PART 7 of a MAYNE One-name Study

MAYNE families of YORKSHIRE (1350-1722): Beverley, Rolston, Hessle (Hull) in Holderness INTRODUCTION
The material here is the early history (in descendant pedigree format) of two Mayne families of Yorkshire who look as if they have a common link although we failed to find it. They are included as a short tail or stub because there is heraldic evidence suggesting that these Yorkshire families are the ancestors of the Maynes of Buckinghamshire and Warwickshire whose details are at http://www.scribd.com/doc/82433306

Mayne of Beverley & Rolston in Holderness Mayne of Hessle (Hull) in Holderness

It is organised for each family into three main parts as follows:-

From page: 3 From page: 8

Descendant Pedigree with illustrated notes on each individual of the family. Index of individuals in the pedigree. Sources. List of the main research sources used (before web sources were available).
These pedigrees have been researched and compiled as part of a one-name study of the MAYNE surname which was published by David Gore on CD in 2007 [ISBN: 9780953091218]. The following provided material or in other ways supported the study: John Mayne, Rosemary Farrell-Hutchings in England, Stella Little, Martha OGrady and Brian MacDonald in Ireland, Jillian Fisher, Dell Mayne and Robert Harden Scott in Australia, and Brian Mayne in Japan. For study details see http://www.one-name.org/profiles/mayne.html ------------------------------------------

MAYNE of BEVERLEY & ROLSTON, YORKSHIRE (1458-1722)

MAYNE of BEVERLEY & ROLSTON in Holderness, Yorkshire. Beverley is an ancient town in the East Riding of Yorkshire which was established on the site of an 8 th century monastery. The famous Beverley Minster took 200 years to build being completed in 1425. It is one of the finest examples of perpendicular design in a church, and was the inspiration for Westminster Abbey. Rolston (now a hamlet) was a Domesday village, then named Roolfestone, on the North Sea coast just south of Hornsea, and 12 miles east of Beverley. Beverley, Rolston (and Hessle and Hull) all lie in the ancient territory that was known as Holderness. It is the marshland area of East Riding to the south and east of the Yorkshire Wolds with its other borders being the Humber Estuary and the North Sea south of Bridlington. The Holderness marshes were drained in the Middle Ages and are good agricultural land.

(1) 1 Thomas Mayne of Beverley, Yorkshire ---------------------------------------Death: ca 1458, Beverley, Yorks (Will proved 27 7 1458) Burial: St John's, Beverley: "before the image of our lady" Children: William

(2) 1.1 William Mayne of Beverley, Yorkshire ---------------------------------------Children: Thomas (-1525)

(3) 1.1.1 Thomas Mayne of Rolleston (Rolston) ---------------------------------------Death: 1525 Children: Christopher

It is probable that these Maynes of ROLSTON are of the same family as MAYNE of HESSLE (Page 8) both in Holderness, whose pedigree ends on page 9 with the brothers, Roger and William Mayne, in the same generation as this one which begins with Thomas Mayne of Beverley, buried there about 1458 (above on this page). Page 3

The Arms of the branch of 'MAYNE of Rolston' is shown against Marmaduke Mayne of Rolston (bottom of this page) as:"Argent on a bend sable three dexter hands, couped, of the field" [1584: an annulet for difference]; Crest: "Out of a ducal coronet or, a dragon's head ermine." (illustration below). Ref: "Encyclopaedia Heraldica Vol. 2" and The House of Maine Chap IX. The former reference indicates that the same Arms are shared by the Warwickshire Maynes. They are the family settled at Elmdon and covered in the pedigree of the Buckinghamshire Maynes: see http://www.scribd.com/doc/82433306 (Page 35 et seq). This family were settled at Elmdon for four generations from about 1600 when John Mayne (born c.1578), son of Henry of Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, arrived there. John's great grandchildren were born at Elmdon 1680/81.

Discarded Links. Arms, which are similar but not identical to this one above, were produced by the well-known pedigree manufacturer John Thomas Mayne 1792-1843 of the Exeter/Teffont family of Devon, and are therefore rejected out of hand - see JT Mayne . Another lawyer and proven embellisher was John Dawson Mayne 1828-1917 who produced a monster Mayne pedigree of 30 generations many of which are spurious - see JD Mayne . In this pedigree he included Thomas Mayne of Beverley (above) as the youngest of three brothers:John Mayne of Biddenden, Kent 1433, shown as an ancestor of the Mayne(y) family of Kent. Hugh Mayne of Abingdon, Berks, shown as an ancestor of the Mayne families of Buckinghamshire. We have been unable to confirm this neat linkage of three family lines which, if correct, would connect the Maynes of Bucks and Yorks with the old Kent family. It remains un-validated as another bit of interesting wishful thinking!

(4) 1.1.1.1 Christopher Mayne of Rolston ---------------------------------------Spouse: Agnes Constable Agnes was the daughter of Sir William Constable of Hatfield, Herts. Children: William Marmaduke Thomas Elizabeth Margery

(5) 1.1.1.1.1 William Mayne ---------------------------------------William died without issue. (5) 1.1.1.1.2 Marmaduke Mayne of Rolston ---------------------------------------Marmaduke was living at Rolston in Holderness in 1584 when he signed the record for the Visitation by the College of Arms to Yorkshire of 1584/85. "Argent on a bend sable, three dexter hands, couped. An annulet for difference". (An annulet is a ring mark on Arms to distinguish between the Arms of brothers as derived from their father.) He signed as ' Marmadukis Meyne'. He was living in 1589. He bequeathed his estates to his brother Thomas. Spouse: Alice Wright of Flinton, Yorks Alice was the daughter of Robert Wright of Flinton, near Hull, Yorkshire. Page 4

MAYNE of HESSLE, HULL, YORKSHIRE (1350-1460)

Hessle is a town which lies 9 miles south of Beverley, and is also in the East Riding of Yorkshire and in Holderness. Hessle stands on the north bank of the Humber River and is now enveloped in what has become a huge urban area with, at its heart, the great port of KINGSTON UPON HULL five miles downstream. Hessle also lies on the north bank just where the new Humber Bridge built in 1981 crosses the river (see photo above).

(1) 1 Allan Mayne of Hessle, Hull, Yorks ---------------------------------------Spouse: Children: Margaret John (died 1392)

Origin of MAYNE family of HESSLE, Hull, in Holderness, Yorkshire. The source for the four generations of this short pedigree of MAYNE of HESSLE, covering the period 1350-1460, is given at the end (page 10). It is likely that the Hessle Maynes are of the same family as the other Holderness Maynes, of Beverley & Rolston (above), whose pedigree starts with Thomas Mayne of Beverley, buried there about 1458. Thomas is of about the same generation as the brothers, Roger and William Mayne at the end of this Hessle pedigree (page 9). However, a Yorkshire Archaeological Society reference quotes the Arms of Mayne of "Hasle near Hull" as:"Argent on a bend gules & crescents or." - which is quite different to the Arms of Mayne of Beverley & Rolston on page 4!
