In Your Shoes: Champions gather for some sole-searching

Monday saw the seventh Foundation Champion Workshop, an annual gathering of our key volunteers from Hilton Worldwide hotels and offices from around the Europe region. Hosted by Hilton London Kensington, the Workshop was themed In Your Shoes, an exercise in empathy for each other and for our beneficiaries, the young people who we are seeking to support. What is it really like to undertake the Foundation Champion role, on top of busy day jobs? How can we understand the needs of our beneficiaries and find ways to best support them? Simon Vincent, Chairman of the Foundation, attended and presented Awards to those who have excelled during 2011, for a full list of our winners please see pages 4-6 below. Congratulations to Hilton Amsterdam and Hilton Avisford Park whose teams raised the most against their targets in 2011 and came top of their league tables. In spite of a difficult time for the charity sector, HCF has had its most fantastic year to date, raising 2,427,630 in 2011, up a massive 27% on 2010. This wonderful result is a reflection of everybodys hard work and dedication and translates into a significant fund used to support disadvantaged children and young people across Europe. Continued...

Our key volunteers from across Europe convened at Hilton London Kensington for their annual workshop.

The delegates enjoyed a performance from The Kaos Signing Choir for Deaf and Hearing Children, a choir for children aged 4-17, some of whom are deaf or are hard of hearing. They performed two songs One World and Respect - see this link for more!

Seeing the results of your hard work

A number of charities were invited to the Workshop to share news of how HCF funding has helped them in their work. 305 different charities and good causes were supported in 2011, so it is only ever possible to hear from a small selection of those HCF helps. Nonetheless, behind every grant made and charity partner supported, there are individual young people who directly benefit. Christopher Place is a speech, language and therapy centre, which supports pre-school children who are deaf or hard of hearing with a holistic range of services from occupational therapy and speech therapy through to play and sensory development. Three families attended to thank everyone for their support. One parent, Jim Griffin, said it is the only place, possibly in

the UK, which offers such expert support and services for his fouryear old son, Robert. Another parent, Dushyant Patel explained what a relief it was for him and his wife to find such a centre of expertise for their daughter Amaya, who was born profoundly deaf but now aged 2 is really progressing. HCF has helped to support the development of their sensory garden and outdoor space, which is at a premium in their central London location. Amber Foundation, a Wiltshire based charity for young homeless people who have lost their way in life and need support, also attended. The charity has benefited from support from HCF and also through a local partnership with Hilton Swindon (see more on page 17). The delegates heard from Hollie, who had experienced a chaotic upbringing and suffered from family breakdown, moving with her mother www.hilton-foundation.org.uk

between 24 addresses during her teens and leaving home when her mother settled with a new partner and she was no longer welcome. Hollie had ended up with an eating disorder and very low self esteem, compounded by a two-year relationship in which she experienced domestic violence. She had come to Amber and had established some new goals for herself and found her self-worth. She had undertaken a boating challenge which showed her what could be achieved. She is looking forward to training to become a teacher for children with special needs. Dean also shared his story; he had been thrown out of his home aged 15 and had been drifting and staying with friends ever since and had been in prison for drugs-related offences. Most recently he had been living in a tent, drinking and taking drugs to escape when he found out about Amber through a friend and was referred by his probation officer.

Dean said he had now been drugs and drink-free for 5 months and had found some goals to aim for. He has been recently selected to go to Borneo on a volunteer visit, for which he has to fundraise and plan and is excited about his new life. Harvey, 9 years old, explained the work of Wheelies Sport and Activity Club, a Macclesfield-based charity which had benefitted from the Manchester 10K Giveaway in December 2011. Harvey suffers from cerebral palsy and this impedes his physical movement. Without a trace of shyness, he explained to the 100 delegates that Wheelies is a club for children with disabilities to meet and have fun trying all sorts of sports and activities which build

confidence. It is a place for friendship and he said to everyone they had helped to make a big difference a HUGE difference - A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE! The highlight of the Wheelies year is a trip to the Calvert Trust (another of HCFs previous beneficiaries) in the Lake District. Funding from HCF will help pay for club members to attend the 2012 expedition. Harvey shared the fact that the zip-wires and abseiling sort those who are brave from those who are scared; his mother Angela is apparently scared doing these activities!

long day and he was absolutely exhausted by the end of it but has enjoyed telling everyone at school how it went.
Angela Osborne, Chair of Trustees, Wheelies Sport and Activity Club

The presentations were very good and moving and it really does put into perspective the value of the fundraising we do.
Philippa Redwood, Hilton Avisford Park

Harvey had a fantastic time and was very proud of himself, it was a very

Emotive presentations were delivered by Harvey (above with his mother Angela), Hollie (above right) and Dean (right) from our guest charities.

