PROJECT

An important recent development has been the entry of

Foreign Institutional Investors as participants in the primary and secondary
markets for industrial securities. In the past several years, investments in
developing countries have increased remarkably.. The liberalization policy of
the Government of India has now started yielding results and the country is
poised for a big leap in the industrial and economic growth. The Economy of
the country is mainly based on the development of the corporate sectors.
Funds may be raised through securities market for financing corporate
growth.
Generally, the security prices reflect the performance of a
company. Both economic and non-economic factors invariably affect stock return
behavior. As Cootner (1964) says that the prices of securities are typically very
sensitive, responsive to all events, both real and imagined. Again a major factor
responsible for stock return fluctuations is speculative purchase and sale by
foreign institutional investors. In the present project, it is attempted to test the
equity price movements taking pharmaceuticals and Banking as a sample sector.
Simple moving average is used to find the price movements
of particular scrip and money flow index and relative strength index is used to
know the strength and weakness of shares and also money flowing in these
selected companies. This one guides investors to take correct investment decision.

1.2 INDUSTRY PROFILE

1.2.1 STOCK EXCHANGE

The stock exchange or the secondary market is a highly
organized market for the purchase and sale of second hand quoted of listed

divedends and stock prices increases that may result in capital gain
will share in the wealth of profitable business.

Creating opportunity for small investors

As ooposed to huge to other businesses that

require huge capital outlay, investing in shares in open to both the
large and small investors because a person buys the number of shares
they can afford. Therefore the stock exchange provides the
opportinity for small investors to own shares of the same companies
as large investors.

At the stock exchange share prices rise and fall

depending largely on market forces.share price tend to rise or remain

stable when companies and the economy in general show sign
ofstability and growth.

1.2.5 NSE
In the year 1991 pherwani committee recommended to
establish NSE in

india . in 1992 the government of india authorized IDBI for

establishing this exchange

It is the largest stock exchange in india in terms of daily
turnover and number of trades, for both equities and derivatives trading. NSE has
a market capitalization of around of rs 47,01,923 crores ( 7th august 2009) . though
number of other exchanges exist, NSE and BSE are the two most siginificant
exchanges in india. NSE KEY index is the S&P CNX NIFTY, known as NIFTY ,
an index of index of fifty major stocks weighted by market capitalisation.
Trading on NSE is characterized by four key innovations.

The physical floor was replaced by anonymous, computerized ordermatching with strict prime-time priority.

The limitations of being on Mumbai and the limitations of Indias Public

telecom network were avoided by using satellite communications. Now
NSE has a network of over 2000 satellite terminals all over the country.
On a typical day almost over 3500 traders login to the trading computer
over this network. This is larger than the capacity of the largest trading
floors in the world.

NSE is not owned by brokers. It is a limited liability company and brokers

or franchisees. Therefore NSEs staff is free of pressures from brokers and
is able to perform its regulatory and enforcement functions more
effectively.

Traditional practices of unreliable fortnightly settlement cycle with escape

clause of badla were replaced by a strict weekly settlement cycle without
badla.

global economic crisis, according to a stress test done by the Reserve Bank of
India (RBI).

1.5 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES
To analyse the stock price behaviour of the selective
company scripts in the pharmaceutical sector
To measure strength of money flows

in the above

selected companies
SECONDARY OBJECTIVES
To study the price movements in the stock market
To find the Strength and Weakness of a Particular
Scrip
To recapitualte the key findings and offer
suggestion to investors
1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
A better understanding of the stock market trend
will facilitate allocation of finanacial resources to the most profitable investment
opportunity. The study on fluctuation in equity market helps in understanding the
behaviour of equity market.
The simple moving average indicates the buy and
sell signal to investors. This helps investors in taking good decision when
investing in equity shares
This study also helps the investors to ascertain the
risk. Also the money flow index helps the people to know about the money in and
out of a security. When the money flow is higher it is recommended to buy and if
the money flow is low it can be sold.

12

1.7 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

We cannot predict the price accurately

whether the price is moving up or down . we can

predict the price based on the assumptions

There is no guarantee that what has worked

for past year may continue to work in future.

