Analysis & Justification of Chosen Idea

I have chosen the desk organizer as it is the most practical idea in terms of size and in terms of the skills and tools required. Furthermore, from a designers point of view, as it is not a very common product it gives me more room for innovation and creativity. My motivation for choosing this idea springs from the fact that organization and time management plays a key role in the life of a student like me therefore I can relate to the project and this would hopefully help me in the process of it. Additionally, I realized that the other 3 ideas lacked such openness and practicality: I have already built a sports organizer; therefore the opportunities for innovation are narrower. In the process last year I realized all the different complications due it greater size and required storage capacity. The shoe rack would be too large in size and extremely detailed to build in the given time period while the needed materials and tools for metals and plastic are unavailable. The problem furthermore is not one that motivates me to innovate and therefore I feel this would hinder me during the project. The TV cabinet would encompass a lot of room for creativity and is a product that I would be extremely motivated to create yet from a builders perspective the task is simply unrealistic given the completion date and the resources available.

Thus, I feel I have made the right choice in trying to tackle a problem that is both challenging yet realistic in its solution.

Areas of Interaction
Approaches to Learning: The product is a desk organizer for students that aims to help students better organize themselves and to make the most efficient use of their learning time. The product which will encompass a todo-list, storage containers, paper prioritizer will also encourage students to find new methods of learning. This will help the students to evaluate their approach to learning. Human Ingenuity: The creation process will allow me to evaluate the impact human creatuions have on society. I will have to observe consequences of my products existence and development and the process by which I design and create the unique product.

Aims
This year my aim with my Design Technology Project is to design and create a unique product that satisfies specific needs and wants and use branding techniques to promote the product to the target market. In my previous design technology project I have not been given this level of freedom to innovate. My aim therefore will be to best utilise this freedom and use innovation to create a unique product. Furthermore as a part of a continuous process ny aim in design technology is to develop the different skills involved including designing, time management and tools usage.

Challenges
This year the project is more time specific and I feel this will be my greatest challenge. Time management is extremely important and is usually the most challenging aspect of the project. Furthermore, replicating my design and plan into the creation process is a defining challenge. Other challenges may include: Staying Motivated and Organized Using the right tools for the specific jobs and using them efficiently Minimizing damages and delays in creation Identifying and collecting the appropriate information, materials and tools

Analysis of Survey (Primary Research)

As indicated below, a brown softwood exterior is the choice that the majority of the sample have chosen while it is recommended that use several techniques namely flyers and word of mouth as they involve a direct contact with my customers. The survey also clarified a few points for me i.e. the clock additional feature has a positive response and so does the lighting feature and therefore I am now sure to accommodate these features.

Yet, I am disappointed that I was not able to collect any substantial ideas for possible features and visual appeal enhancers. I did receive some constructive answers from two distinct interviewees who recommended using the LEDs as a promotional technique while one interviewer requested for a Bluetooth and mobile speaker addition (this is not a realistic target for me to achieve due to the additional skills in electronics required).

Secondary Research
The type of wood I choose mostly depends on its strength, weight and ability to be shaped. My product needs to be lightweight and has to hold and a lot of equipment. There are three different types of wood; softwood (also known as Medium Density Fiber), hardwood and plywood. For my project I will need to use softwood as although it is not the strongest it is the only one that I can shape easily. Also it is lightweight and easy to cut. There are 8 different types of wood joints: From these ones the lap joint, rabbet and dado joints seem the most practical and the simplest types of wood joints. The dado joint is the most

appealing to me due to its simplicity and efficiency. Also the miter joint is the most practical and probably the strongest too. As my task largely involves the shaping of wood I need a variety of saws, joints, files and shaping to tools specialized for the use of Medium Density Fiber. All of which are available in school including the wood and all the tools, while I have many of the tools at home as well. Yet if need arises for extra tools I have visited stores like Ace Hardware and IKEA who sell exclusive wood and wood shaping products and are conveniently located next to each other at Dubai Festival City. These products are fairly inexpensive costing below 100 Dhs in most cases. The majority of the sample I surveyed seemed to think that the clock was a great addition to the desk organizer as it further enhances the products purpose and helps to build a unique selling point which will be immensely pertinent during my brand promotion. Yet, my research demonstrates that the incorporation of a clock in my design will require my acquisition of new electrical based skills, tools and materials (wire, soldering iron, battery, wire cutters etc.). Most designers today, look towards preserving the environment in using energy efficient and biodegradable materials for their products. One such material that I can use for my lighting system would be using LED lamps instead of conventional lamps. Its advantages and disadvantages include:

Low energy consumption retrofit bulbs range from 0.83 to 7.3 Watts Long service life LED bulbs can last up to 50,000 hours Durable LED bulbs are resistant to thermal and vibration shocks and turn on instantly from -40C to 185C, making them ideal for applications subject to frequent on-off cycling, such as garages and basements Good for interior task lighting No infrared or ultraviolet radiation excellent for outdoor use because UV light attracts bugs Safety and environmentally conscious as they contain no mercury and remain cool to the touch Fully dimmable Range of colours can be manufactured There are some current disadvantages to LED lighting:

LEDs are currently more expensive than more conventional lighting technologies, and may be hard to locate LEDs are very heat sensitive. Excessive heat or inappropriate applications dramatically reduce both light output and lifespan

LEDs typically cast light in one direction at a narrow angle compared to incandescent or fluorescent lamps so lenses or reflectors are needed in fixtures to broaden the beam (if desired)

After discussing the issue of colour and visual appeal with several experts and all those questioned and surveyed, it became evident to me that the most desirable colour would be a simple wooden brown as it tends to follow the trend and fits the purpose of the product as a desk organizer. Therefore, it will be easier to make the market relate with the product therefore aid in brand promotion.
