EEE536 Fiber Optic Communication Networks

Course Description: This course aims at introducing the technological developments in the field of optical communication. It also introduces optical components and related network functions based on multi wavelength optical layers, with assignment& routing algorithms along with associated network architecture. The advanced topics on photonic packet switching, Optical Transport Network are also dealt. Prerequisite: EEE 621Modern Digital Communication Course Objectives: The objectives of this course is to : 1. Discuss the technology developments in Optical Communication with major emphasis on related theory/analysis of technical characteristics of Optical Fibre/Components, Systems and Network nodes to enable the design and selection of proper Functional modules/Building blocks intended for practical network applications Impart practical network knowledge based on Optical Communication Network Evolution viz. SONET in terms of Network Elements/Architecture, Network Management, Protection(Reliability),Synchronization . Introduce all- optical signal processing based on Optical components and related network functions based on Multi wavelength Optical layers, with Assignment& Routing algorithms along with associated Network architecture. Introduce advanced topics on Photonic packet switching, Optical Transport Network(OTN).

Course Learning Outcomes and relationship with Program Outcomes: At the end of the course, students shall be able to: 1. Evaluate the technical requirements of Systems and identify the suitable Fibre, Transmitters, Receivers and associated system modules. (a ,c) 2. Evolve proper Network design for Short / Long distance Optical Communication links taking into consideration potential impairments/signal distortion. (c ,h) 3. Understand Optical Networks/Practices sufficient to motivate association with new Emerging Technologies/Optical Functional modules (e , i)

Analyze Optical Networks sufficient to motivate association with new Emerging Technologies Course Topics: (Syllabus) Unit I : OPTICAL COMMUNICATION: Introduction/Overview: Communication- Technology evolutionary trends ( based on Capacity/distance, service, medium, spectrum.)Overview of Optical communication Wireless/ Optical Fibre communication for different network applications and system generations. Fibre optical digital multiplexing technologies (TDM-Asynchronous/Synchronous,WDM). Unit II : OPTICAL FIBRES: Optical fibres guiding theory and characterization. Signal degradation based on attenuation, dispersion and nonlinearities, FibreTypes,generations and applications. Overview of fibre manufacture, cables-Types/applications and Field practices (connectors,splicing,installation) considerations and accessories. Regenerators applications and characterization. Fibre networks evolution as SONET/SDH and associated Integrated-Network Management, Protection, Synchronization features. Access, Metro and Core Networks and associated Architecture/Technologies (PON, IP, ETHERNET,). Unit IV: OPTICAL LAYER NETWORK: WDM based Multiwavelength- Optical networks and associated components.(passive,active)Optical amplifiers- theory, type, applications and usage considerations. Wavelength assignment and routing. Optical Network Elements(OADM,ROADM,CROSSCONNECT) Optical simulation practices and tools. Unit V : ALL OPTICAL TRANSPORT: Optical Transport network and associated Optical Network elements. Networks, services and protocols. New Optical signal processing -OTDM, Packet Switching.
