The reality of loving the Prophet and its true meaning:
The scholars have given different statements regarding the reality of loving the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam and have explained it as follows: Following him. Supporting him, protecting his Sunnah, imitating him and being fearful of contradicting his Sunnah. Continuously mentioning and remembering him. Favouring him over ones self. Missing him and longing to meet him.

Al-Qaadhi Iyaadh, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Most of these statements refer to the fruit of loving the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam but do not address its reality. The reality of loving the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam lies in making all that which one loves and favours correspond to everything that he sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam loved and favoured." These actions usually emanate from one who has intense love for his beloved, either for the joy one finds in looking at him, the spiritual satisfaction or the kindness of the beloved. Our Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam perfectly combined his beautiful appearance, perfect manners, kindness and good treatment of others. Such perfection was unprecedented and will never be equalled. This is the reason why he deserved our full and undivided love.

The virtues and rewards of this love:

Allaah says that which translates as: And whoever obeys Allaah and the Messenger those will be with the ones upon whom Allaah has bestowed favour of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of the truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions. (An-Nisaa: 69).

Aaishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, reported that a man came to the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam and said: "O messenger of Allaah! You are dearer to me than my family, my children and even myself. Sometimes I am sitting in my home and I remember you, and then I am overwhelmed with the desire to come and see you. When I think about your death and mine; I realise that when you die you will at the rank of the Prophets in paradise, but I fear that if I enter paradise, I will not be able to see you." Aaishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, continued: "The Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam did not answer this man until Allaah revealed this verse (given above)." (At-Tabari and others). Anas bin Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, said that a man asked the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam: "When will the (last) hour come?" He sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam replied: What have you done to prepare for it? The man replied: "Nothing, except the love I have for Allaah and His Messenger." The Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam replied: You will be (on the Day of Judgment) with those whom you love. Anas bin Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "We (his companions) never rejoiced at anything more than his words, when he said You will be (on the Day of Judgment) with those whom you love. Anas, may Allaah be pleased with him, continued: "I love the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, Abu Bakr and Umar, may Allaah be pleased with them both, and I hope to be with them (in the Hereafter) due to my love for them, even if I cannot do (the same amount of righteous deeds) as they do." (Bukhaari, Muslim and others). In another narration the man said (in response to the Prophets question of what he had done to prepare for the last hour): "I did not prepare for it with many prayers, fasting or charity." Imaam An-Nawawi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said commenting upon this Hadeeth: "The mans words mean that he did not perform many optional acts of worship." Ibn Hajar, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said "The saying of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam: You will be with those whom you love means 'You will be joined with them and be in their company'. If someone were to ask: 'How can they occupy different ranks yet be together?' We would answer that being in paradise fulfils the pledge that they are together, but not necessary at the same rank." Imaam An-Nawawi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "This Hadeeth points out the virtues of loving Allaah, His Messenger and the righteous, whether dead or alive. It clarifies that it is not a condition to perform the same acts in order to benefit from loving them. Another virtue of loving Allaah and His Messenger sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam is that it will lead a person to adhere to their commands and refrain from what they prohibited. Ibn Masood, may Allaah be pleased with him, and others narrated that a man came to the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam and said: "O Messenger of Allaah! What do you say about a man who loved some people yet did not do what it takes in order for him to

