3. Contributions to the scientific advancement

Founded and led the Plant Health Clinic, to meet the local demands of farming community. Instrumental in several pest-diagnosis, trainings and other extension activities and problem-solving tasks of national and international importance. Furthered the establishment of Institutes Biocontrol Laboratory. Based on our research, training and extension efforts, developed science of biological control of insect pests and weeds, which got impetus after Bhopal Gas Tragedy in India. The Trichocard concept defined/coined by me has helped many sugarcane farmers and industries to avoid usage of chemical pesticides for the management of borer pests. The low-cost technology generated by me and executed through national governments (1995-98) saved the Caribbean agric., inter and intra regional trade & tourism, which was affected due to a quarantine pest, Maconellicoccus hirsutus. Pusa Protocol for Parthenium Management (PPPM-2008) developed by us through the funding of Department of Biotechnology, GOI has been recommended by the related taskforce for large-scale adoption by the state governments. The first authored book entitled Biological Pest Suppression by me (RD Gautam, 1994, revised in 2008) has helped in designing & teaching the subject in Indian Universities and abroad besides awareness on conservation of biodiversity. Low-cost rearing techniques of insects, parasitoids, predators, entomopathogens especially Beauveria bassiana and their hosts have helped in establishing Biocontrol Labs/ Quarantine Labs in India and abroad besides production of biocontrol agents by several NGOs, which will go long way in training/teaching and science popularisation for the benefit of mankind. My observations on Fortuitous Biological Control in the light of liberalization in the agricultural trade are being acknowledged, which avoids hefty expenditures to be incurred on implementation of Classical Biological Control programmes. During 38 yrs of my service mainly at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) I have published over 300 publications, taught for 35 yrs, and guided 15 Ph D and 3 M Sc scholars from India & abroad who are well placed either in India or abroad. Published more than 300 publications, comprising research papers in referred journals (132), technical/popular articles (Hindi-18, English-11), technical bulletins & manuals (5), books (12), book chapters (33), compendium & teaching notes (17), papers in symposia/ seminars etc. (41), dossiers (4), reports (7), posters, leaflets & documentaries (21).

Noteworthy book included a protocol entitled The Pink Mealy Bug: Protocols for the Protection of Agricultural Production and Trade: The Systems Approach for Quarantine Security (Authors: Gautam RD, Pilgrim RN and V Stewart 2000), The Production Manual CARDI, St Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago, 53p. Developed dossiers for import and release of biocontrol agents for the Caribbean and assisted CABI/FAO in reviewing code of conduct on their import & release. As Professor of Entomology (about 6 yrs) developed/revised PG courses/ curriculum/ academic administrative calendar at IARI as well as several other universities for HRD so as to strengthen IPM programmes. Convened Golden Jubilee Year Convocation-2008 (Students Academic presentation for Merit Medals), PG School, IARI, New Delhi. Organized International Conference on Parthenium: ICP-2010 at IARI, New Delhi as Organizing Secretary during 8-10 Dec 2010. The noxious weed is now emerging global problem and matter of concern over the agricultural trade.

4. Other relevant activities/ scientific recognitions

Awardee of Maharishi Biological Control-2000 conferred by Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi for Research, Extension and Teaching; recipient of IARI Best Teacher Award-2008; Fellow of Entomological Society of India; Fellow of Society for Biocontrol Advancement-from National Bureau of Agriculturally Important Insects, Banglore and many others during active service career. Member, Academic Council of Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, India and examiner of several universities. Advisor in the Interview Boards: Staff Selection Commission, UPSC, Ministry of Human Resource Development, ASRB, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Central Silk Board, Delhi Agricultural Marketing Board, National seeds Corporation, State Agric Univ., IGNOU, Protection of Plant Varieties & Farmers Rights Authority, etc.
