IMPLICATIONS OF THE LINGUISTIC EXPRESSIONS OF TUGUEGARAO TRICYCLE DRIVERS

I.Introduction It was already 7:45 pm when we are being dismissed from our last class. On our way going out of the gate of the school campus, here comes the tricycle drivers who seems to be competing with each other on getting passengers. One tricycle driver approached me and said, Neng tricy , he asked. Opo kuya, sa may Ugac Norte po, I answered. Ikaw lang ba neng, he added. Opo, I replied to him. Before I entered inside the tricycle, he told me this way, Neng, doble a lang ah he said. I was shocked at that time and I replied to him, kuya wag na lang den po, bababa na po ako. I went out the tricycle and preferred to look for another tricycle. This is a common scenario in Tuguegarao City. Almost everyone who comes to Tuguegarao experiences such behavior of the tricycle drivers. They have so many linguistic expressions with their passengers such as capacity, double pay, magdagdag ka na lang, magkano bigay mo and etc. These linguistic expressions of Tuguegarao tricycle drivers greatly affect their relationship with the passengers, their image as drivers as well as the image of the city. This research paper, aims to determine the possible implications or effects of the linguistic expressions. Specifically, it attempts to collect all linguistic expressions used by

the tricycle drivers of Tuguegarao City. Additionally, it seeks to discover the reasons of the drivers for doing such as well as to gather the perception of passengers towards the said issue. This research paper thereby serves as a baseline data for tricycle drivers association to revise their guidelines regarding driver-passenger relationship. The results will also enlighten the passengers and drivers alike on the effects. II. Body Filipino values are for the most centered at maintaining social harmony, motivated primarily by the desire to be accepted within a group. The main sanction against diverging from these values are the core of hiya roughly translated as a sense of shame, and amor propio or self esteem. Social approval, acceptance by a group and belonging to a group are major concerns. Caring about what others will think, say or do are strong influences on social behaviors of Filipinos. (Agapay, 1991) According to the anthropologist Leonardo Mercado (1974), the Filipino worldview is basically nondualistic. Basing on linguistic analyses of the Filipino value terms like loob ( Cebuano buot ), he concludes that Filipinos desire harmony, not only interpersonal relationships, but also with nature and religion, while still remaining nondichotomous. Florentino Timbreza, a cultural philosopher, concludes in his book pilosopiyang Pilipino (1982) that Filipino values are based on the significance of the world to man. F. Landa Jocano identified two models of the Filipino value system. The first exogenous model or the foreign model, while the second is the indigenous model or the traditional model. The foreign model is described to be a legal and formal model, while

the indigenous model is described as a traditional and non formal model or guide but it is deeply embedded in the subconscious of the Filipinos. The foreign model was inherited by Filipinos from western cultures, particularly from the Spaniards and the Americans. Based on studies, surveys, opinions, anecdotes and other literatures made by experts and researchers in relation to Filipino social values or Filipino core values, along with the Filipino character or Filipino identity of a person or an individual known as the Filipino. The Filipino value systems are found to posses inherent key element. Among them are optimism about the future, pessimism with regards to present situations and events, the concern and care for other people, the existence of friendship and friendliness, the habit of being hospitable, religious nature, respectfulness to self and other, respect for the female members in the society, the fear to God, and abhorrence acts of cheating and thievery. The core values of Filipino specifically uphold the following items: solidarity of the family unit, security of the Philippine economy, orientation to small groups, personalism, the concepts of loob or kalooban ( meaning, whats inside the self or inner- self or the actual personal feelings of the self) existence and maintenance of smooth interpersonal relationships and the sensing of the feelings or needs of others ( known as pakikiramdam). (Gorospe , 1988) When we were young students we often heard the so- called Filipino traits such as bahala na, pakikisama, ningas cogon, hiya, etc. maybe our very own elementary teachers then pointed it to us that these traits were the culprits, the scapegoat of the Filipino failures or basically the weak characteristics of being Filipinos.

