Classes of Membership The Institution of Engineers (India), IEI consists of memb ership in the following orders: Honorary, Corporate and Non-Corporate. The Honora ry Members comprises the Classes of Honorary Fellows and Honorary Life Fellows. Please refer to page 13 to 18, clause no 44 56 of Bye-Laws and Regulations. top Abridged Eligibility Guidelines for the Corporate Membership: Qualifications Qualifications accredited by the Institution and included in the rules and syllab

i shall be accepted for various classes of Membership. Other qualifications may b e accepted in consultation with the Equivalence Committee. In case of persons hav ing passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations, period of experienc e shall be reckoned from the date of passing Section A Examination subject to a maximum one year prior to the passing of Section B Examination. Employment Position of responsibility in the profession of engineering may, in general, be ta ken to start from the post of Assistant Engineer (Junior Engineer for States whe re it is the initial appointment in some parts of the country) in Government Dep artments; Second Lieutenant in the Army, or equivalent position in the Navy and the Air Force; Assistant Lecturer in Engineering Colleges; Lecturer in Polytechn ics; and equivalent posts in other organizations. Post-qualification experience o f 10 years in such post shall be considered for Membership (MIE) and 5 years for Associate Membership (AMIE). In case of engineers holding relatively lower position of responsibility like Sub -Engineer, Supervisor, Overseer, etc, experience of 12 years in such post shall be considered for Membership (MIE). Position of High Responsibility (Bye-law 46 (ii)) may, in general, be taken to sta rt from the post of Superintending Engineer in Government Departments; Lieutenan t Colonel in the Army or equivalent position in the Navy and the Air Force; Prof essor in Engineering Colleges; Associate Professor in the Universities / IITs; P rincipal in Polytechnics, and equivalent posts in other organizations. Post-qual ification experience of 15 years in such post shall be considered for Fellowship (FIE). In case the applicant holds the post of Executive Engineer / Reader / Assistant Professor or equivalent without a postgraduate qualification in engineering for a minimumperiod of 8 years with total experience of 20 years, he/she shall be co nsidered for Fellowship (FIE). In case the applicant holds the post of Executive Engineer / Reader / Assistant Professor or equivalent with postgraduate qualification in engineering for a min imum period of 6 years with total experience of 18 years,he/she hall be consider ed for Fellowship (FIE). In case the applicant holds the post of Executive Engineer / Reader / Assistant Professor or equivalent with PhD qualification in engineering for a minimum peri od of 4 years with total experience of 16 years, he/she shall be considered for Fellowship (FIE). In case of self-employed persons / Consultants where the designation does not co nvey the status of responsibility, the period of experience for consideration of their applications for various classes of Corporate Membership shall be 5 years for Associate Membership; 12 years for Membership and 20 years for Fellowship. However, each and individual case shall be considered on merit by the Membership Committee. In case of private industries / organizations, the level of designation shall be ascertained with respect to the hierarchy in their respective industry / organi zation. top Privileges of Corporate Members : A Corporate Member receives a Letter of election. All the priveleges given to him are stated in this letter. top How to become a member Application forms for Corporate Membership FIE/MIE/AMIE and Associate AIE are av ailable at IEI State and Local Centre. Forms can also be downloaded from the web

site. Hard copy of the application form must be sent to the Headquarters duly fi lled in along with two passport /stamp size photographs. The application form mu st be signed by the supporter(s), who is a member of the IEI in the Category of FIE/MIE/AMIE, quoting the valid membership number. All the copies of documents a ccompanying the membership form must be attested by one of the supporters who ha s signed the membership form. Remittance should be made by Demand Draft (DD) in favour of The Institution of Engineers (India) , payable at Kolkata. The same proced ure is to be followed as stated above for sending the hard copy of the applicati on form. top Application forms for Non-Corporate Membership Membership application form for Senior Technician (ST) and Technician (T) is ava ilable with the prospectus. The prospectus is available in all State/Local Centr e of IEI and also available at the Headquarters of IEI. The price of prospectus is Rs. 375/-. Apply for prospectus with a demand draft of Rs. 375/- in favour of The Institution of Engineers (India) , payable at Kolkata, at headquarters address ed to the Director (Finance), The Institution of Engineers (India), 8 Gokhale Ro ad, Kolkata 700020 or procure the same from any State/Local Centre of IEI. The processing of application for en rollment as corporate member normally takes two months time and that of non corp orate ST/T members takes three months time at present from the date of acknowled gement. top Important Points to Remember * Please do not forget to attest all the documents i.e. copy of date of birth pro of, marksheets, certificates, employers' certificate mentioning present designat ion and date of holding the post (for corporate membership),chronological engine ering career (for corporate membership) etc by the supporters or one of the supp orter who has signed the membership application form.  Existing members are eligible to upgrade or transfer to their higher grade of me mbership provided they are satisfying the eligibility criteria as laid down in t he Bye-Laws and Regulations of the Council of IEI.