be with them (in the hereafter" The Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam replied: One will be with whom he loves (Bukhaari, Muslim and others). Al-Mubaarakfoori, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said commenting on this Hadeeth: "This means that if he is sincere in his love for them, then he will join them (in the Hereafter) even if he did not perform the same righteous deeds as they did, due to the closeness of their hearts. Also, perhaps this love could lead to him being like them in the performance of righteous deeds". Abu Dharr, may Allaah be pleased with him, said to the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam: "O Messenger of Allaah! What is the status of a man, who loves a group of people, yet cannot perform the same (righteous) actions as they do?" He sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam replied: O Abu Dharr! You will be with those whom you love. Abu Dharr added: "I love Allaah and His Messenger." He sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam he said: You will be with those whom you love. Then Abu Dharr, may Allaah be pleased with him, repeated his statement and so the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam repeated his. (Ahmad, Abu Daawood and Daarami). Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said commenting upon this Hadeeth: "The meaning of this Hadeeth is obvious, because it is natural for someone who loves another to be with him. The closeness to the beloved will be proportional to the intensity of love that exists. If this love is perfected then it entails that one must do all that the beloved requests and commands, provided that one is able to do so. The more one willingly differs from ones beloved, the weaker the love is that exists. Loving someone necessitates hating all that they hate all and whom they hate, provided they are aware of this hatred. This is why Allaah says (that which translates as): You will not find a people who believe in Allaah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allaah and His Messenger (Al-Mujaadilah: 22) loving and befriending are from the deeds of the heart. Believing in Allaah necessitates loving Him and His Messenger, which is of course in stark contradiction to loving those who hate and oppose Allaah and His Messenger." Anas Ibn Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said: One who attains the following three things will taste the sweetness of faith: To make Allaah and His Messenger more beloved to himself than anything else; To love a person for no other reason except for the sake of Allaah; And to hate to return to disbelief just as much as he would hate to be thrown into fire. (Bukhaari, Muslim and others). Imaam An-Nawawi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said commenting upon this Hadeeth: "This is a great Hadeeth and one of the tenets of Islaam. The scholars said regarding Would taste the sweetness of faith that it means enjoining obedience, persevering in order to please Allaah and His Messenger and favouring these over what this worldly life has to offer. The slave will achieve the love of his Lord and His Messenger when he obeys him and refrains from anything which He prohibits."

Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Loving Allaah and His Messenger more than anything else is one of the tenets of Islaam, without which a slave is not considered a believer." Al-Baydhaawi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "The Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam stated that these three factors must exist in order for one's belief to be perfect. If one were to ponder upon the fact that Allaah is the One who created the soul and bequeathed it to man, and that there is nobody or nothing else besides Him that can permit or prevent good from taking place, and that all others beside Him are nothing but mediators (in terms of conveying Allaah's message), and that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam was the one who was entrusted with the task of clarifying all that Allaah requires from mankind; then this would lead His slaves to direct themselves toward their Lord completely. This entails that they love only that which Allaah loves, to love only for His sake, to be certain that what he has promised in terms of reward or punishment is true and to imagine the Last day as if it has already arrived. If these matters are achieved, then the slave will feel as if he is in paradise when he sits in the gatherings of remembrance (i.e., the circles in which the names of Allaah are mentioned and praised). It is only then that the slave will feel that returning to disbelief is just as hateful to him as being thrown into fire."

The obligation of possessing and maintaining this love:

Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisi, may Allaah have mercy upon him said: "It is the consensus of the Muslim scholars that loving Allaah and His Messenger is mandatory for every Muslim." Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Loving Allaah and His Messenger is the greatest action that faith obligates, it is the greatest tenet of faith itself and the most glorified fundamental of it. Indeed loving Allaah and his Messenger is the foundation for all deeds". Allaah says that which translates as: Say [O Muhammad], if your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased are more beloved to you than Allaah and His Messenger and Jihaad [i.e., fighting] in His cause, then wait until Allaah executes His command. And Allaah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people. (At-Tawbah: 24). Al-Qurtubi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said commenting upon this verse: "This verse is evidence that loving Allaah and His Messenger is compulsory, and that this love must take precedence over everything else. This is a ruling on which there is no difference among the scholars". Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Allaah

