    SNLPHILOSOPHY
    The Mayors Office of Gang Reduction and Youth Development (GRYD), launched the Summer Night Lights program in 2008 in eight(8)facilities(7parks,and1housingdevelopment)andprovidedfunfilled,positiveopportunitiesforouryoungpeoplelivingin themostcrimeriddencommunitiesthroughouttheCity,servingasapilotfornecessaryprogrammingincomingyears.In2009,SNL expanded its programming to (16) facilities (11 parks, 4 housing developments and 1 school site). In 2010, SNL expanded its program to 24 sites (20 parks, and 4 housing developments), and in 2011, SNL expanded its program to 32 sites (28 parks and 4 housingdevelopments. SNLisaviolencereductionstrategywhichprovidesextendedprogrammingbetweenthehoursof7p.m.tomidnight,4daysaweek (WednesdaySaturday),throughoutthesummermonths.SNLpartnersincludetheCitysDepartmentofRecreationandParks(RAP), theLosAngelesPoliceDepartment(LAPD),LosAngelesCityAttorneysOffice,theDepartmentofCulturalAffairs(DCA),TheHousing AuthorityofLosAngeles(HACLA),theLosAngelesUnifiedSchoolDistrict(LAUSD),LosAngelesConservationCorps(LACC),andthe HungryHogandStarvingSteer. ThepurposeofSNListocreatesafeenvironmentsduringthepeaktimesforgangrelatedviolenceandincommunitiesmostaffected byviolence.TheSNLprogramengagesallcommunitystakeholdersalongthefamilylifecycle(i.e.,infanttoelderlyresidents).The notionofcommunitystakeholdersincorporatesallmembersofthecommunityincludingthosewhomaybepotentialperpetratorsof violence,aswellasthosewhomaybepotentialvictimsofviolence.

    SUMMERNIGHTLIGHTSPROGRAMCOMPONENTS
    ExtendedHours&Programming

    Extendedprogrammingoccursfrom4thofJulyweekend throughLaborDayweekend,atthirtytworecreational facilitiesintheCityofLosAngelesthatextendtheirhours untilmidnight,fournightsaweek(WednesdaySaturday). Programmingincludesyouthandadultcenteredathletic, recreational,educationalandartisticactivities.

    YouthSquad Ten Youth Squad members are hired at each SNL site to staff theextendedhoursandprograms.TheYouthSquadmembers, ages 1720, are from the community and atrisk for gang involvement and engaging in gang violence. Youth Squad members receive stipends throughout the summer as well as job and life skills training that began two weeks prior to the kickoffofSNL,andcontinuesthroughouttheprogram.

    Intervention/CeaseFire Intervention Workers are hired from the community to engage in proactive peacemaking activities as well as violence interruption strategies throughout the SNL program.Interventionworkersalsoassistinreferringyouth totheSNLprogram,collaboratewithprogrampartners,and assist in the implementation of expanded programming targeting gang involved or exgang involved youth and adults.

    LawEnforcementandCommunityEngagement

    TheLosAngelesPoliceDepartment(LAPD)isanactivepartner in the SNL programming. Law enforcement presence at SNL sites consists of active participation and interaction with all community members in activities beyond suppression includingsports,provisionofcommunityresources,andLAPD programopportunitiesforyouthandresidents.
