MARINEDRAINS-pRODUCTRANGE
5
Introduction
BLCHER manufactures an extensive range of deck drains, suitable
for light to medium duty traffc, which combine advanced design,
high quality and ease of installation all at extremely competitive
prices.
The BLCHER

Marine drain range has been developed on the

basis of a "modular" principle. This means that by employing one
of fve standard lower parts, connecting this to an upper part to
suit a tiled, wood covered, resin, vinyl or painted steel deck and
completing the installation with a removable water trap, almost
any deck drainage solution is achievable.
In addition to our extensive standard program, special and
customized articles are also available on request.
Application
BLCHER

Marine drains are used for the drainage of deck areas

and/or discharge appliances in:
Showers
Wet cabins
Toilets
Galleys, pantries
Deck areas
Workshop areas
Being of high quality fnish, BLCHER

Marine drains are often used

where an aesthetically pleasing appearance is important.
Finish
BLCHER

Marine drains are chemically descaled (acid pickled) in

order to enhance the natural corrosion resistance and provide a
uniform matt silver fnish. Gratings are made of polished stainless
steel.
Please note! A protective plastic cover and/or flm is provided
on most gratings and should remain in place until installation is
complete.
All lower parts have welding covers for protection until installation
work has been fnally completed.
Explanationoftypenumbers
All BLCHER

Marine drains have triple three digit type numbers.

The frst two numbers refer to the product type, the third is
dimensional reference and the suffx "S" specifes grade AISI
36 L.
The BLCHER

Marine drains are also available in stainless steel

grade AISI 304 as an option. If AISI 304 is required, specify the
type number without suffx S.

TYpEOFMATERIAL/AppLICATIONS
Stainless steel is a clean, durable, corrosion resistant material
with a design life expectancy of over ffty years.
The BLCHER sanitary discharge system comes in 2 stainless steel
grades, AISI 36 L and AISI 304. The 304 grade might be used,
but BLCHER normally recommends the use of AISI 36 L because
the risk of corrosion, caused by an aggressive environment, is
signifcantly reduced or eliminated entirely by choosing the
molybdenum stainless steel type AISI 36 L.

verticalpiping
One fxing point per deck is normally suffcient, but the gap
between each mounting should not exceed 3 m. Where larger
inlets are connected, the downpipe must be secured immediately
below the inlet.

Horizontalpiping
* The distance between the suspended fxing points must be
calculated on the basis of a permissible mm bending of the
pipe. The defection for a single mounting is calculated for a
water-flled pipe.
) Applies to fat lengths of pipe. Where there are fttings in the
suspended piping, the mounting points must be so placed that
either the branch or the through pipe is held directly behind
the sleeve. If this is not possible, the span must be reduced
to half the quoted values or, as an alternative, safety clamps
may be installed for stability.
Horizontalpiperunsarealwaystobeinstalledwithagra-
dient. If no self-cleansing calculation is available, a gradient of
20 is recommended in gravity systems. Horizontal pipe runs
in vacuum systems are to be installed in accordance with the
recommendations of the vacuum system supplier.

Expansion
Both horizontal (suspended or ground) pipes and vertical runs
must be mounted or fxed so that the force arising through heat
expansion can neither bend the pipes nor pull the spigots out
of the socket ends.
In particular the possibility of expansion must be ensured where
the installation is fxed at short intervals.
Note: If other brackets are used always use liner, i.e. rubber,
between pipe and bracket.

LONGITUDINALEXpANSION
The fgure below shows the relationship between pipe length L in
m and longitudinal expansion l in mm for various temperature
differences t.
Example: A 3 m pipe will expand by 2,5 mm at
a temperature difference of 50

C.
The increase in length for a given pipe length can also be
calculated from the following formula.
l = 0,065 x t x L
where
l = longitudinal expansion in mm
0,065 = coeffcient of expansion in mm/m/

C
t = temperature difference in

C
(t = max. temp. in the pipe system
temperature when pipe system installed)
L = length of the pipe system in m.
The longitudinal expansion can usually be absorbed in the
socket joint, see page 22 for minimum depth of insertion.
BLCHER recommends that the pipework system is tested for
leakages before starting using the installation.

- Gravitysystems:
Pipework installations to be tested at max. 0,5 bar, e.g.
by blocking the installations on each deck and flling with
water.
- vacuumsystems:
Pipework installations to be tested in accordance with the
recommendations of the vacuum system supplier. BLCHER
recommends max. -0,85 bar vacuum for OD 50 - 75 mm and
max. -0,6 bar vacuum for pipe sizes bigger than OD 75 mm.

The below graphs demonstrate the relationship between pipe length (L) and longitudinal expansion < L) at various temperature
differences ( t.)