does not accept that loving Him and His Messenger should only be equal to that of ones family and wealth, or that the love of Jihaad be equal to the love of ones family and wealth. Therefore, this firstly asserts that the love of Allaah and his Messenger must take precedence over the love of ones family and wealth. Secondly, this asserts that the love of Jihaad must take precedence over the love of ones family and wealth. When this is achieved, then this is the manifestation of perfect belief which results in Allaah and His Messenger loving the possessors of it." He, may Allaah have mercy upon him, also said: "Look at the severe warning which Allaah mentioned to those who love their families and wealth more than Allaah, His Messenger and Jihaad for His sake. Therefore, it is understood from this verse that the love of Allaah, His Messenger and Jihaad for His sake must be greater in intensity and must take precedence over family, wealth, dwellings, commerce and friends. Otherwise, a person's belief is incomplete." Al-Qaadhi Iyaadh, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "This verse is enough of an encouragement, proof, clarification and evidence which necessitates loving Allaah and His Messenger. It highlights the seriousness of the issue and also shows how Allaah warned those who favour family, children and wealth over loving Him and His Messenger due to His statement (which translates as): Then wait until Allaah sends His command (for punishment). Then, as further admonition, Allaah concluded the verse by describing the people who fail to do so as misguided sinners." Allaah says that which translates as: The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves. (Al-Ahzaab: 6). Sahl, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Whoever does not feel that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam has full rights of command over him at all times will never taste the sweetness of following the Sunnah because the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam has said: None of you will be a true believer until I am more beloved to him than himself. Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Allaah commanded us to obey His Messenger when He said (that which translates as): He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allaah (An-Nisaa': 80) and He commanded us to follow His Messenger when He said (that which translates as): Say [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allaah, then follow me, [so] Allaah will love you ' (Aal Imraan: 31). Allaah commanded us to honour and support his Messenger and gave him his full rights which He clarified in the Quraan and the Sunnah. He made it compulsory upon us to love him more than ourselves and our families." He, may Allaah have mercy upon him, also said: "Nobody can escape the punishment of Allaah or gain His mercy except through believing in, loving, supporting and following the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam. This is the only thing that will rescue one from punishment in this life and the Hereafter; This is because the greatest and most beneficial bounty is possessing faith which cannot be attained except through him (i.e., the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam). This is because the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam benefits the believer more than he

can benefit himself, and is more sincere to him in advice than he ever could be to himself. It is through him that Allaah Brings people out of the darkness (of misguidance) into the light (of belief). The only path to knowledge of Allaah is through him and this is why the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam is more beneficial to the believer than his own family and even his own self". Imaam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "He who favours his beloved over himself can more easily favour him over his wealth Nobody's belief is complete until the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam is dearer to him than himself, let alone his children or parents." Anas bin Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said:, "None of you will truly believe until I am more beloved to him than his father, his son and all of mankind." (Bukhaari, Muslim and others). Ibn Hajar, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "An evidence of this love is if somebody were to favour losing something extremely precious to themselves rather than lose the chance to see Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, if indeed it were possible for them to see him. Indeed missing out on an opportunity to see the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam is harsher and more heart-breaking for a person than losing extremely precious thing. If this were not the case, then the description of love would not be applicable to such a person. Moreover, the manifestation of love is not restricted to that, but also applies to supporting his Sunnah, defending what he came with and fighting those who opposes it." Al-Qurtubi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Anybody who truly believes in the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam must have love for him in their heart. However, people possess love of different intensities; some are overwhelmed by it while others have the bare minimum, such as those who are immersed in desires and lusts. Such people's heedlessness obscures this love most of the time, but many of them long to see the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam when he is mentioned or when they remember him, more than they long to see their families, children and possessions. This type of love is observed for example when some people favour visiting the Prophets grave over anywhere else. However, this love is weak and therefore the actions that emanate from it do not last long, due to these peoples continued heedlessness." Al-Haleemi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "The basic rule in this issue is that a person realises the merits of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam and his perfect manners, and what he did for the sake of this religion, and knows the rights of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam upon his nation. For the one who is aware of all of these things, while having a sound mind, will certainly know that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam is far worthier for love than a loving father who looks after his child or the caring teacher who is eager to teach his students."

Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said: I swear by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, none of you will truly believe until I am more beloved to him than his father or son." (Muslim). Ibn Hajar, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "The love meant in this Hadeeth is of the type which a person does willingly and as a result of effort that is exerted, not the type which is a part of ones instinct." He, may Allaah have mercy upon him, also said "This type of love is recognised and appreciated if one were to reflect If one were to ponder on the benefit that he has gained from the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, who led him out of the darkness of disbelief to the light of belief, either directly (like for his companions) or indirectly (like those after his companions), he would realise that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam will be the cause for his eternal life of joy and happiness (in the Hereafter). Therefore, he will realise that he has benefited more from the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam than anyone else. As a result, he sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam deserves to be loved more than anyone else, because he has far more reason to be loved than anyone else, due to the immense benefit that he gave. People differ in regard to their love for the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam due to the frequency with which they remember him or their level of heedlessness. There is no doubt that the companions of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam had the highest degree of this love, because this love is the fruit of the knowledge and awareness of the benefit that one has gained from the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, and they were the most aware of this benefit." Al-Bayhaqi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Part of loving the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam is to love his family, his relatives, and his wives due to him honouring them, as well as loving his companions whom Allaah Himself has praised."

Abdullaah Ibn Hishaam, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "We were with the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam as he was holding Umar ibn Al-Khattaab, may Allaah be pleased with him, by his hand. Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him, said to the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam: "You are more beloved to me than everything except myself." The Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam replied: "No O 'Umar! I swear by Him in whose hand my soul is, (you will not truly believe) until I become more beloved to you than yourself." Thereupon, 'Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "I swear by Allaah that you are now more beloved to me than myself." The Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam replied: "Now! O Umar (i.e., now your faith is complete)." (Bukhaari). Ibn Hajar, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "This means that you will not be able to achieve the highest rank of belief until the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam becomes more beloved to you than everything else you will not be truthful in your love until you favour his pleasure over your own desires, even if you thought that this would cause your destruction." He, may Allaah have mercy upon him, also said: "The first answer Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him, gave was instinctive, then

he contemplated, pondered and realised that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam was dearer to him than his own self, because he sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam rescued him from that which would have caused his destruction in this life and the Hereafter, so then he gave the second and correct statement. Thereupon, Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said: "Now! O Umar" meaning; now you have realised the truth and have given the correct statement." Al-Haleemi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "It is established that loving the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam is part of one's belief, and the virtues and merits which Allaah instilled in His Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam which lead to one loving him have been clarified. These virtues and merits make a person who reflects upon them always remember him by sending salutations and peace upon him, always obeying him, carrying out his mission, establishing the Shareeah which he came with, performing the deeds which would make one worthy of his intersession, rejoicing for being a member of his nation and continuously reciting the Quraan which was his miracle. The person who does all these things truly loves the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam."

Signs of loving the Prophet and its implications:

Allaah says what which translates as: Say [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allaah, then follow me, [so] Allaah will love you ' (Aal 'Imraan: 31). Muhammad Ibn Jafar, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "This verse means that there is no way that leads to the love of Allaah except the Prophets way." Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Allaah has made the truthfulness of ones claim to love Him conditional to obedience to the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam. He has made obeying His Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam a way of gaining His love." He, may Allaah have mercy upon him, also said: "Following the way of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam internally and externally attains Allaah's love. Jihaad for His sake, supporting those who love Him and enmity against His enemies is the reality of loving Allaah Many people claim they love Him, yet they the furthest from the Prophets Sunnah, enjoining good and Jihaad." Allaah says that which translates as: You will not find a people who believe in Allaah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allaah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred. Those He has decreed within their hearts faith and supported them with spirit from Him. And We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. Allaah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him those are the party of Allaah. Unquestionably, the party of Allaah they are the successful. (Al-Mujaadilah: 22)