Budding actors?
During the Workshop the Champions were encouraged to work in groups to create short videos that explored a number of themes: motivation, charity, success, community, support and teamwork. Facilitated by digital artists from social enterpise FreQOUT! and the charity Vital Regeneration, the groups used the technique of stock frame animation to capture their concepts to film. These were shown at the end of the day and the final versions will soon be published on Youtube.

Sharing experience
The delegates heard a message of support from Bob Brooks in the Hilton brand team and were encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas during the day through sessions on fundraising, finance and Open space, facilitated by change consultancy Transcend, which enabled the participants to explore and discuss themes that they had come up with, which included

It was inspirational and I have many new ideas after speaking with other champions. It was very emotional to see and hear from the children. It was also such a fun day and everyone was so friendly.

Hosting a special little girl: Milly

HCF has a partnership in place with Rays of Sunshine Childrens Charity, which grants wishes for seriously ill children. Often the wishes need an overnight stay for the family, and Hilton has donated numerous complimentary or low cost stays to enable the charity to extend its wishes to more children. Last week, the CEO of Rays called the HCF office to say how thrilled they had been with a recent Wish for Milly Adkins. Milly is eight years old and has a brain tumour. She is blind in one eye, and because the cancer is spreading, recently her parents have had to make the impossible decision to have Millys seeing eye removed to try to prolong her life. Millys wish was to meet the boy band JLS before this operation. The team at Hilton London Canary Wharf heard Milly was coming to stay and that she is a JLS fan. They wanted to do something special and they achieved exactly this! As well as decorating Millys room with loads of colourful balloons and banners, the family were treated to a breakdancing routine by Assistant Night Manager Ottavio Nota and Fabian Amici, a Bournemouth University student who is doing an internship at the hotel. Riccardo Ranzato and Katie Katynski, Guest Relations Managers at the hotel, organised things with their team and looked after Milly and her family during their stay. If you have a few minutes we do encourage you to watch the heart-warming video. I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to Hilton London Canary Wharf for making Millys stay so fantastic! The team went totally above and beyond for Milly and her family, and they had the most wonderful stay. We cannot express enough how appreciative we are of everything you did. Lydia Jackson, Wish Granter, Rays of Sunshine
Milllys wish to meet JLS was granted. She also visited Hamleys Toy Store and took a ride in a limousine and on the London Eye and the family were looked after by Hilton London Canary Wharf.

Young people in Munich get a chance to shine

On Friday 3rd February, the Kids an die Macht (Power to the Kids) event was successfully rounded off with a wonderful charity dinner at Hilton Munich Park, supported by Hilton Munich City. 25 children from the hotels local charity Artists for Kids had been working for two days at the hotel, experiencing all different kind of jobs from receptionist to General Manager to Spa manager. Cluster Area General Manager Marcus-Milan Arandelovic said: We wanted to give these kids an inside view of the hotel business and provide them with a new perspective. Most of them never thought of applying for a job or traineeship at a Hilton hotel and were kind of scared in the beginning. But they all became more and more secure in their hotels roles and they had a great time with our team members and guests. One of the girls who participated in the 1st Power to the kids project is now in the 2nd year of her apprenticeship. During Friday evening, 140 guests joined the Hilton team, actor Max Tidof and his wife and of course the children, for a special dinner created by German star and TV chef Alexander Herrmann. Nina Eichinger, daughter of the famous producer Bernd Eichinger who founded Artists for Kids, and comedian Florian Simbeck presented the evening and all the guests enjoyed not just a delicious menu, but extraordinary service by the young people, live music and an entertaining show. 26,063 was raised in total for Artists for Kids. This will be used to support their country home project and apprenticeship programme.

Children explore Hilton Paris Orly Airport

Team members and the Blue Energy committee at Hilton Paris Orly Airport organized a Day in a Hotel Life for the Fondation dAuteuil, a local orphanage for a group of 12 children aged from 6-12. The children participated in a cooking lesson with the Executive Chef, Fabrice Pedini and prepared their own delicious tarte aux pommes, the famous French apple tart. They also visited the rooms, kitchens and discovered the backstage of the hotel. Christophe Bellonie the General Manager and Dominique Lorent the Foundation Champion were helped by Alexia, Alexandra, Mireille, Stphanie, Vronique, Lotfi and Serge to look after the children. Dominique said:

They left the hotel with stars in their eyes. It was a happy occasion

Hilton Reading helps local pre-school

As part of its recent 10K Giveaway, Hilton Reading donated 200 to a local pre-school to help it develop its outdoor play equipment. Carolyn Booth, Administrator at Crawshay Preschool said: Thank you for the generous gift of 200, which we have spent on a system of water chutes and stands to extend our outdoor play. The children absolutely love the new equipment and have experimented with running balls, cars and coloured water down the guttering. It is great to see their excitement with the new equipment and it is also good to extend our Knowledge and Understanding of the World area of the curriculum. Some of our children who have English as a second language and others with delayed speech development have found ways to communicate through playing with the chutes.

