This book, crafted and tested with MIT sophomores in electrical engineering and computer science over a period of more than six years, provides a comprehensive treatment of both circuit analysis and basic electronic circuits. Examples such as digital and analog circuit applications, field-effect transistors, and operational amplifiers provide the platform for modeling of active devices, including large-signal, small-signal (incremental), nonlinear and piecewise-linear models. The treatment of circuits with energy-storage elements in transient and sinusoidalsteady-state circunstances is thorough and accessible. Having taught from drafts of this book five times, I believe that it is an improvement over the traditional approach to circuits and electronics, in which the focus is on analog circuits alone.

My overall reaction to this book is overwhelmingly favorable. Well-written and pedagogically sound, the book provides a good balance between theory and practical application. I think that combining circuits and electronics is a very good idea. Most introductory circuit theory texts focus primarily on the analysis of lumped element networks without putting these networks into a practical electronics context. However, it is becoming more critical for our electrical and computer engineering students to understand and appreciate the common ground from which both fields originate. Several key issues were reported: Tolerance on S1E2 was set a bit too tight -- many solutions (including our own -- we printed more digits at the time these were tested) were marked wrong since we required many digits. This is now corrected. Several students reported (correctly) that our error messages are unclear. A dictionary: "Unknown error" -- this occurs if you submit non-numeric answers to numeric problems. This most commonly occurs if a comma is used instead of a decimal point, or units are included. "Syntax error" occurs when you type in a formula with an error. E.g. ((( "Undefined" means you used an invalid variable in your answer. E.g. if you used 'z' when taking the derivative of e^x (instead of just 'e' and 'x'). Some of the documentation refers to a "save" button. This was eliminated based on user tests prior to release, but we still had references to it in our documentation. Please use the check button instead, which both checks your answers and saves.

LYLA FISCHER: Hi. Welcome to 6002x. I am Lyla Fischer, the head teaching assistant for 6002x. As you know, this course is entirely online. So before we start learning about circuits, let's learn about the tools that you will use to navigate through the course material. Let's start with what is on your screen right now. You are watching a video of me talking. You have several tools associated with these videos. Some of them are standard video buttons, like the play-pause button on the bottom left. Like most video players, you can see how far you are into this particular video segments and how long the entire video segment is. Something that you might not be used to is the speed options. While you are going through the videos, you can speed up or slow down the video player with these buttons. Go ahead and try it now. Make me talk faster and slower. If you ever get frustrated by the pace of speech, you can adjust it this way. Another awesome feature is the transcript on the side. This will follow along with everything that I am saying as I'm saying it. So you can read along if you like. You can click on any of the words and notice that the video jumps to that word. The video slider at the bottom of the video will also let you navigate through the video quickly. Links to the relevant parts of the online textbook, as well as to clean and annotated lecture handouts, are provided at the bottom of the lecture sequence videos. Now that you know about the video player, I want to point out the sequence navigator. Right now, you are in the lecture sequence, which interweaves many videos and practice exercises. You can see how far you are in a particular sequence by observing which tab you are on. You can navigate directly to any video or exercise by clicking on the appropriate tab. You can also progress to the next element by pressing the arrow button or by clicking on the next tab. Try that now. The tutorial will continue in the next video. S0V2: Course Materials SPEAKER 1: Congratulations, now you know how to use one of the basic building blocks of the course. If you look to your left, you will see a table of contents for all of the aspects of the course. Right now, since you are playing this video, you are in administrivia, including these tutorials. Continuing to look to your left, if you click on the various week labels, you will see the course content that is associated with each week. You will not change content or interrupt a video until you actually click on a new course element to navigate to. There are generally two lecture sequences per week. We recommend that you start each week by working through those lecture sequences. The course content for each week also includes homework and an interactive lab. At the bottom of each week is an index of tutorials you can watch if you want. They are optional and will either provide more color to the lectures, show how to apply the theory of lectures to the real world, or how to apply the theory of lectures to example problems. You will be graded based on your performance on homework questions, online labs, and online exams. The next section will describe how to enter and check values or equations. so it is not graded. Feel free to experiment. Another fun part of the course is the online lab. We have an ungraded example lab 0 in the overview section where you can learn the lab tools more interactively. We also have a circuit sandbox area if you want to build and experiment with some circuits and see what happens. Professor Chris Terman will explain how to use the online lab in more detail in the lab introduction video. While the meat of the course is in this courseware section, we have some other resources for you to access in the header at the very top of the page. Currently, you are in the courseware section. The course info section has all of the handouts associated with the course, including the syllabus, lecture slides, and homework solutions once they're released. This is also where we will make course announcements, so try to check in relatively often. The textbook section has an online textbook for the course Links to the relevant part of the textbook are provided at the bottom of each lecture sequence video. If you look below, you will see an example link. The discussion section has a question and answer forum where you can ask questions and have them answered by the course staff or your fellow students. SPEAKER 2: The discussion forum is a great place to ask and answer questions about the course material or the site itself. If you need something from a lecture sequence clarified or don't know where to find something on the site, this is the place to ask. Before you ask any questions, make sure to search. A student may have already asked

