I don't know how they expect you to do anything when your keyboard and mouse does NOT work. I also don't believe it is a virus. From my experience it is most likely the drivers on your computer. Which most likely you will need to take somewhere as I did to get fixed. It costed me about 100 bucks. I

feel like I am probably like you where I don't know tons of stuff about a computer but just enough to get me by. Report <#> *Jimi* - Sep 28, 2009 7:59pm BST Hi I had this same problem earlier today using wireless mouse and keyboard. One uses usb and other connects to pcs2. Neither were working from initial bootup, not at bios screen or in between or at the xp login screen. So of course safe mode, bios etc could not be accessed. What I did was unplug tower, open and remove battery from the motherboard (looks like a big watch battery, or a shiny nickel) might need a little flat head screwdriver to pop it out. I plugged the computer back in, started it up (you will receive an error because battery is removed but dont worry just keep reading) and keyboard started working only for the time the bios could be accessed though, not once windows started loading. Turn off your computer again unplug power cable, reinstall battery you removed. Reconnect power cable, boot up and immediately access your bios (mine is the delete key but yours may be something else, it should say on the screen when it first starts booting). In the bios search for your usb controller page using arrow keys and enter button. On my bios usb 2.0 was the only one enabled, there were 2 more types of usb that were set to disabled. I enabled all of them SAVE** and exit bios. When computer restarts you should be back to normal, mouse and keyboard working. One more thing while you are in the bios find your boot sequence page and set your order as cdrom booting first next harddrive or A:/ if you prefer, that way you will never be locked out of reinstalling windows because your harddrive was booting first where problems occur. Good luck. Report <#> *DD* - Jan 3, 2010 9:15pm GMT Thanks Jimi....to those having this problem...Jimi's advice worked for me Report <#> *ITGirl* ? So thanks Jimi, it is obviously not a Windows issue! Report <#> *donnie* ? wagnikon <#47> - Oct 27, 2009 7:59pm GMT yes it may be a virus. theres trojan ones that stops function of keyboards and mouse. and usually attacks once ur on windows. i work w hp and microsoft, so for a quick advise, go for what the other guy said here, do a scan on safemode, find the virus on registry, delete. disable unlikely apps on msconfig. reboot. if keyboard is working on bios and not on windows, u can go on safemode. but if keyboard is totally not working AT ALL, u may wanna reinstall the driver of it or check for bad ram. changing keyboard wont do it. its not the keyboard's that faulty, its all in the pc, wether its caused by a virus, or wrong bios settings, corrupted driver or bad ram. keyboard turn on? Report <#> *Jerry* - Nov 30, 2009 1:23pm GMT I have a problem with my usb mouse and keyboard not being recognized by windows xp. They work perfectly in the environment prior to windows startup (I can access setup, the bios page, and the F8 screen). Therefore I deduct that i do not have a hardware problem. The F8 screen will not get me to the command prompt no matter what I do. If I got to this point I could access my root drive and change the drivers but no luck. Do you have any suggestions? This all started when I inadvertently disconnected my wireless mouse and keyboard USB plug. Ever since Windows will not recognize any type of keyboard and mouse input. This is my backup computer and I'm wondering if I used my system reinstallation CD and started from scratch would the proper drivers be reinstalled (I'm thinking yes, but don't want to loose data for no good reason)? Thanx for any help. Report <#> *Jerry* - Dec 2, 2009 10:15am GMT I noticed your advice and am having a similar problem. When I attempt to start windows in the safe mode, requesting the c:prompt I am still not able to get access because windows XP still takes me to the login window requesting me to sign on as a guest or as myself. Since my keyboard and mouse don't work thats as far as I can go. My USB mouse and keyboard work perfectly in the DOS environment. Using my restore disk (from Dell, I'm using a 9100 Dimension) I was able to control "C" out of a batch file and get to my c: drive but the restore files are in another partition and I believe I'm really only in a ramdrive (although I'm still shown as in C:\). In any event, all of the files that I have access to at that point tell me (when I try to run them) that they only run in the Windows environment. Do you have any suggestions? I'm retired and really can't afford a computer repair and I actually enjoy this type of challenge. Years ago I started with a CPM machine and gradually migrated to the IBM format. I'm fairly comfortable in the DOS environment. In the event you notice this, thanx for any help you can provide. negril45@yahoo.com, Jerry. Answer +34 moins <#> plus <#> Report <#> annomyous Sep 18, 2009 12:11am BST I agree you guys are idiots......you may want to consider handing in your A+ membeship cards. The problem as to why the system can't load into windows is the protocols for USB are loaded on Winodws startup but our client can't type in the password to get into windows you have a chicken or the egg problem not a virus not a keyloagger and the client dose not need to go out a get a new computer. Now speakin to the client One soultion you may try is installing a PCi card that has PS/2 ports sticking out of the back(the old style round ports for a mouse and keyborad) this requires opening the computer and installing the card and getting your hands on an old style keyboard and mouse. If you don't feel comfortable rattleing around inside your computer or if the computer is out of warrenty then call around to some local computer stores tell them you need a PCi card with PS/2 ports when you find one ask if they will install the card (most stores are happy to do it ) then you can plug in the mouse and keyboard type in your password at window bootup and get into windows. And we can all write into micorsoft asking why they decided to make the drivers for USB windows specific cause it make IT jobs much harder. Also the another thing to have checked is the services for USB again you'll need an it tech like myself to check that but again if windows services for USB are turned off then the USB protocols won't load on startup of windows causeing the same problem....the moral to the story hail to PS/2. <#breadScrumb> <#newanswer> View all 8 comments <#> Report <#> *annomyous * - Sep 18, 2009 12:22am BST