Al-Qaadhi Iyaadh, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said commenting on this verse: "These were the companions of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam who killed their beloved ones and fought against their fathers and sons in order to please the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam. As an example of this spirit, Abdullaah, the son of Abdullaah Ibn Ubay (the chief of the hypocrites) asked the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam regarding his own father: 'If you give the command, then I will go and behead him". Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "There is no love more complete and perfect than that which a believer has for his Lord - and there is no one who deserves such love other than Allaah. All other types of love for a believer come as a part or a result of this love of Allaah, and the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam is only loved, followed and obeyed for the sake of pleasing Allaah." Al-Bayhaqi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Part of loving the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam is loving his companions because Allaah has praised themand if it becomes known that loving the Prophets companions is a part of ones faith, then it follows that knowing about their virtues is part of this love, as well as believing these virtues, knowing the esteemed position that they held with the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, giving them their due right, propagating these virtues, supplicating for them, following them in issues of religion, overlooking any mistakes that they might have had and not indulging in issues of controversy regarding conflicts which may have occurred between them." Abdullaah Ibn Masood, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "He who wants to increase his love of Allaah and His Messenger, let him recite the Quraan." Abdullaah Ibn Al-Mughaffal, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "A man came to the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam and said to him: I swear by Allaah that I love you. The Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam replied: Think about what you are saying. The man said again I swear by Allaah that I love you. The Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said again: Think about what you are saying. The man said for the third time: I swear by Allaah that I love you. Thereupon, the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said: If you love me, then prepare the protective tool to receive poverty, because poverty strikes those who love me faster than a river runs downhill. (Tirmidhi and others). Commenting on this Hadeeth, Al-Mubaarakfoori, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "The saying of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam Think about what you are saying means that you are approaching a grave situation, for nothing can be more serious than being subject to trials and hardships. The statement then prepare the protective tool to receive poverty refers to patiencethe meaning of the Hadeeth is, 'if you are true to your claim of loving me, then prepare yourself with a tool that will assist you at the time of trials and adversities, and since trials and adversities accompany loving me, then protect your faith with patience which will

strengthen your certainty in me and prevent despair at the time of poverty. faster than a river runs downhill is an indication of the great speed at which poverty will strike, and that trials and hardships will appear and occur, vast in number. Our Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam faced the most trials, followed by the other prophets, therefore, the followers of our Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam will get the amount of trials which is proportional to the level of love that they have for him." Saeed Ibn Abu Saeed, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that his father, may Allaah be pleased with him, complained to the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam due to poverty, so the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said: Be patient Abu Saeed, because poverty strikes those who love me amongst you faster a river runs downhill. (Ahmad and others). Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said: Amongst the people who love me the most from my nation are people who come after me, one of them would sacrifice his children and family just so that they could see me (Muslim).

Examples of the Salafs love of the Prophet:

A woman from the tribe of Banu Deenaar lost her husband, father and brother in the battle of Uhud. When she was informed of this, she, may Allaah be pleased with her, asked "But what happened to the Prophet?" The people replied: "All praise is due to Allaah, he is as safe as you would wish him to be." She, may Allaah be pleased with her, replied: "Show him to me so that I can see for myself" so the people pointed him out. When she saw him, she said: "Any disaster besides that of losing you is insignificant." Abdullaah Ibn Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him and his father, asked his father: "Why do you like Usaamah more than me? I swear by Allaah that he never beat me to any battle." 'Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him, replied: "Because Zayd (Usaamahs father) was dearer to the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam than your father was, and Usaamah was dearer to the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam than you were. Therefore, I favour the love of the Prophet over my love." Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab, may Allaah be pleased with him, said to Al-Abbaas (the Prophets uncle): "Embrace Islaam! I swear by Allaah that it would be more beloved to me if you embraced Islaam than if Al-Khattaab (his own father) did so." This was because Al-'Abbaas was dearer to the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam than Al-Khattaab. Is-haaq At-Tujayni, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Whenever the companions of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam mentioned him after his death, they would shiver and cry.". Al-Qaadhi Iyaadh, may Allaah have mercy upon him, added: "This was also what many of the Taabieen (the generation after the

