Students called to Embrace the Power of Dance

Prof. Hanna makes her presentation during the Power of Dance lecture

The Language and Performing Arts department recently hosted Prof. Judith Hanna, a cultural anthropologist at the University of Maryland, at the Allen Grove annex, Nairobi Campus. Prof. Hanna gave a lecture on the Power of Dance and based her presentation on Nigerian dance & culture from the Igbo tribe, and the Kenyan 1963 celebration of independence. During the lecture, Professor Hanna wowed the audience with her dance moves as she explained how the women in the Igbo tribe would dance depending on the event taking place. She demonstrated certain songs and illustrated the specic dance styles that accompanied them. She continued to explain how the different songs had taken a historical journey during a period where women were revolting against men and how dance played a major role. The don emphasized the importance that expression such as dance has in liberation and rekindling unity and togetherness as a people, urging the audience to look back at where they had come from and how they did things because the culture was rich with great diversity. This would ensure that they would not loose their heritage and sense of self. The lecture, which was attended by both staff and faculty, is one of the key events planned by the department of Language and Performing Arts in its quest to grow the department.
