Running the Desktop File Migration Utility

The Desktop File Migration Utility is a component of the Mechanical Desktop Migration Assistance. It guides you through the process of assembling your drawing files into lists, and then upgrades the files automatically to the current release of Mechanical Desktop. During the migration process, your files are opened, saved, run through the migration options, and then saved again. You can use this migration utility to upgrade files from Mechanical Desktop Release 2 and later. If your files from Mechanical Desktop 2 contain complex fillets, it is recommended that you migrate those files to Release 3 first. To do this, open a file in Release 3. For files created in Release 3, it is recommended that you open them in Release 4 first. For files created in release 4, it is recommended that you open them in Release 5 first. On the command line, enter AMUPDATEALL, and save the file. Then you can migrate the file to Release 6 using the Desktop File Migration Utility. In order to successfully migrate and run options on all of your files:
s s s

Verify that the files are closed by all users and in all assemblies. Save read-only files using different names so they can be saved during migration. List part and subassembly files as well as master assembly files.

In the migration process, files are saved without their external attachments. Assembly files that contain only a combined part are migrated to a part file. In an assembly, an xref that cannot be locked cannot be migrated using the migration utility.

NOTE Before you run this tool, you must run Mechanical Desktop (without
the Power Pack) once to initialize the registry settings.

Using the Stand-Alone License Manager

When you buy a copy of AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop, you authorize the program to run on a single computer. With the Portable License Utility, you can install AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop on several computers and share the authorization among them. This information is intended for use with single-user versions of AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop outside of the United States, and in educational, NFR (Not For Resale), Try and Buy, and Term Use versions of AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop worldwide.

The AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop License

When you authorize AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop, only the computer you authorized is licensed to run that copy of AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop. The licensing software identifies the licensed computer by using certain components on the computer, such as the hard disk. The AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop license is only valid on one computer at a time. With the AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop Portable License Utility, you can transfer the license to another computer and then transfer it to a different computer, or transfer the license back to the original computer. See Transfer a License on page 40 for instructions.

Important License Information

The licensing software uses the following components on your computer to identify the license rights on that computer:
s s s

Primary boot disk Files in the license folder System date and time

Making changes to any of these components may cause a license error that requires you to reauthorize your copy of AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop. You can avoid most license errors if you take precautions. The following sections provide important license information and describe ways to protect your license from errors.

Using the Stand-Alone License Manager

35

The License Folder

When you install AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop, Setup installs a hidden license folder named c:\c_dilla. Do not tamper with the license folder or any files within the folder. Tampering with the license folder or the files within the folder may cause license errors.

The System Clock

The AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop license allows for time changes within two days of the current time on your system clock. If you set the system clock back more than two days, the next time you start AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop, you receive a message that gives you the option of correcting the system clock. If you do not correct the system clock, you receive a license error and must reauthorize AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop. For security reasons, you can only set your clock back twice.

Update Components on a Licensed Computer or Installing a New Computer

If you make changes to your computer, or if you install a new computer, you need to take steps to ensure that you do not receive license errors. To move your license to a newly installed computer 1 If you have a new computer, and you want to use AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop on the new computer, install AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop on the new computer 2 Move the license to the new computer using the instructions in Transfer a License. 3 Uninstall AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop from your old computer. To avoid license errors due to updating a computer 1 Before updating the hardware on your computer, transfer the license to a different computer using the instructions in Transfer a License.

NOTE If you are installing a new computer, and you can still access the
licensed copy of AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop on your old computer, you do not need to transfer the license at this time. You can install the new computer, then transfer the license from your old computer to the new one.

36

Chapter 2

Single-User Installation

2 Make the required changes to your computer. 3 Reinstall AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop, if necessary. 4 Import the license back to the updated computer using the instructions in Transfer a License.

NOTE Verify that the machine identification code on your computer has not
changed, even if you made changes to your computer that did not require you to reinstall AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop. The machine identification code may change depending on the changes you made.

Uninstall and Reinstall

The license information is not removed when you uninstall AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop. If you reinstall on the same machine, the AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop license information is still valid. You do not have to reauthorize.

