Consider the different types of love poems as you prepare to write your own love poem. 1. Read the following poems: "Red Roses Were Her Favorite" Browning's "How Do I Love Thee" "The Bean Eaters" "On My First Son" "My Papa's Waltz" (make sure to listen to the reader's commentary!) 2. What type of emotions did these poems cause you to have? What was different about each of the poems? (Make sure to say something about each poem) 3. Who is the speaker of the poem? (Make sure to say something about each poem) 4. Who do you think the audience is? (Make sure to say something about each poem) 5. Judging from the details and diction you have identified, what is the tone of the poem? In other words, what is the speakers attitude toward the subject of the poem? Some tone words are cheerful, bitter, mournful, somber, matter-of-fact, angry, nostalgic, and compassionate, but you may certainly use others. Be sure to include an explanation of why you have characterized the tone of the poem as you have. (Make sure to say something about each poem) 6. Characterize the nature of love in the poems that you read. 7. Now that you are familiar with a variety of poems, it is your turn! First, go to the following websites to review some basics of writing poetry: The Basics, and Videos by Poet Laureate--there are nine short videos so make sure to click on links to the right of the screen after viewing the video. After reviewing your knowledge of poetry, please write your own "love" poem. It must be at least 15 lines long, and that is the only requirement. Simply be creative, and turn it in by Monday.
