Role of Trade unions in Government enterprises

Generally, Trade Union is the outcome of Industrialization. The growth of Modern organizations having modern technology and large number of workers has necessitated the need /emergence of trade union. The workers feel in secure with regard to their rights and welfare, hence there comes the need of trade unions .The workers may form themselves in to groups and Trade unions help in fighting against their rights and welfare as a whole. Trade Union It is generally an association of workers formed in to safeguard the interests and growth of the workers in the organization. It is permanent association and is formed to protect the socioeconomic as well as the political interests of the workers in any organization. Different countries have different laws regarding the trade unions. In India there are no legal binding for employees to join the trade unions. There are so many public associations in India such as AITUC, Railways federations union etc. The right to associate in any trade unions is recognized by the Indian Constitution itself. The government has given in the recognition so as to communicate the employee needs to the government through these trade unions. Role of Trade Unions in organizations The predominant role is as the name suggest is related to the workers it self. Lets observe some key points about the role of Trade Unions: To protect the jobs and earnings of the workers To ensure a better and safe living condition for the workers Fight against exploitation and ensure fairness and equality among the employees Trade unions help in establishing economic and legal conditions for jobs through industrial and political actions etc They help in preventing an abuse of labor. Trade Unions help in minimizing the discrimination among the workers. Trade unions helps in pressurizing the management to frame policies related to the equality among workers. All the major labour decisions are taken in discussion with the trade unions. This helps in a closer watch among the policies by the trade unions. Trade unions helps in getting retirement benefits to the workers as well as in framing other policies related to the interests of the workers. Trade unions provide in a platform where in the interest, opinions of the workers are shared with the management. Trade unions help in providing a platform to the employees for participation in the management of the organization.

Trade Unions are important as they provide a helping hand to the workers. It also helps in creating a situation where in workers are happy with their working environment. An ideal work environment helps in getting maximum productivity out of the employees .But in India the general situation has changed a quite lot, as trade unions suffers from a lot of drawbacks such as inter-union rivalry , politicization of unions and multiplicity of unions etc. Hence trade unions should always be instituted for the welfare of employees rather than creating problems for them.
