What is FMD?
y Fluorescent Multilayer disc is an optical disc that uses

fluorescent rather than reflective material to store data. y It is an three dimensional storage disc developed by Constellation 3D.

Max data transfer rates are approximately 1GB/sec. FMD is a readable and re-writable disc. FMD is a transparent disc. It consists of multiple data layers. Data is recorded on multiple layers inside a disc. Capacity of each data layer is 4.7 GB. Each data layer consists of pits & groves.

Why FMD?

Increased disc Capacity. Quick parallel access and retrieval information. Media tolerances. Usage Flexibility.

Operating Principle:

The principle operation of FMD is based on a phenomenon of photochromism. The laser beam when focused on the information material the material starts radiating than reflecting. The laser beam causes the photo chrome material to posses the fluorescent properties . The fluorescence is caught up by a device called photo receiver.

Comparison of Disc Layers:

Technological Process:

Hot Stamping: The layer is pressed with polycarbonate and stamped twice with hot temperature. This results in two information layer with pits on each side and filled with fluorescent material. Photo polymerization: This process is carried out in order to prevent a physical contact with information layer on the edge of the disc this is filled with polymeric material.

Advantages of FMD:

Prevents problem of interference since it uses an incoherent fluorescent light. Compatible with CD and DVD formats with more storage area and faster access. Fluorescent technology do not require special manufacturing conditions. Compatible with present CD/DVD formats & ability to withstand more extreme conditions. Unique dye chemistry of FMD offers an extraordinary amount of security.

Applications:

Storage of a very high detailed archive of maps. Ability to store the whole of a series of TV programme (eg, 20 episodes, ach an hour long). Digital cinema film, HDTV players. Internet content streaming and data backup storage.

Conclusion:
The rapid technological development that is taking place in storage devices has also made the man think about the needs and the requirements for the storage devices. Mans need for additional storage space is increasing The FMD Digital Cinema disc has the potential to provide a secure , removable, single disc distribution method. The FMD can provide us with a staggering 140 GB of storage space seems to be an enticing solution for the storagehungry masses.