Hilton Worldwide Sales and Marketing Volunteering

On 1st February, as part of their global sales and marketing conference in London, delegates from sales teams took part in a community-spirited afternoon of activities as a practical expression of Travel With Purpose. HCF was responsible for three of the groups, with Chicken Shed Theatre, Youth Sport Trust and Vital Regeneration providing a range of activities to engage and enthuse those involved. The group at Chicken Shed took part in various interactive and thought-provoking drama sessions.

They were split into five groups and joined by young students with a variety of physical and learning disabilities, exploring themes such as the History of the Olympics and the History of Hilton Hotels. They used expression and body movements to describe the conference week and finished by developing a rap song. Chicken Shed is a special theatre which offers BTEC courses in drama for young people with physical and learning disabilities. It stages productions which foster and promote inclusivity. Five delegates who took part said it was the best thing about the conference so far! Another group attended the Capital City Academy in Willesden, where the Youth Sport Trust had organised an afternoon of sports and

marketing challenges. The charity benefitted and the young people got to practice their leadership skills. Our third group braved the ice cold weather and spent the afternoon clearing the gardens of vulnerable residents on the Lisson Green Estate, in the borough of Westminster. Despite its world fame for the Houses of Parliament, the borough has pockets of severe deprivation and poverty, with many residents needing extra support. I really enjoyed taking part! Bas de Graaf, Hilton Singapore The afternoon at Chicken Shed was inspiring, gave food for thought and helped us to understand each other a lot better. Marco Simon, Hilton Worldwide Sales

Gardens are cleared and spruced up, while inclusive drama and sport led by young people are the order of the day for others. For more photos and videos, visit our Facebook page today.

Hilton Dubai Jumeirah cares for local charities

News from outside the Europe region shows how other hotels are expressing their commitment to Travel with Purpose. The dynamic, passionate and engaged Team Members of Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Resort & Residences hit the roads of Dubai in solidarity with children who have limited or no access to quality primary education in developing countries . They walked 3km, which symbolized the average distance millions of children around the world have to walk to go to school. Glad to demonstrate once again their support to their established partner, Dubai Cares, the Team Members from Front Office, Kitchen, F&B, Engineering, Executive Office, HR, Spa and Finance joined various companies and over 3,500 residents, and raised funds to help girls to gain access to primary school. To celebrate Fashion Week, the hotel hosted a Charity Fashion Show on 27th January, giving young fashion students aged 15-17 a stage to express their talent and creativity. Supported by Galleries Lafayette, the fashion show was a great success with over 160 guests attending, and raising US$ 4,660 for Dubai Cares to provide 570 additional girls with access to school. Team members from various departments planned the event, prepared the ballroom and the stage, welcomed guests and press, and made sure the show was memorable for every one.

On 29th January, Hilton Dubai Jumeirah welcomed Al Noor Training Center for Special Needs Children, for their 9th consecutive Ladies Luncheon. The Hotel sponsored the event for 200 ladies to gather and raise funds for children in the UAE. A grand total of US$ 20,420 raised and donated to Al Noor from an auction, jewellery and ticket sales.

Updates from around the region
Hospice visit
On the evening of 8 February three volunteers ventured off to Richard House Childrens Hospice in Beckton. The three volunteers were Stephen Garth, Manjot Rai and Riccardo Ranzato from Hilton London Canary Wharf. . Their mission: to serve wine and cheese supplied by the hotel at a showcase Open Evening held by Richard House. The event was called I am Richard House and was an opportunity for the hospice to display the artwork, photos and short films made by the children and families that are cared for at Richard House. Stephen said: All three of us had a fantastic evening (Manjot in particular enjoyed meeting Professor Umbridge from the Harry Potter films). Riccardo worked the room with charm and professionalism and was a real ambassador for the hotel, whilst I made some good contacts for the planned charity ball for Richard House to be held at our hotel in June. All three of us came away with a real positive attitude from the event and it was good to see where the money we raise at the hotel goes to. What a good way to meet some of the other corporate sponsors of Richard House and see the great work that is done at the hospice.

