Hassaan Saleem Academia Research 22 July 2011 There is no hope of doing perfect research (Griffith, 1998, p97) Oxford dictionary defines research as, the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts ad reach new conclusions. [1] We live in a dynamic world where quest for knowledge occupies a dominant position. Improvisation of the present inventions and discoveries, or dissatisfied nature of the humans force them into researching. Although research is vital and its results may appear promising, nevertheless their reliability or validity has always been questioned with the subjectivity involved and accuracy of the underlying facts and figures. The act of research is continuous which forms the basis of my research paper that there is no such thing as perfect research A substantial number of research works are carried out for a particular motive, be it financial or non-financial and are often undertaken for any derivable corporate benefit. They are financed and sponsored by organizations to undertake research on a particular subject, bringing financial benefits in the future for them. A brief analysis of some of the most proclaimed researches proposes that they had a limited scope defined by individuals or entities having a predefined set of motives. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle quotes "It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data." [2] The integrity and validity of any research is based on the accuracy and authenticity of the source data used. Research is a highly subjective act and an inaccurate choice of underlying facts and

figures can render the authenticity of it invalid. In my high school, our group was assigned to prepare a research paper on Why people smoke. In our task, we analyzed behavior of our high school colleagues and other relatives and investigated the causes which led them to smoke. After few months of completing the research, we realized that the scope of the research was limited. We were able to analyze only a handful of people and the knowledge gathered by us was limited to the volume of information available in the high school library. Thorstein Veblen quotes The outcome of any serious research can only be to make two questions grow where only one grew before. The basic reason for humans to do research is their curiosity. It makes them explore and find reasonable explanations or answers for the problems with proper justification. As a result, departure from the original objective in most of the research work is a frequent norm. Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton was trying to make a cure for headaches. It only took eight years of being sold in a drug store before the drink was popular enough to be sold in bottles and is today known as Coke. [3] In my undergraduate program, I chose the topic Test match cricket or T20 format Which one is better? for my research paper. The more I indulged myself in the research, the more I familiarized myself with the transition experienced in Cricket from Test matches to T20 cricket, which was spread over decades. I ended up submitting the paper titled Time line of Cricket from Test matches to T20 matches which talked about how the Test matches played by the English gentlemen was drastically changed into modern day T20 format. In this regard, it can be said that there is no hope in doing a perfect research. A study conducted today will be negated in the next study to be conducted in the near future. Had a research work been accepted as a perfect one, there would not have been any growth in many fields like science and education. 3D and 4D movies, huge sky scrapers, exploring the universe in a space shuttle and the treatment of lethal and dangerous diseases have all been possible to the fact

that research is an ongoing activity. According to Esther and Jerry Hicks, Once we reach our goals we experience yet more contrast which in turn spurs us to wanting and desiring and the creation of that which we desire. There is never an end to wanting. If there were, it would be the end to physical life.