the same thing. Let's search for questions about the wiki. Here's one that we can answer. You can see a preview of your response in this area. If your answer is upvoted or accepted, you get Karma points. Karma is a rough measure of the community trust you have learned in the discussion forum. If you have enough karma points, you can moderate the forum. You can read about the Karma system in more detail on the wiki. If it was a good question or a good answer, make sure to upvote it. This makes the question more likely to be seen and rewards the user who asked it. If you don't find your question after searching, you can ask your own question. You shouldn't ask questions that explicitly ask how to complete any graded portion of the course. But you can certainly ask for help understanding the concepts. Adding tags helps people find your question. Each courseware module has a title that you can use as a tag. This question is about sequence 4 exercise 2, so we will label it S4E2. The wiki is a collaborative space for students to share SPEAKER 2: This is a quick introduction to the wiki. The wiki is a collaborative space for students to share their knowledge of the course. All students are welcomed and encouraged to make edits. First we will create a new article. We create an article by clicking here and typing in the new article's name. The article title can only be set once, so be careful. To request an article's title to be changed later, please send an email. The page is styled with Markdown, which makes it easy to read and write. A few tips on Markdown are shown on the side. There's also an article which has more in-depth tips for styling Markdown. A cool feature of this wiki is that you can even insert circuits right on an article. Just choose a new name for the circuit and write circuit: and then the name. Let's save this page and see what we've got. We can edit and save the circuit directly on the article page. This will update all circuits with the same name across the whole wiki. That is why it's important to make up a new name for each circuit. Editing an article is easy. Simply click the Edit button on any page. Let's make a small change and save it. Every edit that you make is saved to the article's history, so it is never lost. You can always revert an article back to a previous reversion. The wiki is only as good as the content you put there, so please contribute. Also, be kind and don't spam. SPEAKER 1: Finally, you can see how you are doing in the course in the profile section. The profile section will also allow you to change your personal information. SPEAKER 2: The profile page let's you see your enrollment information. Over to the right, you can see your name, your user name, your email address, your location, and your language preference. You can update your location and language preference here. These are important so we know how to best tailor the site to you. If you need to change your password, click this button. It will send an email with a link to choose your new password. Now on to the main section. You can see your course progress in an interactive graph. This is what it will look like at the end of the term. It shows your progress on your homework assignments and labs, as well as the midterm and final. Hover over each bar to see more detail. Your lowest two homework assignments and labs are dropped. These red x's show which ones are dropped and won't be counted towards your grade. The breakdown of your final grade is shown here. You can see the contribution from each section, along with your final percentage. You could see the cut-off for grades too. If you reach the level for A, B, or C, you will receive a certificate. Nothing happens if you don't earn a grade, so don't stress too much. Below is a more detailed breakdown of your class progress. You can see your scores on each individual question. Practice scores don't count toward your final grade, problem scores do. If there's a section you haven't completed yet, you can click on this section title to jump straight to it in the courseware.
