Today most of the networks have operating licences in more than one band mostly in the form of WCDMA900/WCDMA2100 combination. Vendors have different schemas for support of multiband or multicarrier operation. For example, use of Dual Band WCDMA as WCDMA900 in Rural Area and WCDMA2100 in Urban and Dense Urban areas might be more efficient and smarter strategy.

5. Inter RAT Issues

Although Intra RAT Handovers and Neighboring Relations are stable there is still some room to improve Inter RAT Handovers and Neighboring Relations in all 2G to 3G, 3G to 2G, 3G to 4G and 4G to 3G Handovers. Optimal usage of the signaling resources and improvements in both QoS and user experience during Inter RAT Handovers are still one of the biggest challenges for the network operator.

6. Algorithms and Throughput

Independent of the Vendor the basic UMTS WCDMA network needs a variety of algorithms for load balancing, admission control, congestion control and interference control which all affects each other and network performance namely the throughputs and user experience directly or indirectly. Some radical changes in usage or in parameters of all involved algorithms for some specific features might have surprisingly positive effects on network performance increase.

7. Layering Architecture
Most of today's UMTS networks have already 2nd Carrier and a kind of layered infrastructure with overlaying HS and under-laying R99 sites for access, which may not be the optimal solution. 8. Re-Farming Needs
Most of today's networks now have WCDMA Networks on top of existing 2G Networks and LTE is on the way. There are some definite advantages of WCDMA900 in rural areas and also LTE deployments in GSM/DCS spectrums. In all cases a portion of GSM or DCS spectrums might be needed to reallocated for WCDMA900 or LTE in near future.