companions) used to do, due to the love for him that they possessed, and longed to see him. Others also did the same thing, in order to honour him." Musab Ibn Abdullaah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Whenever Imaam Maalik, may Allaah have mercy upon him, would mention the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, his complexion would change and he would bow down his head and cry until it became difficult for those around him to bear. Therefore, one day, the people around him asked about this and he answered them by saying 'If you saw what I saw, then you would not find what I do strange; I saw Muhammad Ibn Al-Munkadir, may Allaah have mercy upon him, and he was a master of Quraanic recitation, whenever we asked him about a Hadeeth from the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam he would cry. I used to see Jafar Ibn Muhammad, may Allaah have mercy upon him, who was one of the scholars who feared Allaah and was very humorous and always smiling, whenever the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam was mentioned in his presence, he would become pale. He never narrated any Hadeeth unless he was in the state of Wudhoo. Once I became separated from him, then, when I saw him again, he would be praying, reciting the Quraan, or keeping silent. He never got involved in matters which did not concern him. I used to visit Aamir Ibn Abdullaah Ibn Az-Zubayr, may Allaah have mercy upon him, and when the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam was mentioned in his presence, he would cry until the tears ran dry." Al-Qaadhi Iyaadh, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Whoever loves someone will love all that his beloved loves. This is confirmed in the history of the companions of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam. They would practice this to the extent that they would forego things that were permissible for them to keep, or adopt things that were not compulsory or even recommended for them to do so. Anas bin Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, said that when he saw that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam liked squash and looked for it on his plate, he liked squash ever since."

He, may Allaah have mercy upon him, also said: "One of the signs of ones love for Allaah is loving the Quraan; A sign of loving the Quraan is to love the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam; A sign of loving the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam is to love his Sunnah; A sign for loving his Sunnah is to love the Hereafter; A sign for loving the Hereafter is to hate this life; And a sign for hating this life is to possess from it just enough provisions to help one reach the Hereafter." Haatim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "He who claims three things without fulfilling three requirements is lying; If he claims to love Allaah without refraining from His prohibitions; If he claims to love Paradise without spending from his wealth in charity; And if he claims to love the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam without loving the poor." Abdullaah Ibn Al-Mubaarak, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Anyone having the following two characteristics will be saved (on the Day of Judgement); sincerity and loving the companions of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam." Shaqeeq Ibn Ibraaheem, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said that Ibraaheem Ibn Adham. may Allaah have mercy upon him, passed by one of the markets of Basrah, so the people of the market gathered around him and asked: "O Aboo Is-haaq! Allaah says in the Quraan (that which translates as): Call upon me, I will respond to you. (Ghaafir: 60) and we have been supplicating for a long time but Allaah has not responded to us." He, may Allaah have mercy upon him, replied: "O people of Basrah! Your hearts have died due to the following reasons: o o o o o o o o o You know Allaah but you do not fulfil His rights. You recite the Qur'aan but you do not act in accordance to it. You claim to love the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam but have abandoned his Sunnah. You claim enmity against Satan but have taken him as a guide. You claim to love Paradise but are not working to attain it. You claim to fear Hell but have made yourselves hostages to it. You keep yourselves busy with analysing the faults of others and are neglecting your own. You eat from the bounties of your Lord but never thank Him for it. You bury your dead but never learn any lessons from their death."

Ali Ibn Abu Taalib, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam took Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn, may Allaah be pleased with them both, by their hands and said: He who loves me, these two and their father and mother will be with me on the same rank on the Day of Resurrection. (Tirmidhi) - This is an extremely weak Hadeeth. Anas bin Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said: He who revives my Sunnah loves me, and he who loves me will be with me in Paradise. (Tirmidhi) This is a weak Hadeeth. Anas bin Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said: Everything has a foundation, and the foundation of Islaam is to love the Messenger and his household (Ibn An-Najjaar) This is a fabricated Hadeeth. Abdullaah Ibn Amr, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said: None of you will truly believe until his desires coincides with that which I came with. (Ibn Abu Aasim). This is a weak Hadeeth. Ali Ibn Abu Taalib, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said: Train your children to do three things, to love your Prophet, to love his family members and to recite the Quraan. Those who memorise the Quraan will be under the shade of Allaah on The Day of Resurrection, when there will be no shade except His, they will be with the Prophets and Allaahs chosen ones. (Tirmidhi) This is an extremely weak Hadeeth.
