Marks :100 Answer Any Five Questions All Questions Carry Equal Marks --1.a) b) Explain the terms principal stresses and principal planes. Derive expressions for principal stresses, principal planes and max shear stress if there are like direct stresses accompanied by a state of simple shear. [8+12] Graphically represent maximum shear strain energy theory. The three principal stresses at a point in an elastic material are 1.5 P (tensile), P (tensile) and 0.5 P (compressive). If the elastic limit in tension is 190 Mpa, determine the value of P according to the maximum shear strain energy theory. [8+12] Calculate the ratio of the torques transmitted by the hollow and the solid circular shafts of the same material, length and weight. Calculate the ratio of the weights of the hollow and the solid circular shafts of the same material and length and transmitting the same torque. Assume that both the shafts are subjected to the same maximum allowable shear stress. [10+10] A closely coiled helical spring is made of 20mm dia. wire coiled to a mean dia. of 200mm, the number of turns being 15. If a load of 5 kN is applied, find the deflection of the spring. Find also the energy stored in the spring. [20] A short hollow cylindrical column having an outside dia of 300mm and inside dia of 200mm was cast in a factor. On inspection it was found that the Bore is eccentric in such a way that the thickness varies from 30mm at one end to 70mm at the other. Calculate the extreme stress intensities if it carries a load of 800kN along the axis of bore. Sketch the stress distribution. [20] Derive an expression for the distribution of shear stress across the cross section. How is average shear stress defined. Relate maximum shear stress to the average shear stress in a rectangular section. [20] A C.I pipe of 200mm internal dia. and thickness of metal 50mm carries water under a pressure of 7 N/mm2. Find the maximum and minimum intensities of hoop stress; sketch the Variation of hoop stress and radial pressure across the section. [20]

Show that the resultant max deflection in a beam under unsymmetrical bending occurs in a direction perpendicular to the neutral axis for any given direction of loading. Hence derive the expression for max deflection in a simple- supported beam Subjected to u.d.l. under unsymmetrical bending. [10+10] --o0o--
