Karan Johars My Name is Khan is a movie that depicts Rizwan Khan, an adult, with Aspergers Syndrome.

He immigrates from India after the death of his mother to live with his brother in California. He works as a sales professional for his brothers companys and marries a woman, Mandira, out of his religion. He lives happily with his step-son and wife in his new home.

Khan struggles with people accepting him with Aspergers Syndrome and understanding his unique personality. After 9/11 his step-son dies from a hate crime and his wife abandons him. His mission becomes to inform the American president and the Americans that he is a criminal because he is a Muslim, and his name is Khan.1 Rizwan Khan displays many characteristics thatrelate to Aspergers Syndrome. Communication: Khan is able to communicate his thoughts precisely. He can engage in meaningful conversations across different populations. However, he has to self-script his thoughts before he engages in a task involving interactions with multiple people. He often reherses the dialog he will say when he is selling the beauty products. He talks in a monotonic voice and he does not display facial expressions. He does not present body language when he is talking.

Social Emotional: Khan can relate to people of all ages. He has a love for humanity, as he goes out of his way, to help people in Wilhemina to repair their Hurricane struck town. He does show attention while he is listening, but he does make eye-contact. He does not understand peoples feelings toward him. He does not pay attention when his brother contests him marrying Mandira. He takes his wifes request to leave her and tell the American President My name is Khan, and I am not a terrorist seriously. On his journey to meet the American President, he meets a couple that offer him bread rolls and empties out their supply. Sometimes he invades peoples privacy when he is in conversation with them. The first time he approached Mandira, he told her about his information for her previous marriage. Mandira, feeling violated, did not want to continue the conversation with him. However, he mangaes to win her heart with his sincerity. Repetitive Behaviors: Khan likes to be very eloquent and have his thoughts heard. He will often repeat his thoughts before he conducts him. When his step-son was dying in the hospital from an eruptered spleen, he said, eruptered spleen, I have to look that up. He did not rest until he found the definition for the situation. During his journey to meet the American President he would often say, I need to meet the president. He resorts to echolalia from repeating definitions of terms and quoting lines from books that apply to his situations. He starts to exasperate when he sees the color yellow flashing in his eyes. He is also sensitive to sound and he wears ear plugs when he is on the trolley going to work. When he is nervous, he will often shake his head furiously and pace around until he finds an answer to his solution. Self-Help Skills: Khan is an expert at daily living skills. He performs simple functional living skills like, dressing, brushing teeth, combing hair, ironing clothes, shopping, etc. He has trouble putting on tries and wears bow ties. He relies on his wife for cooking food. He is an expert of repairing mechanical items and he does it to earn money on his journey. Similarly, when he does not have food, he often asks other people to give him food for a favor in exchange.

Associated Behaviors: Khan is a high functioning person with Aspergers Syndrome. His is financially independent and his brain works like a calculator. His is is able to make calculations without relying on instruments. When his wife opens her own salon, he is the accountant and helps her make business decisions. However, he presents a low self-esteem at times. He often blames himself for events out of his control like, his mothers and step-sons death. Part of his personality is formed from being with Apsergers Syndrome, which he does not understand jokes. He keeps asking Mandira to cut his hair without waiting for his turn. Mandira says, I am dying to cut your hair. He responds saying, Dont die, I just want you to cut my hair. He did not understand that Mandira was busy and was not paying attention to him because she was with another client. However, he became at ease when Mandira attended to him, and he slowly realized that he was wrong. Some evidence based learning strategies are used to help Khan become a productive individual in his society. First, he relies on role play to help him learn how to become a successful sale professional for selling his brothers beauty products. Mandira often interacts with him to show him how to present his products. He used to gather a crowd and advertise his products. He did not connect with his audience. Mandira showed him how to connect with the audience through showing the use of his products and trying the products himself. Second, he attends to visual images to help him learn directions on how to fix objects. He studies the images for the function of the object to fix them.

My Name is Khan is an informative movie to depict audiences about a man, Rizwan Khan, with Apsergers Syndrome. It shows how Rizwan Khan is enhanced with his Aspergers Syndrome to understand his difficulties and overcome them. This moves is a guide to inform audiences that the right tools and intervention provided for people with Aspergers Syndrome can enable peopel to become productive members of society. Parents watching this movie can understand that people with Aspergers Syndrome can maintain family relationships, and one day become parents. Parents with with children with Aspergers Syndrome often fear that their child will not be able to form family relationships. This movie is exceptional for teacher training because the prospective teachers will become aware of some of the characteristics of Aspergers Syndrome. It shows how an adult can function with Apsergers Syndrome. The movie is motivational because it shows how Khan with Autism overcomes his struggles to become an honored member of society. People can overcome and win their struggles if they put their efforts into it.
