AU- 601: DESIGN OF AUTOMOBILE COMPONENTS- II Periods/week Credits Max. Marks : 150 L: 3 T: 1 3.5 Internal : 50 Duration of Ext. Exam: 3 Hrs External : 100 Objective : At the end of the course the students should be able to design the various components of the automobile taking into account the various properties of the material and the point of application. Part-A Unit 1: Introduction : Variable Loading: Different type of fluctuating/ variable stresses, fatigue strength considering stress concentration, factor, surface factor, size factor, reliability factor etc., Fatigue design for finite and infinite life against combined variable stresses using Goodman and Soderbergs Criterion, Fatigue design using Miners equation. Unit 2: Shafts: Detailed design of shafts for static and dynamic loading, Rigidity and deflection consideration. Springs Type of Springs, Design for helical springs against tension and their uses, compression and fluctuating loads, design of leaf springs, Surging phenomenon in springs, Design Problem. Unit 3: Bearings: Selection of ball and roller bearing based on static and dynamic load carrying capacity using load life relationship, Selection of Bearings from manufacturers catalogue, type of lubrication Boundary, mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication, Design of journal bearings using Raimondi and Boyds Charts. Design of pivot and collar bearing. Lubricants and their properties, Selection of suitable lubricants, Design. Part-B Unit 4: Spur & Helical Gears : Force analysis, Selection of material for gears, Beam & wear strength of gear tooth, Form or Lewis factor for gear tooth, Dynamic load on gear teeth-Barth equation and Buckingham equation and their comparison, Gear Lubrication. Unit 5: Design of Cylinder & Piston: Choice of material for cylinder and piston, piston friction, piston slap, design of cylinder, piston, piston pin, piston rings, piston failures, lubrication of piston assembly. Unit 6: Design of Connecting Rod, Crankshaft: Material for connecting rod, determining minimum length of connecting rod, small end and big end design, shank design, design of big end cap bolts, connecting rod failures, material for crankshaft, design of crankshaft under bending and twisting, balancing weight calculations. Design of Valves and Flywheel Design aspects of intake and exhaust manifolds, inlet and exhaust valves, valves springs, tappets, valve train. Materials and design of flywheel. Text Books:

Part-A Objective To make the students to realize the impact of automobile emissions on the environment and expose student to factors affecting the formation and control of automobile pollutants. Unit 1: Introduction: Introduction to air pollutants, vehicle population assessment in metropolitan cities and contribution to pollution, effects on human health and environment, global warming, type of emission, transient operational effects on pollution. Unit 2: Pollutant Formation in SI Engines: Pollutant formation in SI Engines, mechanism of HC and CO formation in four stroke and two stroke SI engines, NOx formation in SI engines, effects of design and operating variables on emission formation, control of evaporative emission. Two stroke engine pollution. Unit 3: Emission: Types of Hydro Carbon emission - poly nuclear aromatic Hydro Carbon, Aldihydes and ice- tones, classification of soft & hard methane. Part-B Unit 4: Pollutant Formation in CI Engines: Pollutant formation in CI engines, smoke and particulate emissions in CI engines, effects of design and operating variables on CI engine emissions. NOx formation and control. Noise pollution from automobiles, measurement and standards. Unit 5: Control of Emissions from SI and CI Engines: Design of engine, optimum selection of operating variables for control of emissions, EGR, Thermal reactors, secondary air injection, catalytic converters, catalysts, fuel modifications fuel cells, Two stroke engine pollution control, blow by & evaporative emission & their control. Unit 6: Measurement Techniques Emission Standards and Test Procedure: NDIR, FID, Chemiluminescent analyzers, Gas Chromatograph, smoke meters, emission standards, driving cycles USA, Japan, Euro and India. Test Procedures ECE, FTP Tests, SHED Test Chassis Dynamometers, dilution tunnels.