Answer +14 moins <#> plus <#> Report <#> billw129 Aug 19, 2009 6:20am BST Ok the problem is we are tring to discuss 2 different issues in one topic. If your mouse and keyboard do not work from the time that you turn your computer on (like when it says to push F1 or what ever it is on your machine to enter setup, or if you push F8 over and over again and it does not give you option to enter safe mode) Then you have a bios issue. First thing I would do is power down and unplug computer and remove the bios battery for 30 seconds and then reinstall or find the reset bios jumper on your computer set it for 30 seconds and replace. If your mouse and keyboard are not working after you see the windows startup screen then that is either a driver or virus issue. If it is drivers then you should load the drivers listed a few topics above. To do that you can put your hard drive as slave in another machine or get a USB to IDE adapter and power supply and load it from the usb port of another machine. That should fix it. If it is the issue with Bios and removing the battery does not fix it then you have either a bios virus or a bad motherboard. You could go and get a pci card for PS2 mouse and keyboard connections. Hope this helps. <#breadScrumb> <#newanswer> Answer +7 moins <#> plus <#> Report <#> TheLonelyStoner Jun 13, 2009 4:41pm BST hey i got into safe mode wih net working i get to log in screen same thing unable to move mouse and keys <#breadScrumb> <#newanswer>

keyboard does not work. I cannot press f8. how can I get to safe mode????? Report <#> *L.* - Jul 6, 2009 9:14pm BST Hi dstew. I am having the same problem on another comp. I really believe it is a BIOS virus (which initializes the comp & S/W) that is shutting down the keyboard + mouse (thus no F8 / Safe Mode loading), and the loading of Windows. Since I don't know how to reload BIOS info which I think it needs more expertise + equip than I have, I'm taking it to the Geek Squad. Lemme know if you figured out how to fix this, since I'm going this week but don't really want to spend the $$! ; ) Report <#> *dstew* - Jul 6, 2009 9:35pm BST I still have not found an answer. There is a mouse that is part of a set with the keyboard, but the mouse works still. I know that it's connected to the computer properly via it's receiver because every time I click a key, the computer clicks. Also, there is a crude mouse on the keyboard, and oddly enough the shitty little mouse and it's buttons ON THE KEYBOARD work, but the rest of the regular keyboard keys don't function, but are always met with a click from the computer. WTF? I'm fairly computer savvy, but I am completely stumped as to how to fix it.

Vista Home Premium 32bit Keyboard is the Windows Wireless Entertainment Keyboard 7000 If you want hardware specs I need to know how to find them without a keyboard, sorry. It's an intel quadcore for CPU A fairly high end Nvidia card 4GB of RAM And anything specific or otherwise further in the respect of hardware, like I said, will require instructions on where to get said information without a keyboard. :P Thanks to anyone in advance. <#breadScrumb> <#newanswer> Answer +1 moins <#> plus <#> Report <#> dlt Sep 6, 2009 9:02am BST i had the exact problem happen to me tonight on a dell dimension 9150, couldnt detect usb mouse or keyboard at any time, after reading one of the last posts i turned off and unplugged for a few minutes, and then it worked again after i turned it on, hope it works for you! <#breadScrumb> <#newanswer> Answer +1 moins <#> plus <#> Report <#> Your Nick Sep 30, 2009 1:42pm BST If the problem suddenly occurred it may be associated with a Windows Update conflict. You can try booting to Safe Mode. If the keyboard and mouse work in Safe Mode then it's possible a Windows Update hosed USB drivers. In our company we've experienced this a lot with Dell's. Or short-term solution is to do a system restore to a previous point. The other solution was to get USB to PS2 plugs and switch the Keyboard and/or mouse to PS2. In some cases only the Keyboard needed to be plugged in via PS2 and the mouse would start working as USB. Strange, but true for us. Best of luck. <#breadScrumb> <#newanswer> Answer +1 moins <#> plus <#> Report <#> Jay Jan 27, 2010 10:56pm GMT Hey guys, I had the same problem. Sometimes the easiest answer is often overlooked. What I did was unplug everything from my computer after it was off (I mean all external connections, not inside the pc). After I unplug everything (even the power cord) I pressed the power button. After that I plugged the power cord back (only the power cord) and I pressed the power button, thus turning on the pc. That did the trick for me. I made sure the keyboard was working and then turned the pc off and plugged all of my components back. By unplugging the power cord and hitting the power button while the pc is off, you are essentially doing the same as if you were to take the battery out manually like suggested in the above steps. Please let me know if this helps as I have another method of fixing this.