Restore from a Disk Backup

In a lab or training environment, it is common to install software on a master PC, create an image, and then copy that image to multiple PCs. After each class or test session, this image is used to restore the PCs to a known state so that no modified files are carried forward into the new session. To avoid reauthorizing each lab machine after this process, using AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop in this environment requires a small exception to the rule about modified files. Before the PC master image is restored, the c:\c_dilla folder must be backed up and restored after the master image is restored. To perform an initial setup (one-time only) 1 Install AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop on the master PC. 2 Remove any files from c:\c_dilla, but keep the folder c:\c_dilla\setup. 3 Create the master image from the bootable partition. 4 Restore the image onto each PC. 5 Launch AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop and authorize it on each PC. Unique request codes are generated for each PC and cannot be reused.

NOTE You do not need to back up the c_dilla folder at this point, because it
will be modified during use.

Using the Stand-Alone License Manager

37

To restore the original configuration (ongoing) 1 After the last time AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop is run on the PC, copy the c:\c_dilla folder to a backup. The files should easily fit on a floppy disk. 2 Restore the master image. 3 Before running AutoCAD Mechanical 6/Mechanical Desktop 6, restore the specific c:\c_dilla folder for each individual PC.

License Errors
Many license errors require you to reauthorize AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop. If you receive an error, follow the instructions in Authorizing Single Users on page 29 to request an authorization code. You can continue to run AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop for seven days after receiving most license errors. After seven days, you must enter an authorization code to run AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop. Receiving another error of the same type that you originally received within the seven-day waiting period eliminates any remaining time. In that case, you must enter an authorization code to run AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop.

Portable License Utility

Using the AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop Portable License Utility, you can create a pool of computers that share one license. You can run AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop on any computer in the pool. However, you can only run AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop on one computer at a time using the same license. The Portable License Utility controls the transfer of an active license from one computer to another and ensures that the software is activated only on the computer that is licensed.

38

Chapter 2

Single-User Installation

License Transfers
You can transfer your active license by using either a transfer file or a transfer code. The first time you transfer your license, or if you have changed your license details since the last transfer, you must use a transfer file. A transfer file contains all of the information necessary to transfer a license between computers. You can transfer a file on a diskette in a shared network folder, or as an email attachment. The option to use a transfer file is always available when you export a license. A transfer code is a 16-character code that is generated by the exporting computer. You enter the transfer code on the computer to which you are transferring the license. The transfer code option is not available the first time the license is exported or if the machine identification code changes. In these cases you must use a transfer file.

View License Status

You can view license status on the Export tab in the Portable License Utility. You must have at least one active license to run AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop. If the Export tab is empty, you have no active licenses on the current computer. You can export any active license. To view license status 1 On the computer with the active license, from the Start menu (Windows), choose Programs AutoCAD Mechanical 6/Mechanical Desktop 6 AutoCAD Portable License Utility to run the Portable License Utility. 2 Choose the Export tab. 3 License information is displayed in a tree view. 4 Expand the tree view so that you can view the status for each license and the names of other computers in the pool by double-clicking any of the licenses in the list. 5 Select the item you want to view. The Export Information box, located at the bottom of the Export tab, displays additional information about the selected item. The Export button exports the license to the selected computer. Network Installation

Planning Network Installations

Installing on a network requires careful planning. The type of AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop installation you choose to deploy can differ depending on your network infrastructure and requirements for client use. Each AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop network installation requires two or more of the following components depending on the type of deployment you choose:
s

Autodesk License Manager (AdLM): Controls available licenses. A user can run AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop only if a license is available. The ADLM run tree is required for client- and network-based deployments. AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop run tree: A shared network disk resource where AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop is installed. The AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop run tree is required for networkbased deployments and is not required for client-based deployments. Deployment location: A shared network resource where a preconfigured AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop setup program resides. A user runs this setup program to install AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop from the network onto the client workstation. A deployment location is required for client- and network-based deployments.

You can configure a network deployment environment so that users can install AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop on their workstations from the network server, or you can install AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop on a network server for access by multiple clients. Whether you install AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop on each client workstation or on the network server, users can share data on the server hard disk and store drawings they dont want to share on a local hard disk. Each method offers certain benefits. You can store each of the three network components on the same server or on separate servers. You can use a shared installer data tree to implement different types of installations on the same server. The configuration you use is based on the structure of your network, the number of users, and your performance requirements. For detailed information about planning network installations, refer to the Network Administrators Guide.

