g = 10 Nkg-1
(01)

(a)

State the law of conservation of linear momentum.

(b)

Show that the kinetic energy EK of an object of mass m is related to its momentum p by the expression
EK = P2 / 2m

(b)

Two particles A and B have masses of 3 kg and 2 kg respectively. They are moving along a
straight horizontal line towards each other. Each particle is moving with a speed of 4 m s1
when they collide.
A

(02)

(i)

If the particles coalesce during the collision to form a single particle, find the speed
of the combined particle after the collision.

(ii)

If, after the collision, A moves in the same direction as before the collision with
speed 0.4 m s1 , find the speed of B after the collision.

A particle is attached to one end of a light inextensible string. The other end of the string is
attached to a fixed point O. The particle is set into motion, so that it describes a horizontal
circle whose centre is vertically below O. The angle between the string and the vertical is ,
as shown in the diagram.
O

0.2 m

(a)

The particle completes 40 revolutions every minute. Show that the angular speed of the particle is 4/3
radians per second.

(b)

The radius of the circle is 0.2 metres. Find, in terms of , the magnitude of the acceleration of the particle.

(c)

The mass of the particle is m kg and the tension in the string is T newtons.
(i)

Draw a diagram showing the forces acting on the particle.

(ii)

Explain why T cos = mg .

(iii)

Find the value of , giving your answer to the nearest degree.
