Name of Lesson: Services Provided by Each Level of of Government

Grade Level: 6 Subject: Social Studies Prepared by: Angela Rutschke Overview and Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is help students identify and explain the different services and responsibilities of the the three levels of government in Canada. Educational Standards: Alberta Program of Studies Grade 6 Social Studies 6.1.5 Analyze the structure and functions of Albertas provincial government by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions and issues: What are the responsibilities of the provincial government (i.e. laws, taxes, services)?

6.1.4 Analyze the structure and functions of local governments in Alberta by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions and issues: What are the responsibilities of local governments (i.e., bylaws, taxes, services)? 6.S.5 Demonstrate skills of cooperation, conflict resolution and consensus building: Work collaboratively with others to achieve a common goal 6.S.8 Demonstrate skills of oral, written and visual literacy: Communicate effectively through appropriate forms, such as speeches, reports and multimedia presentations, applying information technologies that serve particular audiences and purposes

6.S.9 Develop skills of media literacy: Use selected presentation tools to demonstrate connections among various pieces of information Objectives: Students will be able to: (Remembering Level) List five or more services that each level of government provides. (Creating Level) Design a presentation using Stories to Learn to illustrate the responsibilities of their specific level of government. (Evaluating Level) Compare the three levels of government and their responsibilities (Evaluating Level) Collaborate in a group to create a project that explains what services their specific level of government provides. (Evaluating Level) Reflect upon their understanding of the responsibilities and services provided by the levels of government as well as how effectively they contributed to the collaborative project.

Materials Needed: i-Pad (one for each group) (6) i-Pad app "Stories to Learn" loaded on each i-Pad

Taking Part in Our Democracy textbooks class notes (one for each student) jot note template (one for each student) computer room access quiz(one for each student) pencils student blogs found at www.mrsrutschke.weebly.com

Verification: Steps to check for student understanding

1. Teacher will monitor the students throughout the project to ensure understanding of
concepts, collaboration, proper use of resources, appropriate project design as well as troubleshooting problems that may arise from using technology. 2. Evaluation of projects against a rubric, will assess students' understanding of the services, group work skills, skills of oral, written and visual literacy and also skills of media literacy. 3. Quiz at the end of the presentations will be used to evaluate understanding of the services and responsibilities of each level of government. 4. Jot note pages will be handed in to evaluate understanding of how to take notes from sources.

Activity: Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson 1. Students will be broken into groups of three (3). 2. A specific level of government will be assigned to each group. There will be two(2) groups for each level of government.

3. Students will individually read the information from the text for their specific level of government, making jot notes on the services and responsibilities for that level of government on their jot note template sheet. Each student is to have their own jot note sheet. 4. Students will then go to the computer room and access the web page(s) designated for their group. The group works together to get the information from the websites, but each student will fill out their jot note template sheet. 5. Teacher demonstration of how to use "Stories to Learn" will occur after students have completed research for their projects. 6. Students begin planning their presentation of the government services of their level of government. They need take pictures using their i-Pads, that represent each of the services they want to present. These pictures may be reenactments, physical representations, or some other type of representation that depicts the service they are depicting. 7. Students need to record their voice explanations of each service as well as type in their information, as per the rubric. They need to have a minimum of five(5) services represented in their presentation. 8. Students will view each others' presentations, taking notes on their own jot note template pages. 9. Peer and self evaluations of group work will be completed. 10. Students will take quiz at the end of all the presentations, to check for understanding. 11. A blog entry of 5-10 sentences will be completed by each student reflecting on what they learned from this assignment. Notes *Stories to Learn is an app that is most commonly used to create social stories for students with special needs. The program is simple to use and allows the stories to be presented through images, voice recording and text.