Installing Mechanical Products on a Network

49

You must install the Autodesk License Manager (AdLM). The AdLM provides authorization for clients running AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop from a network server and contains tools that provide query and reporting capabilities for network administrators. You install the AdLM using the Network Setup wizard. The following is an outline for planning a network installation, and references to information located in the Network Administrators Guide. To plan for a network installation 1 Make sure that your network, servers, and workstations meet the system requirements. See System Requirements. 2 Choose a network installation configuration that works best for your users. See Network Installation Configuration. 3 Create a network share to hold the client deployment image files. Be sure to provide read/write access to all users who will install AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop from this share. 4 Create an .htm file for use as Bulletin Board file in the Today window. 5 Run the Network Setup Wizard to install the network deployment files, the Autodesk License Manager, and FLEXlm . See The Network Setup Wizard. 6 Contact Autodesk to receive a license file. See Obtain and Set Up a License File. 7 Configure the license server. See Configure the Server. 8 Inform the users that the network deployment is complete and provide them with instructions. See Client Installation. For more detailed information about installing on a network, refer to the online Network Administrators Guide.

Optimizing Performance

In This Chapter

This chapter provides information for configuring and optimizing the performance of AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop . Some environment settings specify how AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop perform and search for files. Command line switches specify which directories AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop search for the support, device driver, and configuration files.

s Using command line switches s Setting environment variables

51

Using Command Line Switches

Command line switches are parameters that you can add to the acad.exe command line which enable AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop to perform additional operations when the program starts. For example, AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop can start with an alternative configuration, run a script, load a prototype drawing, and open a drawing with a saved view. To change your AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop shortcut properties switch settings, you need to change the command line text associated with the AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop icon or shortcut. For instance, you can create shortcuts that use different configuration files, or you can have two AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop shortcuts, one for editing drawings and the other for plotting. AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop resolves the environment settings in the following way:
s

s s

If you use a command line switch to specify an environment setting, the command line switch overrides the settings specified in either the Options dialog box or the environment variable. If a command line switch is not set, the corresponding value set in the Options dialog box is used. If neither a command line switch nor an Options value is set, the environment variable value is used.

NOTE Command line switches and environment variables override Options

values for the current session only. They do not alter the system registry.

52

Chapter 4

Optimizing Performance

To change a command line switch 1 Right-click the AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop icon on the Desktop. 2 Choose Properties. 3 In the AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop Properties dialog box, choose the Shortcut tab.

4 In the Shortcut tab, edit the parameters for the switch in the Target box. When using a switch option, you must follow the switch with a space as shown in the previous examples.

Using Command Line Switches

53

Setting the /c Switch

The /c switch specifies the path for the hardware configuration file that you want to use. You can specify a directory or a particular file. All configuration files have the .cfg file name extension. The default file name is acad2000i.cfg, but you can specify any file name. AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop appends the .cfg file name extension if the extension isnt present. If the file doesnt exist, AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop creates it. If you do not use the /c switch, AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop creates the acad2000i.cfg file during start-up. If you dont set the /c switch, AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop searches the executable directory and uses the ACADCFGW or ACADCFG environment variable to define the configuration file and directory location. To have AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop place your acad2002.cfg file in a directory called d:\wincfg, set the /c switch as follows: /c d:\wincfg

Setting the /s Switch

The /s switch designates support directories other than the current directory. Support files include text fonts, menus, AutoLISP files, linetypes, and hatch patterns. Set this switch to point AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop to your support files directory; otherwise, AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop uses the support file search path specified in the Options dialog box. The maximum number of directories you can specify in the path is 15. Each directory name is delimited by semicolons. When you specify support directories with the /s switch, the directories are valid only during the current AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop session. The /s switch setting does not make the support directories permanent unless you change the support directories in the Options dialog box. All changes made in the Options dialog box are saved between AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop sessions.