Valentines Dinner Dance for children in Poland

Can you feel the love tonight was the motto of this years Valentines Day Ball, which took place at Hilton Warsaw Hotel and Convention Centre. Children from Polish elementary schools under the care of partner charity the Foundation for Corporate Social Responsibility (FCSR) were the centre of attention. The evening included an artistic performance with the children, featuring well known music from Disneys motion pictures. As part of the event, children from schools in Klepczewo, Rusinowo, Lekowo and Oparzno had the opportunity to visit Warsaw and see the sights. During the visit Hilton Warsaw took care of the childrens accommodation and meals. Foundation Champion Monika Mikulska said: It was an amazing event. The Banqueting Team led by Ania Wierus prepared amazing decoration for the Ballroom and tables and delivered extraordinary service during the dinner. Our kitchen team with the Executive Chef Sven Thomsen prepared a delicious 3-course menu including pink roasted barbarie duck breast with port wine jus, apple celery mash and grilled zucchini. Our F&B team with the Department Head Michal Szostak took care of the rest of the meals for children during their stay. We give a very big thank you to sponsors Coca Cola Polska and Grupa Zywiec for providing beverages. FSCR runs two big programmes throughout the year which the hotel also supports: Hot-Meal-a-Day, which provides meals for 2,500 underfed elementary school pupils from the north-west of Poland and The-Fresh-Milk-Program which provides milk to the children from that region.

Helping Donnas Dream House

Team members at Hilton Blackpool were devastated to hear that arsonists had attacked one of the childrens charities they support, and one very close to our hearts, Donnas Dream House for terminally ill children. The Dream House provides holidays of a lifetime for families to spend what is sometimes their last holiday together, and have some fun and good times, and create memories to cherish. As soon as the charity team at Hilton Blackpool heard the news, they started fundraising and managed to raise 1,090 in one month, an amazing amount in such a short time. This total was handed over to the charity to kickstart their fundraising Valentine Ball at the hotel. The hotel charity team were delighted to meet Kieran who attended the Ball with his family and stayed at the hotel for a fun weekend whilst the Dream House is closed for restoration work. Kieran, aged 11, suffered bone cancer and had to have his leg amputated, and wears a prosthetic limb. Kieran chatted to the team and said that he had a fabulous time; he couldnt wait to come back to Blackpool when Donnas Dream House re-opens in March. Kieran is so brave and his illness didnt stop him chatting up the ladies in their ball gowns one bit! Due to the seriousness of the fire, lots of very sick children were unable to take their holidays over Christmas. The charity team at Hilton Blackpool helped raise a further 9,000 on the evening for the charity and had a fabulous evening. This was made even better by www.hilton-foundation.org.uk meeting Kieran, and hearing the news that the arsonists had all been arrested, and that the Dream House will re-open mid March, sooner than planned due to the support and commitment of all their followers. This means childrens holidays can resume, and there will be laughter once again in the Dream House. The Trustees of Donnas Dream House would like to thank you all for the continued support of our charity and all those in the local community that benefit from your leadership and motivation of your staff at Hilton Blackpool in the work of the Hilton in the Community Foundation. Len Curtis MBE, founder and Trustee of Donnas Dream House

Amberteers build and sail their own craft across the river as part of their training and skills development. The Amberteers who visited Hilton Swindon were too shy and nervous for a photo!

Valuable interview practice at Hilton Swindon

As part of its award-winning partnership with The Amber Foundation, a charity which supports young homeless people, Hilton Swindon offered the opportunity to give interview practice for the young people who live at Amber, Amberteers. The interviews were carried out by Hannah Chick, Front Office Manager, Merel Block, Cluster HR Officer, Mark Dixon, C&E Sales Executive and Rebecca Groom, F&B Supervisor. A group of ten Amberteers attended and after facing the gruelling standard Hilton questions, they received some personal feedback around the interview itself, how they answered the questions, their appearance and also guidance was given concerning their CVs. Steve Upton, Assistant Centre Manager at Bythesea Lodge in Trowbridge which runs the Amber programme commented: I dont quite know what you did up there today, but I have a lot of Amberteers walking around on the ceiling! Thanks to you and your team for today. Jason Davies, Deputy Hotel Manager, who welcomed the Amberteers to the hotel, said he was thrilled with the outcome and saw it as a great start to the years Foundation activities, As well as fundraising during 2012, our aim is to support Amber in other ways, such as todays mock interviews and joint community projects. At the end of the interviews, which were for a casual Food & Beverage Assistant, two people would have made it through to second interview stage, three would have been offered second interviews in a different department and one Amberteer is being invited back for a second interview with the Head Chef. Best of luck to that individual and well done to the team at Hilton Swindon for exploring a whole variety of ways in which the hotel can support its charity partnership. As well as a Burlesque Evening planned for the end of March, the hotel is also about to start a Suit for Success collection of suits and accessories which can benefit young homeless people and give them a head start for interviews and the workplace. www.hilton-foundation.org.uk