<#breadScrumb> <#newanswer> Report <#> *compgenious* - Feb 12, 2010 10:23pm GMT Jay, simply unplugging the power cord and pressing the power button does not erase the CMOS information, it simply discharges all residual energy left within your psu. A full and proper CMOS clear process is as follows. Before you follow any of these below steps, please be sure to touch the EDGE of the case with the power cable plugged in, this will discharge any static build up that you have accumulated. Static build up and discharge are a computers worst enemy. Some one that does not do this could fry their Motherboard or other equally important components due to Static Discharge. 1. Turn off your computer, follow this by removing all attachments (keyboard, mouse, all the good ol cables back there.) 2. Open the side of your case, somewhere on the board everything sticks up from (The Motherboard) is a nickel sized silver battery, carefully remove this, as you can, if not careful, damage the parts that hold the battery in on some motherboards. It is usually in the lower left part of the motherboard, but I have seen it in some strange locations in my time, even directly underneath the memory slots. 3. With said battery still removed, and the power cable disconnected, press the power button anywhere from 5-7 times, this will ensure that all residual power in your power supply unit (PSU) is discharged, thus ensuring a completely cleared CMOS info. 4. Replace the CMOS battery into the battery holder, I find the easiest way is to put one side into the holder, and push the other side down till it clicks in place. THIS DOES NOT REQUIRE A GREAT AMOUNT OF FORCE. Do not push to hard, or you could damage your motherboard. 5. Plug the power cable back into the back of the computer, and power it up. At this point, you should get a BIOS error stating that time and date are not set, and to correct the issue, I then shut the computer off, and plug back in the mouse and keyboard. I always do this even if the mouse and keyboard is USB. This is especially important to do with PS/2 type mice and keyboards, as they are not "Hot Swappable" meaning that you could damage your ports if you plug one in while the power is on. They will also not be recognized by your O/S if they are plugged in while the power is on. Please be sure that the power is off. 6. Boot the system and enter system setup, on many computers now a-days this is accomplished by pressing F2 or F10 at BIOS Post screen. On an older computer you may have to press the DEL key on your keyboard. Set your time and date, remember, on any computer system the time is entered in a 24-hour format, To find what time it is in 24-hour format, add 12 to what time it is if it is afternoon. so for example if it is 1:45PM it would equate to 13:45 in 24 hour format (1:45 + 12 hours = 13:45) if it is not after noon, you do not do anything. Ex. 9:45AM = 09:45 24-hour format. 7. Once you have set your time and date, check other settings for compatibility, one thing you will want to make sure is enabled if you have old USB devices is Legacy USB support. If you have any other questons, feel free to ask. Report <#> *lissa* - Mar 21, 2010 10:20pm GMT

On HP media center runnining XP did as stated. I have a problem with power button sticking in but did manage to push in and out several times. Still boot to windows with mouse and keyboard freezing up. Light on mouse and number lock go on and off.. this did however allow me to get into safemode at bootup the second time and I went to last best config. No good though. Still have the problem. Mouse and Keyboard work in safe mode if I can get there but F8 tapping at startup doesn't do the trick as the keyboard already is not responding. I have removed the battery and waited and turned off the computer 2 times now with no sucess...Any other suggestions? 1 </forum/affich-50734-mouse-and-keyboard-failure> 2 </forum/affich-50734-mouse-and-keyboard-failure?page=2> Next</forum/affich-50734-mouse-and-keyboard-failure?page=2> <#breadScrumb> Ask your question </forum/hardware-2/new> This document entitled MOUSE AND KEYBOARD FAILURE <http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-50734-mouse-and-keyboard-failure> from Kioskea.net <http://en.kioskea.net> (en.kioskea.net <http://en.kioskea.net/>) is made available under the Creative Commons </ccmguide/ccmlicence.php3> license.