Filipinos are indeed known for their values. But to compare it with the characteristics of people today, there is a big difference. Specifically, here in the place of Tuguegarao City, we encounter many undesirable attitudes and behaviors of the people. Most of the complaint are pertaining to the behaviors of the tricycle drivers of Tuguegarao, especially with their linguistic expressions. These linguistic expressions resulted severe conflicts between them and their passengers. Nowadays, tricycle drivers are usually uttering so many linguistic expressions which greatly affect their relationship with their passengers. Their behavior has brought disappointment to the eyes of others. With all their expressions such as capacity, double pay, magdagdag ka na lang, magkano ibigay mo? and etc., people are now pushed to think of an idea against the image of the tricycle drivers. They begin to hate them. Most would say, they are so hungry of money or what they usually term as money face. Some would also conclude that these tricycle drivers are very in need of money for their living. Thats why, they are doing those manners. Others would also say, maybe because of the continues price hike of oil which usually followed also with an increase with the price of all prime commodities, thats why they really need to earn more. On the other hand, negative feedbacks are commonly expected from the people especially to the passengers for they are really affected. They would think that they are being abuse by these tricycle drivers in view of the fact that drivers usually ask them for additional payment for their fares. These tricycle drivers are used already with their misbehaviors without considering the reality

that it appears as disrespect to their passengers and eventually results to a conflict between them. Linguistic expressions of tricycle drivers of Tuguegarao dont only affect their image as drivers, their relationship with their passengers but also to the image of the city as well. Image of the city is consequently affected for the reason that people would generally describe the place as home of tricycle drivers who are abusing. This could result to misinterpretations, negative nations and will lead to a serious destruction of the image of the city. It will be spread out to other places and will destroy the reputation of the drivers and most seriously, image of Tuguegarao is greatly affected. This problem is indeed very alarming. Even though these expressions are just simple for them, in general, it is a serious problem. It can damage many aspects and really requires to be solved. Every problem has a solution. And the problem on the linguistic expressions of Tuguegarao Tricycle drivers may be curb. In the first place, we all know that tricycle fares are being fixed by the city government and the fare rate is usually only nine pesos (P 9.00) per passengers for adults. While students, senior citizens and person with disabilities the tricycle fare was only eight pesos (P 8.00) per passengers.

The standard fare rate in Tuguegarao is nine pesos (P9.00) for standard delivery in the city proper, from its starting point to any destination in the city proper or nearby barangays. Then, additional one peso for every 3 kilometers. This regular fare rate apply when the tricycle driver, may pick up other passengers all-througout the trip. However,if

you hire the tricycle exclusively and the driver will bring you directly to any destination you want, you have to pay the driver double the price of one fare, or special delivery or capacity. Usually, you pay nine pesos for any ride inside the town center. However, there are fix rate per destination in the barangays of Tuguegarao city and nearby municipalities.

In cases that you have some baggage with you and you are in a hurry and want to delivered immediately to your desired final destination or to any nearby street or barrio or town, you may pay the tricycle driver for special delivery or tricycle fare costs php 50,100,150 to 200 per delivery or sometimes youll pay the tricycle driver for their capacity rate. Tuguegarao tricycle has a maximum capacity of 5 persons per tricycle excluding the tricycle driver. The tricycle is overloaded if there are 7-20 persons on it.

In instances that you pay for Capacity Rate, you will multiply the regular fare rate times five.

Example

Tricycle Capacity Rate Cost = P 9.00 (regular fare rate) x 5 php

Tricycle capacity rate cost = 45

If everyone of us is aware of this, no one would be abused. If we wanted to be treated fairly, we should also learn to know and be aware of everything.

If ever a tricycle driver would violate the standard fare rate, we have the right to complain and report them to the proper authority. Tell to them that they are already making a violation.

Another thing is that if ever they would tell us to pay an additional fare and you believed it doesnt really fit with the distance of the place or destination, dont ever allow them. If we pay whatever they ask, it might be the reason why they continue on doing it. Sometimes, the mistake is with us also. We should learn to be realistic. Dont let our pride cover selves. We are pushing them more to continue with their behavior if will not be awaken of the reality.

In addition, if the place or destination passengers plan to go is quiet so near or can be a walking distance only, why dont we sacrifice to walk instead of riding in the tricycle. With this, we will lessen the arguments and even help us to save something. We should be sensitive in everything we do because, sometimes, we dont only feel that we are also the ones making our own problem. In order for us to have a better relationship with each other, we must learn to be true to ourselves.

III. Conclusion Linguistic expressions of Tuguegarao tricycle drivers are really alarming now. It is not just merely talking about the expressions but seriously, concerns with the effects of these expressions. If this continues, relationship among people will be ruined especially between drivers and passengers, the image of the tricycle drivers will become evil to the

eyes of majority. And most of all, whole community will be affected specifically the image of the city. This problem must be acted immediately. In order for us to stop this problem particularly on the behavior of Tuguegarao tricycle drivers, we must learn to be aware of everything and not to be trapped by our ignorance. The solution will really come from each of us. As an adage says, No one would be abuse if and only if everyone is aware of everything.
