passion for liquor, but also wants a buyer who is prepared to keep the bottles unopened rather than savouring their contents. "In this respect we certainly are afraid that a potential buyer would empty some of them," Laming said. "We will screen potential buyers to minimise that risk".

Reserve boss to face the music

IMF forecasting that highlights just how large Treasury boss Martin the difference is between Australia growth to accelerate over the Parkinson is pretty sure in two which country he resides. and Greece.a comparison of how coming By years. the value of 2013, It is But the man who also sits on the Reserve Bank board last week told a Senate estimates committee reckons there's a few Australians who reckon their home address is somewhere in the suburbs of Athens. "I do think the whole mind set is overdone. It's almost as if most Australians think we live in Greece," he said. "We don't. We actually have an incredibly bright future ahead of us." It's that bright future - led by the mining sector contributed towards the Reserve Bank's decision to leave interest rates on hold at its most recent meeting. At 4.25 percent the official cash rate is still low by historical standards. It was at 4.25 percent that John Howard famously declared to have interest rates at "record lows".] Over in Greece official rates are at one percent. But no one is borrowing money, locals are sending their cash overseas for fear of the country being pulled out of the euro and unemployment is around the 21 percent mark. Unemployment in this country is now at 5.1 percent, wages are growing faster than inflation, pensions continue to rise and it's unlikely your business will be firebombed by an angry mob. For those still not convinced have a look at the accompanying graph which Greece and Australia did through the two biggest economic dislocations of the past century the Great Depression (1929 to 1934) and the Great Recession (which started in 2008). Through the Great Depression the Australian economy went into freefall. Unemployment up to 33 percent. Australia's economy was 16 percentage points smaller in economic output in this country will be about a fifth larger than it was back in 2008. Now let's head to Greece. The Greek economy has shrunk by more than eight percentage points since 2008, will be smaller again next year and the IMF does not forecast out far enough to find a year in which it will return to its 2008 level. For the debt fetishists out there, note that Greece's net government debt is 153 percent of GDP while in Australia it hit almost eight percent last year. That is the price being paid by Greeks and the Greece by austerity, poor policy decisions of the past, bad policy decisions of today and lenders who are not prepared to accept losses for their own mistakes. It's not just Greece which did better through the Great Depression than through the Great Recession. Nobel laureate and New York Times' columnist Paul Krugman has highlighted how Britain did better in the 1930s than it has through the 2000s. There are now the best part of 2.7 million Britons unemployed, with a third of those without a job through the past year. As Dr Parkinson told Australians, cheer up! "Yes we have a multispeed economy at the moment and there are some parts that face significant challenges but Australians have a lot to be optimistic about," he said.

1931 than it was in 1929. It took six years for the economy to return to the size it was when the global economy collapsed. Over in Greece it too was hit hard by the Great Depression. However, it did much better than Australia. Economic output had returned to 1929 levels by 1932. By 1934, when Australia was just making it back to where it was in 1929, the Greek economy was 10 percentage points larger than it was six years earlier. Move forward to the current day. The Australian economy today is 10 percentage points larger than it was in 2008, with the

Crocker has also been impressed with the attitude and form of rookie half-back Adam Reynolds, who appears to have won the race to wear the number seven shirt against Sydney Roosters in round one. "He was excellent at the weekend against the Dragons," Crocker said. "He's a good talker and the more he plays, the more he's going to build up his combination with Sutts (five-eighth John Sutton) and that will be better for us. "I really like his attitude. He works really hard in training, his defence is good. He is a proper angry little half-back.

Former Test stars Matthew Hayden and Darren Lehmann have both expressed their disappointment at the end of Ricky Ponting's glittering one-day international career.
Ponting said he does not expect to add to his 375 one-day games for Australia after being dropped from the national squad on Monday. The former captain sa id he accep te d th e selectors' decision, which came after he made five single-figure scores in a row in the tri-series against India and Sri Lanka. But the decision incensed Hayden, a World Cup winner under Ponting in 2003 and 2007, and Lehmann, who played with Ponting in the 1999 and 2003 triumphs. Hayden said on Twitter: "Ricky Pontings Omission from the National 1 Day side is an outrage!" .

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said despite the inglorious end to Ponting's ODI career, he would be remembered as possibly the best limited overs player the nation has had. " F i v e Wo r l d Cups, four finals, three championships and two as captain, plus all the runs and special feats in the field. Crocker buoyed by Burgess' potential

South Sydney's Michael Crocker is confident fellow co-captain Sam Burgess can become one of t h e b e s t forwards to ever grace the NRL following the Englishman's swashbuckling return against St George Illawarra on Saturday.
Burgess, who has been sidelined since round seven of last season with a serious ankle injury, was at his rampaging best against the Dragons, scoring two tries in the Rabbitohs' 18-12 defeat in the Charity Shield at the Olympic stadium. Crocker, who has played alongside the likes of Petero Civoniceva, Steve Price, Sam Thaiday and Adrian Morley during his time with Queensland, Australia and Sydney Roosters, believes the 23-year-old can reach similar heights to those champions of the game. "I think Sam can be good as any of them," Crocker said. "He needs to be smart

Burgess has struggled with injuries throughout his career having to go under the knife to cure shoulder and ankle issues. White cards tipped to reduce foul play

Super Rugby referees b e l i e v e t h e introduction of a white card this season will take pressure off them and help the game's authorities remove foul play.
The white card will allow referees to refer to a citing commissioner alleged incidents like biting and gouging that on field officials might not have seen. "I think it will assist us in removing incidents from the game that the IRB and SANZAR are trying to remove and clean up the game in terms of foul play," referee Andrew Lees said. Smith, did not think the white card would lead to a reduction in yellow cards that result in a 10minute 'sin bin' for the offender. "But it gives us another resource that we can use for an item that may not meet a red card threshold," Smith said. Waratahs coach Michael Foley supported the introduction of the white card. "I think anything that helps tidy up that judicial process, makes it slicker, is a good thing," he said. "I see only positives in it.