NOTE If you have set the ACAD environment variable for an earlier release,
AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop retains the support file search path information, and places the information in the path after the default path information. This support file search path information is referenced the first time you start AutoCAD Mechanical 6/Mechanical Desktop 6.

54

Chapter 4

Optimizing Performance

Setting the /b Switch

The /b switch designates a script to run after AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop starts. To invoke a script when you start AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop, use the following syntax: acad [drawing file] /b script The script file must be listed after the /b switch on the command line; an SCR file type is assumed. If AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop cant find the script file, it reports that it cant open the file. Scripts can be used to set up drawing parameters in a new drawing file. For example, the following command creates a new drawing called widget and runs the script called setup.scr: acad widget /b setup When the script has finished, the Command prompt is displayed. You must be very familiar with the sequence of AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop prompts to provide an appropriate sequence of responses in a script file.

NOTE AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop prompts and command

names may change in future releases, so you may need to revise your scripts when you upgrade. It is recommended that you avoid using abbreviations.

Setting the /r Switch

The /r switch restores the default system pointing device. It creates a new configuration file (acad2002.cfg) and renames the previous acad2002.cfg file to acad2002.bak.

Setting the /t Switch

The /t switch creates a new drawing based on a template or prototype drawing. For example, to start AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop and create a new drawing based on the template drawing called ansi, you enter: acad /t ansi

Using Command Line Switches

55

Setting the /nologo Switch

The /nologo switch starts AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop without first displaying the logo screen.

Setting the /v Switch

The /v switch designates a particular view of the drawing for display upon the start-up of AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop. For example, to open the drawing called widget and specify the view called PLOTVIEW, enter the following: acad widget /v plotview

Setting the /p Switch

The /p switch specifies a user-defined registry profile for starting AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop. The selected profile is in effect only for the current session of AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop, unless you make another profile current in the Options dialog box during that session. You create or import Profiles on the Profiles tab in the Options dialog box. With the /p switch, you can only specify those profiles that are listed in the Options dialog box. If the profile does not exist, AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop uses the current profile: acad /p profile_name If you use spaces in a profile name, you must surround the name in quotation marks when you use the /p switch: acad /p profile name

Setting Environment Variables

You can specify some environment settings using environment variables. For example, you can set a variable that specifies the path that contains your project drawing files. The operating system you run determines the procedure you use to set environment variables.

56

Chapter 4

Optimizing Performance

To set an environment variable 1 From the Start menu (Windows ), choose Settings Control Panel, and then double-click the System icon. 2 In the System Properties dialog box, choose the Environment tab. The System Variables box displays the variables set for any user of the computer. The User Variables box lists the variables set for only the current user. 3 To set a System Variable, click in the System Variables box. To set a User Variable, click in the User Variables box. Enter the name of the variable you want to set. For example, enter PROJPATH. 4 In the Value box, enter the setting. For example, enter the path to your project drawing files. 5 Choose Set. 6 Choose OK. 7 Restart AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop and enter the variable in the Options dialog box. To specify an environment variable in AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop 1 Follow the procedure to set an environment variable. 2 Be sure to restart AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop in Microsoft Windows NT, or restart Windows 2000, Windows ME, or Windows 98 before starting AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop. 3 In AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop, from the Tools menu, select Options. 4 In the Options dialog box, in the Files tab, select Support File Search Path, and then choose Add. 5 Enter the name of the environment variable preceded and followed by a percent sign (%). For example, if you set a PROJPATH environment variable, enter: %PROJPATH%. 6 Choose OK. You can include a variable in a Support File Search Path. For example, you can enter d:\dev%PATH1% and AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop resolves the path using the PATH1 value. However, AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop does not support nested variables. If you enter %PROJPATH% in AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop as a support file search path and, in Windows you set the value of the PROJPATH environment variable to include another variable, such as c:\dev%PATH1%, AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop does not resolve the path.

61

Overview of Plotting
Understanding terms and concepts that relate to plotting makes your first plotting experience in AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop easier.

