Indication
Lower respiratory tract infections, otitis media, sinusitis, skin and skin-structure infections, and urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by susceptible strains of gramnegative and gram-positive organisms Serious infections and community-acquired pneumonia Recurrent or persistent acute otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, or Moraxella catarrhalis in children ages 2 and younger and in children who have received antibiotic therapy within last 3 months

Mefenamic Acid
For the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, dysmenorrhea, and mild to moderate pain, inflammation, and fever.
Indigestion or heartburn Nausea, with or without vomiting Diarrhea Constipation Unexplained rash Dizziness Headache.
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to mefenamic acid. Should not be given to patients who have experienced asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs. Should not be used in patients with preexisting renal disease. Contraindicated in patients with acute active ulceration or chronic inflammation of either the upper or lower gastrointestinal tract.
It is usually taken with food every 6 hours as needed for up to 1 week. Instruct patients to take NSAIDs with a full glass of water and to remain in an upright position for 15-30 minutes after administration. Caution patient to concurrent use of alcohol with this medication to minimize possible gastric irritation.

Contraindication

Nursing Consideration
Advise patient to take medicine as prescribed. Caution patient to make position changes slowly to minimize orhtostatic hypotension. Instruct patient to avoid concurrent use of alcohol or OTC medicine without consulting the physician. Advise patient to consult physician if irregular heartbeat, dyspnea, swelling of hands and feet and hypotension occurs. Inform patient that angina attacks may occur 30 min. after administration due reflex tachycardia. Encourage patient to comply with additional intervention for hypertension like proper diet, regular exercise, lifestyle changes and stress management.
