17th CENTURY
Bertrand d'Orgeron attracted many colonists from Martinique and Guadeloupe. They and others were driven from their lands when more land was needed for the extension of the sugar plantations. From 1670 to 1690, a drop in the tobacco markets significantly reduced the number of settlers on the island. The first windmill for processing sugar was built in 1685.
INDEPENDENCE
It won its independence from France after a period of harsh colonial rule in the first successful slave rebellion, making Haiti the second independent country in North America. France recognized Haitian independence in 1825. 100,000 black people died and 24,000 white people died.