Plotter Manager
The Plotter Manager is a window that lists plotter configuration (PC3) files for every nonsystem printer that you install. Plotter configuration files can also be created for Windows system printers if you want AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop to use default properties different from those used by Windows. Plotter configuration settings specify port information, raster and vector graphics quality, paper sizes, and custom properties that depend on the plotter type. The Plotter Manager contains the Add-a-Plotter wizard, which is the primary tool for creating plotter configurations. The /add-a Plotter wizard prompts you for information about the plotter you want to set up.

Layouts
A layout represents a plotted page. You can create as many layouts as you need. Each layout is saved on its own layout tab and can be associated with a different page size and plotter. Elements that only appear on a plotted page, such as title blocks and notes, are drawn in paper space in a layout. The objects in the drawing are created in model space on the Model tab. To view these objects in the layout, you create layout viewports.

62

Chapter 5

Configuring Plotters and Printers

Page Setups
When you create a layout, you specify a plotter and settings such a page size and plot orientation. You can control these settings for layouts and for the Model tab using the Page Setup dialog box. You can name and save page setups for use with other layouts. If you dont specify all the setting sin the Page Setup dialog box when you create a layout, you can set up the page just before you plot. Or you can override a page setup at plot time. You can use the new page setup temporarily for the current plot, or you can save the new page setup.

Plot Styles
A plot style controls how an object or layer is plotted by determining plotted properties such as lineweight, color, and fill style. Plot style tables collect groups of plot styles. The Plot Style Manager is a window that shows all the plot style tables available in AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop. There are two plot style types: color-dependent and named. A drawing can only use one type of plot style table. You can convert a plot style table from one type to the other. You can also change the type of plot style table a drawing uses once it has been set. For color-dependent plot style tables, an objects color determines how it is plotted. These plot style table files have .ctb extensions. You cannot assign color-dependent plot styles directly to objects. Instead, to control how an object is plotted, you change its color. For example all object assigned the color red in a drawing plot the same way. Named plot style tables use plot styles that are assigned directly to objects and layers. These plot style table files have .stb extensions. Using then enables each object in a drawing to be plotted different, independent of its color.

Recovering from System Failures

AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop can be abnormally terminated because of a power failure, a program error, a Windows Program Manager failure, or because you restarted your computer before exiting AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop. To minimize data loss in case of a system failure, use the Automatic Save preference. AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop makes a backup copy of the file at the interval that you specify. If AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop or another Windows application fails and reports an application error message, restart Windows before restarting AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop. If youre concerned about data corruption, use AMRECOVER to check drawing integrity or recover a damaged drawing. To recover from a system failure 1 From the Assist menu, choose Options. 2 In the Options dialog box, choose the Open and Save tab. 3 Under File Safety Precautions, in Automatic Save, enter the number of minutes you want AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop to wait between saves. 4 Choose OK.

Managing Files After System Failures

After a system failure, if you are on a network, you should not delete temporary files until you have verified that they are not part of an active editing session. Other temporary files may be left in the drawing directory or the temporary file directory. These files have the extension .ac$ (temporary drawing file). If you are using AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop in a mixed environment with AutoCAD Release 12, Release 13, Release 14, or AutoCAD Data Extension (ADE), you may also see drawing lock files with the .dwk and .dwl extensions. AutoCAD Mechanical 6/Mechanical Desktop 6 does not use these files, but do not delete them until you verify that they are not needed by Release 12, Release 13, Release 14, or ADE users. AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop removes lock files when they are no longer needed. It is recommended that you delete any old temporary files you find, but only after verifying that they are not in use.

When you save a named drawing for the first time, AutoCAD Mechanical/ Mechanical Desktop creates a backup copy of the drawing using the .bak file name extension. Each time you use SAVE or SAVEAS with the current drawing name, AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop updates the backup file. If your program terminates unexpectedly, AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop tries to rename the backup file to prevent the corrupted file from replacing the existing backup file. AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop renames the backup file with the .bk1 file name extension if that file does not exist. If that backup file exists, AutoCAD Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop generates new file types in the sequence .bk2 to .bk9, .bka to .bkz, .baa to .bzz until it finds a unique file name. If your system fails and the backup file contains the previous version of the drawing file, copy the backup file to a safe place in case you need to revert to that version. To use the backup copy of the drawing, rename the file with a .dwg extension.
