Conclusion and Evaluation

The patterns and trends stated in data are that the beans or peas volume are continuously decreasing while the marbles, control variable, is almost stable or decreasing slightly. From this trend we can assume that the beans and peas are absorbing oxygen. According to AP Biology 5: Cell Respiration http://www.scribd.com/doc/7570252/APBiology-Lab-Five-Cell-Respiration, the data shows same pattern as mine. For beads (marbles for mine), the volume was constant at 1.38 mL, while the germinating peas were dropping from 1.35 mL to 0.57 mL. The second trial of this data shows same trend as the first trial. The cells needs to do cellular respiration to have energy called ATP. This is done by breaking down nutrient molecules, and gas exchange between oxygen and carbon dioxide. While doing aerobic respiration, which is a type of cellular respiration, the cell absorbs oxygen and emits carbon dioxide. In this experiment, the cotton with KOH absorbs the carbon dioxide. Than, the amount of oxygen absorbed by the peas and beans are valid, but not the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by the cells. The pipet is inside of the water which helps to sustain the continuous temperature and the gas pressure inside. The temperature is important because the chemical reaction and enzymes or body functions are heavily dependent on the temperature. Therefore, the liquid inside of pipet goes down toward the water when the beans and peas do cellular respiration. In my data, the number for liquid written in green beans and red peas pipets was moving down closer to the beans and peas. For trial 1, the liquid in 5 green peas pipet went down to 0.09 mm from 0.30 mm, while marbles went to from 0.40 mm to 0.34 mm. In trial 2, the liquid in 5

red beans went down to 0.11 mm from 0.36 mm, while marbles went 0.66 mm to 0.50 mm. The pattern is same for trial 3 and 4. The results supports my hypothesis that the germinated beans and peas require oxygen to do cellular respiration, and the cellular respiration is necessary for getting energy called ATP to sustain their lives.

It is rather better to measure the volume of the beans and peas. It is because the amount of cell correlates to the volume and surface area, which determines the rate of gas exchange by cellular respiration. - The random biological variation is not valid for this experiment. - The instrumental errors can be 1 mm for measuring pipet.