The study is confined to 1 year and hence the

changes taken place before and after have not

taken into consideration

The study is confined only to three months in

case of money flow index and relative strength

index

1.8 REVIEW OF LITERATURE

D. Sarkar studies the share price behavior using the time
series data. He found that the retained earnings had on effect share price while the
influence of dividend was very much significant.
Prof. Leopold A. Bernstein (1975) in his article had
defended the function and value of fundamental investment analysis as the basis
of successful investment in equity shares. He had argued that even though
psychological and other factors accounted 50% of price changes the other 50% of
it was only due to fundamental factors.
Balasubramaniam. K. (1994) examined the behavior of
stock returns in India. He took the daily and weekly prices of 90 shares listed in
BSE. He applied auto correlation analysis; runs test and filter techniques for the
study. He concluded that share price behavior is not random and hence random
walk hypothesis cannot be established for
Karen Beynon and Andrew Porter examined the
pharmaceutical sector offers some of the most exciting financial and business
opportunities. The Indian pharmaceutical sector is witnessing the tremendous
growth with the contract research . the countrys pharmaceutical market is a US$
7.3 billion opportunity with a domestic retail market expected to cross US$ 12-13
billion in 2013.
Chan and Chen (1991) examined the difference in
structural characteristics that lead firms of different size to react differently to the
same economic news. By using time series analysis they found that return

14

difference between small and large firms could be captured by the responses of
high leverage firms and marginal firms to economic views
Neeley(1998) reconciles the fact that using technical
trading rules to trade against US intervention in foreign exchange market can be
profitable, yet long term intervention tends to be profitable
With softer monitary policies and consequent reduction
in bank lending rates and benchmark G-securities, action would shift from core
income to treasury and asset quality said by Amitabh Chakraborty,
president( Equities), Religare Securities.
According to the Analysts, any Fresh buy on these
bank stocks can attract a return of 15-20% in a year . Mean while, market slow
down does not seem to have played any spoil spot for banks financial
performance.
Lomamaysky and Wang (2000) examines the
effectiveness of technical analysis on US stocks from 1962 to 1996 and finds that
over the 31 year sample period value. Several technical Indicators do provide
Investment Information and may some practical value.

2. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research methodology is the primary and basic aspect of any
kind of project report. In this part we have to consider the method of data
collection, tools and techniques which are going to applied in analysis and
interpretation .
2.1 RESEARCH DESIGN
This project analyses the equity market and fluctuations in
India. It measures the risk involved in investing in Stock . Moving average is
applied for selected companies which would give the investors a sell or buy
signal. Money flow index is applied to know the strength of money flowing in and
out of the security.
2.2 SOURCES OF DATA

Data may be classified as two types. There are primary

data and secondary data.
1. Primary data means the data collection for first hand
2. Secondary data which is already collection for same
or other uses.
For this study secondary data is collected. Print media and
internet is used for data collection. The data was obtained from the national stock
exchange website. For this purpose daily closing price of 10 companies included
in the NSE were taken and their price movements are computed and studied. The
companies I have chosen are

16

PHARMACEUTICAL SECTOR
Cipla
Ranbaxy
Sun pharma
Glen mark
Auro pharma
BANKING SECTOR
SBI
Yes Bank
IOB
Dena Bank
Axis Bank
2.3

METHOD OF SAMPLING
Since the purpose of analysis three sectors are

taken . and from the two sectors. Five companies are selected in each sector.
Therefore sampling used is judgment sampling . In this method item of sampling
are selected on certain predetermined criteria..
2.4 TIME PERIOD COVERED
The Time Period of the study is one year.from May
2009 Apr 2010
2.5 TOOLS APPLIED
In this study technical tools applied are
1. Simple Moving Average

17

2. Money Flow Index

3. Relative Strength

TECHNICAL ANAYSIS
Technical anaysis refers to study on stock market itself
rather than external factors which are reflected in the market . it involves the
volume and the price traded in the market.
TOOLS USED
1. SIMPLE MOVING AVERAGE
In technical average moving average is one of the
key trend lines that are plotted on chart reflecting the closing price over
weeks.when the moving average moves above or below the daily chart it may
generate buy or sell signal.
We can interpret a moving average by comparing
the relationship between the moving average of securits price with its securits
price itself.
BUY SIGNAL: When the securitys price rises above its moving average
SELL SIGNAL: When the securitys price falls below its moving average

2. MONEY FLOW INDEX

Money flow index measures the strength of
money flowing in and out of the stock. It is the indicator that measures the
strength of money flowing in and out of the security. The formula for
calculating MFI IS
AVERAGE PRICE OF THE DAY= Days high + Days low + Close

18

------------------------------------3
Money Flow = Avg price x Days volume
If the price was up in the particular day it is Positive Money
Flow and it can be concluded that the stock position is good during the particular
day and this the signal to buy the stock and on the other hand if the the price was
low in the particular day it can be concluded that the stock position in not
satisfactory and this the signal to sell the particular stock
3. RELATIVE STRENGTH INDEX(RSI)
RSI was developed by Wells Wider. RSI is
used to find the inherent technical strength and weakness of particular Scrip.
RSI can be calculated for a scrip by adopting the following formula.
RSI = 100 {100 }
{ ------ }
{ 1+ RS}
RS = Average Gain per day
---------------------------Average loss per day
The broad rule is if the RSI crosses seventy
there may be a down turn and it is time to pick up the scrip. If the RSI falls
below thirty it is time to pick up scrip.