With the right choice of material, a BLCHER

sanitary discharge
system can be used for most types of drainage installations
(see page 2), requiring little maintenance, provided that a few
precautions are taken during installation and operation.
Duringinstallation
During installation care must be taken to prevent contamina-
tion of the stainless steel by carbon steel in tools or otherwise
touching the stainless steel. In itself, carbon steel will not
cause corrosion of the stainless steel surface, but the carbon
steel particles adhering to the stainless steel will rust and cause
discolourings. Always use clean tools suitable for stainless steel
without any adhering iron shavings or particles or rust, stainless
steel wool/brushes and stainless steel brackets, screws, bolts,
nuts, etc. in the stainless steel drainage system.
If welding, or use of carbon steel tools or similar is to take place
close to a stainless steel installation, the stainless steel surface
is to be protected until the work has been completed.
To prevent construction waste or chemicals used in connection
with other construction work from being admitted to the
sanitary discharge system during installation and completing of
other construction work, it is very important to keep the sanitary
discharge system closed and unused until all construction work
has been completed.
All BLCHER

Marine drains lower parts come with a welding

cover to ensure protection of the drainage system during
installation. The sanitary discharge system must also be
thoroughly cleaned and fushed on completion to ensure that
any blockages or leaking joints are revealed before the sanitary
system is put into use.
Inoperation
On delivery from BLCHER, all stainless steel surfaces have
been passivated and are perfectly clean. In other words, the
stainless steel has formed a corrosion-resistant oxide flm over
the entire surface.
To preserve the outstanding anti-corrosion properties of the
stainless steel, surface contamination and deposits are to be
prevented. The general rule is to clean the steel when it be-
comes dirty, which dependent on the environment- may be at
intervals from to 4 times each year. Highly polluted (industrial
atmosphere) or salty air (marine conditions) as well as depo-
sits of chlorine-containing cleaning agents or acid may cause
discolourations and corrosion on lower grade stainless steel,
but the risk of corrosion is considerably reduced or eliminated
if grade AISI 36L is chosen for the installation.
Stainless steel is resistant to a wide range of chemicals and
substances (see table of corrosion resistance, page 28), but a
few guidelines are to be observed as regards what substances
can be discharged through the system:
Waste water containing substances that may cause deposits
of sludge or solids such as sand, plaster or iron shavings
may cause damage to the drainage system
Waste water containing chemicals to which the stainless
steel is not resistant, e.g. hydrochloric acid, may cause
corrosion. Modern cleaning processes use many chemicals,
but care should be taken to ensure that the cleaning agent
is suitable for stainless steel. Mechanical cleaning might
be used as well. Contact the manufacturer of the cleaning
agent if in doubt.
Prevent blockages by regularly fushing of the drainage
system through drains and water traps and through other
rodding access. Blockages owing to fat discharged through
kitchen sinks may be prevented by using a grease separa-
tor.

MATERIALSpECIFICATION-STAINLESSSTEEL
Stainlesssteel
The designation stainless steel applies to a number of alloys
with different properties.
Common to all stainless steels, is the fact that they contain at
least 2% chromium.
Stainless steels can be divided into three main groups and a few
mixed types, according to the structure of steels.
The main groups are:
Austenitic
Ferritic
Martensitic
Of these three main groups, austenitic stainless steel is the most
important, representing about 90% of the total consumption of
stainless steel.
Theimportanceofalloyingelements
Austenitic stainless steel contains at least 8% chromium and
8% nickel, which has given rise to the popular designation 8/8
steel. In general, corrosion resistance is increased in line with
the increased chromium content. Alloys with 2-3% chromium
have a passive layer strong enough to prevent the steel from
rusting when exposed to normal or slightly aggressive media.
The alloying element nickel mainly effects the steel's structure
and mechanical properties. With a suffciently high content of
nickel, the structure of the steel is austenitic. This, as opposed
to the pure chromium steels (ferritic stainless steels), improves
the mechanical properties signifcantly, such as increased impact
resistance and ductility, high resistance to thermal stress, and
improved weldability.
The austenitic structure also leads to changes in the physical
properties of the steel. For instance, the steel becomes non-
magnetic and obtains better thermal conductivity. Nickel also
increases the corrosion resistance against certain materials.
Molybdenum has the same effect on the structure as chromium,
but with a signifcant positive infuence on the corrosion resistance
(except against hydrochloric acid). Normally the molybdenum-
alloyed steels are designated as acid proof, due to their resistance
to most types of acid.
Whyarethesteels"stainless"?
By adding chromium as an alloy to the steel, a passivating oxide
layer with a high content of chromium oxide is formed. The oxide
layer protects the steel surface against the oxygen in air and
water.
Stainless steel has the ability to automatically re-establish
the chromium oxide layer if the steel surface is bared. This
restoration of the oxide layer will only take place if the steel
surface is completely clean and free of temper, welding slag and
contamination from tools of ordinary mild steel.
If this contamination of the surface is not removed, the steel
may corrode. To prevent this, the steel surface should be cleaned
after welding and machining. Acid pickling of the stainless steel
is suitable for this.
The acid pickling effectively removes all impurities from the
surface of the steel and allows re-establishment of a strong,
uniform chromium oxide layer.
The pickling solution usually consists of 0,5-5 vol. % HF (hydrofuoric
acid) and 8-20 vol. % HNO (nitric acid) at a temperature of 77
to 47 F (25 to 60 C). This acid solution removes the existing
chromium oxide layer and any iron contamination leaving a pure
steel surface, which in the subsequent rinse in water reforms a
strong chromium oxide layer.

