Wewentagainstsomeoftheconventionswhen choosinghowourtitleshouldbepresented.Thetitle sequenceweusedhadapowerfulvisualclipinthe backgroundwiththetitleofthedocumentary appearingonthetop.We usedasimple,boldfontina contrastingcolourtothe backgroundsoitstoodout. Manydocumentaries,suchasBBCHorizonillustratedbelow,placetheirtitleagainstaplain background;wechosenottodothisbecausewefeltatopicrelevantbackgroundwouldbemore interestingforourtargetaudience.Also,asmuchofour backgroundfootagewasnotofalcoholandbingedrinking itself,includingthatshownintheopeningofthedocumen tary,wewantedtoensurethatoutstudentsknewstraight awaywhatthetopicofourdocumentarywas.Verbal audiencefeedbackhassuggestedthatthistechniquewas effective.

Asillustratedabove,theintervieweeistypicallyshowninamediumcloseupshotandplaced towardsanoncentralthirdofthescreen,atadeskoraprofessionalsetting.Theydonotlookinto thecameralens,sothatitappearsthattheyarespeakingdirectlytotheinterviewer.Thereisalso oftennotalargeamountofheadroomabovetheinterviewee.Thisconventionalsetupforinter viewsbecameapparentwhenwatchingBBCHorizonsIsAlcoholWorseThanEcstasy?aswellas inSpurlocksSuperSizeMe.Wechosetofollowthisconventionbecausewefeltitworkedwell anddidnotneedtobechallenged.Also,ourteenageaudiencewouldrecognisetheintervieweesas professionalstraightaway.Weusedatripodtoensurethecameraremainedstillanddidntshake whichisalsoaconventionalwayofensuringprofessionalism. Weusedanoffscreennarrator,asthisisawidely usedconventionindocumentaries.Wechosethisas opposedtoproducingadocumentaryinparticipatory modebecausewewouldratherbeshowingtopic relevantfootageinsteadofshotsofthenarrator speaking.Wetriedtoensurethatweillustratedthe Ourbackgroundfootage ofstudents,shownwhilst wordsofthenarratorusingbackgroundfootage. thenarratorwastalking. However,therewerelimitationsonthetypeof backgroundfootagewecoulduse;itwasnotpossible toincludeoriginalfootageofteensbingedrinkingbecauseofobvioushealthandsafetyrules. Instead,wheneverthenarratorwasspeakingaboutstudents,weusedbackgroundfootageof studentsinourcollege.Thisalsohelpedthedocumentarytorelatetoourtargetaudienceofpeople aged1323,soIfeelthatthisworkedwellasanalternativetoperhapsmoretopicrelevant backgroundfootage. Anotherconventionwefollowedwastypingoutstatisticsorfactsonthescreen.Thisprovidesa visualelementthatviewerscanreadinsteadoflistento,againkeepingouraudienceengaged. Anotherwidelyusedconventionthatwechosetofollowis cutawayshotsduringformalinterviews.Wechosetouse thesetokeepouraudienceengaged:wewantedthe interviewswithexpertstobevisuallystimulating.Oftenin documentaries,directorsuserelevantbackgroundfootageor animationstoillustratewhattheprofessionalisspeaking about.WefoundananimationshowingtheliveronYouTube andusedthecameratofilmthefootage,asthisisrelevantto ourtopicofbingedrinking. Ifeltthatthiselementworkedwellbecausetheinterviewee wasdiscussingtheeffectsontheliverfromregularbinge drinking,sotheanimationwasrelevant.Itwasalsosuitable forourtargetaudiencebecauseinteractivefeatureswill attracttheattentionofteenageviewers,soIampleasedthat weusedthisidea.

TheanswerofNoforthearticlewassupportedwithacommentthatthearticlewasslightlytoo textheavy.Weallagreedwiththiscommentandthatourarticlemaynotbecompletelysuitable, particularlyfortheyoungerendofourtargetaudience.However,commentsmadebyother respondentsincludedthatthelargeamountoftextiscompensatedforbythefourimages,large titles,colourfulpullquotesandlightheartedchattystyleofwriting. Someofthestatisticswerenotonthescreenforlongenough Wehadnotnoticedthatthiswasproblematic,buttheabovecomment wasmentionedby3ofourrespondents.However,theamountoftime wehadtoputthestatisticsup,waslimitedbythelengthoftheclipitself, soitwasdifficulttoimproveonthisarea.
