Sor Juana & The Chambered Nautilus -

Original Play (In English)

Performances in English Thu, Mar 8 @ 8PM Fri, Mar 9 @ 8PM Sat, Mar 10 @ 8PM Sun, Mar 11 @ 3PM The 60-minute multimedia play focuses on the life of 17th Century Mexican nun, Sor Juana Ins de la Cruz. Sor Juana is widely known in Latin America and in Spain. Her fame stems from her voracious drive for knowledge and her exceptional genius as a writer. From her silent solitary cell, this free-thinking nun conducted scientific experiments, wrote hundreds of poems, plays, as well as theological essays. She was frequently attacked and chose to defend not only her own interest in worldly learning, but also the broad rights of women to education and a life of the mind. Last year, ngeles Romero starred in the "The Brow: The Life and Times of Frida" which was a SOLD OUT performance. ngeles Romero is one of Houston's Top actresses, we expect that the same will be for Sor Juana's show! Get your tickets today! For more information on the play, actress and director go to http://www.talentobilingue.org/Culture/sor-juana. In Celebration of International Women's Day! Appropriate for Adult Audiences In addition to the fabulous performance, various electronic visual elements and activities will be going on throughout the weekend. ON VIEW: Works by 2012 Sucesos Magazine's "Woman of the Year" Lorena Alvarez, a master Shipbuilder and restoration expert at the Houston Maritime Museum, will be on view. Including artifacts from the 16th Century (the time of Sor

Juana) and Spanish ship models to give a feel to the period in which Sor Juana's life was held in context. Bio: Lorena Alvarez After spontaneously starting to shape chalk as a child, Lorena was introduced to wood carving as a young teenager. She later started a career in antique restorations and has since become an expert at working with plastics, metals, and paints as well. After meeting James Manzolillo, the founder of the Houston Maritime Museum (HMM), she started working on model ships for the museum. The rest, as they say, is history. She currently serves as resident modeler at the Houston Maritime Museum.
