What is accident investigation?

C3 For the given scenario complete the accident investigation form

Watch the presentation. This is a representation of a severe workshop incident. The object of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 is to promote the prevention of harm to all people at work, and others in, or in the vicinity of, places of work.

The Act applies to all New Zealand workplaces and places duties on employers, the self-employed, employees, principals and others who are in a position to manage or control hazards. The emphasis of the law is on the systematic management of health and safety at work. It requires employers and others to maintain safe working environments, and implement sound practice. It recognises that successful health and safety management is best achieved through good faith cooperation in the place of work and, in particular, through the input of those doing the work.

Go to http://www.osh.dol.govt.nz/order/catalogue/forms.shtml and accurately complete the form. The form that you require is for accident accident investigation.

Hazard identification sheets

Automotive technicians deal with a variety of substances every day. Some of these substances are hazardous. Therefor it is important that should an accident involving a substance the correct treatment can be given. This is where the Material Data Sheet helps. A material safety data sheet (MSDS) is a form with data regarding the properties of a particular substance. An important component of product stewardship and workplace safety, it is intended to provide workers and emergency personnel with procedures for handling or working with that substance in a safe manner, and includes information such as physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point, etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment, and spill-handling procedures. MSDS formats can vary from source to source within a country depending on national requirements.

C5 For the given constraints plan a workshop

C6 Calculate the outlay and profit made from an oil service promotion.

Workshop Management

You run a good sized workshop whos major business is service.

Over the three months you have run a promotion discounting engine lubrication system service. This promotion offers the filter for free with any oil change.

You purchase oil at bulk trade rate. 0W/40 Synthetic = $20 per litre. 5W/30 Semi Synthetic (diesel) = $15 per litre 10W/30 Semi Synthetic = $12 per litre 5W/30 Semi Synthetic = $11.50 per litre 15W40 Mineral = $5 per litre

Oil is stored in 25 litre drums. What is the cost of one drum for each oil grade? You have purchased 6 drums of 0W/40 10 drums of 5W/30 diesel 20 drums of 10W/30 20 drums of 5W/30 25 drums of 15W/40 1 What is the total cost of all the oil purchased? 2 What is the average cost of all the oil per litre?

The prices of each oil service is fixed. 0W/40 is set at $135 5W/30 diesel $140 10W/30 $110 5W/30 $100 15W/40 $80

3 The average vehicle uses 4.5 litres of oil. How many services can be performed with the quantity of oil purchased? 0W/40 5W/30 diesel 10W/30 5W/30 15W/40

4. Now that we know the price of the oil, have an indication of the overall number of services we can achieve. We can now calculate how much money has been made for: 0W/40 5W/30 diesel 10W/30 5W/30 15W/40

5: Now work the difference between cost of purchasing the oil and the money made selling, this is your profit. So: 0W/40 5W/30 diesel 10W/30 5W/30 15W/40

You can choose to present data simply as a series of calculations or you can use a spreadsheet and present data in graphs. The decision is yours. Wait there is more, the filters cost you $1000. 6 Take that number from your overall profit.

Labour rate averages $5 per service. We know the number of services completed so now we can 7: subtract the cost of labour from our profit Of course there are other considerations such as equipment depreciation, rates, business tax and any rental rates which may apply.

C9
From 10 March to 7 April weekly blog your experiences at UNITEC and work placement

C10
Discuss the impact of the vehicle industry on the environment and create a workshop action plan identifying ways to protect the environment

B1
Following on from the accident investigation form accurately complete the serious harm form.
Go to http://www.osh.dol.govt.nz/order/catalogue/forms.shtml and accurately complete the form. The form that you require is Form of register or notification of circumstances of accident or serious harm.

B2
Create a safety data sheet instructing how to safely lift and secure a vehicle using ramp and jack with axle stands. You have already completed C7 Record and reflect on practical activities. Now you can revisit safe jacking and securing a vehicle, this time use video or still photos to record your practical activity and create either a instructional video, an instructional data sheet or even a comic style information sheet. The choice is yours. Remember you are instructing not telling what you have done!

B3
Relating to C5 create an itemised list detailing cost and equipment needed for the workshop. Think very carefully of the equipment that is required to set up your shop (minimum 40 items). You may assume for this exercise that the ramps and other stationary eqiupment is already installed and paid for. Make sure that you cost your equipment and provide a final grand total.
Item First Aid Kit Fire Extinguisher Quantity required 1 2 Cost $61.00 $192.00

A1
Explain the legislation associated with section 25 H&S Employment Act 1992. Now we are summarizing. You are required to look at the act and create a presentation aimed at garage apprentices highlighting the main aspects with focus on roles and responsibilities of the employer and employee.

A2
Identify and synthesise legislation associated with the storage of flammable chemicals within the workplace. Lets work smart. Consider building this into your presentation. In vehicle repair we handle dangerous, flammable materials on a daily basis. In this case familiarity defiantly does breed contempt and thats when accidents happen. Your presentation can be included within this learning pack or completely separate. One final note. You shall present to a number of your peers.