MATERIALSpECIFICATION-STAINLESSSTEEL
Corrosionresistance
Austenitic chromium-nickel steel is resistant to many different
chemical products and most detergents. BLCHER

drainage
products are manufactured exclusively from this group and as
such are established for use within the food, beverage, chemical,
pharmaceutical, dairy, shipbuilding and commercial catering
industries.
When increased acid-resistance is required, and spot and crevice
corrosion may occur, or in general for marine/off-shore use,
molybdenum-alloyed chromium-nickel steels (36L) may be
used.
These acid-resistant steels resist a number of organic and inorganic
acids (see page 28).
However, acid-proof steels are only partially resistant to solutions
containing chlorides.
Impactresistance
The high tensile strength of stainless steel makes the material
resistant to impact damage at all temperatures. Severe blows to
the material may in certain cases cause dents, they are however
unlikely to fracture the material.
Fireresistance
Stainless steel is non-combustible which means that pipes and
drains made of stainless steel may penetrate deck/bulkhead
partitions without the need for special fre insulation (e.g.
intumescent f ire collars). Furthermore, no toxic fumes or
substances are released from stainless steel in the event of fre.
Thermalstress
Due to the very low heat expansion coeffcient of stainless
steel, BLCHER

drainage products are not adversely affected

by temperature fuctuations occurring in drainage installations.
Consequently, there are no special constraints that determine at
what temperature BLCHER

products should be stored or installed

(see also page 23-24).
Hygiene
Hygiene is an important issue, in particular on cruise vessels. From
practical experience in hygienic installations (food preparation,
healthcare etc.) it is documented that bacterial growth on
stainless steel is signifcantly lower than alternative materials
(e.g. plastics). In addition an unused piece of stainless steel
pipe has a very low surface roughness (K=0.00006 in. (0.005
mm)). This low surface roughness minimises not only bacterial
growth, but also the danger of sediments building up which may
later lead to blockages.
Weight
BLCHER

drainage products are all produced in thin-walled

stainless steel sheet making the most of the materials high
strength to weight ratio.
This makes our product the superior choice when calculating the
weight optimisation for the vessel or off-shore installation in
question.

SOCKETSANDpIpESEALINGRINGS
BLCHER

EuroPipe is jointed using a push-ft spigot and socket

jointing method. The seal between the socket and spigot is referred
to as the BLCHER

lip seal. The BLCHER

lip seal ensures quick

and easy installation of the pipe system and provides a watertight
joint with or without pressure on the system.
The BLCHER

lip seal is also suitable for use within gravity or

vacuum drainage installations.
Choosinggaskets
The BLCHER

lip seal is available in three different rubber quali-

ties, each of which is designed to handle different liquid waste
types at varying operating temperatures.
As standard all BLCHER

pipes and fttings are delivered with

EPDM sealing.
EPDM: The standard BLCHER

lip seal designed for use in general

installations where no oil or gasoline residues occur in
the discharge water. The EPDM lip seal is versatile, with
a wide area of application.
The temperature range is -40 to +22 F
(-35 to +00 C).

NBR: BLCHER

lip seal for applications where gasoline or oil

residues may occur in the discharge water (e.g. in con-
nection with oil and gasoline separation systems). The
NBR lip seal should not be used where solvents are present.
The temperature range is -22 to + 76 F
(-30 to +80 C).

FPM: BLCHER

lip seal for special applications. This material

has a high thermal resistance and withstands exposure to
oil, solvents and highly corrosive acids. However, the FPM
lip seal has only limited resistance against butyl acetate,
acetone and methylated alcohol.
The temperature range is -3 to +392 F
(-25 to +200 C).
