Title of Unit: LMS Workshop Instructional Adult Professional Level:

Stage 1 Identify Desired Results

Participants will understand: 1. Blogs and discussion boards can be an effective medium for sharing information on a variety of topics. 2. The importance of expressing and sharing practical easy to implement learning strategies among colleagues. 3. Sharing interpretations of concepts with others often clarifies and deepens understanding of new technology. 4. A virtual classroom can be useful for providing a visual representation (similar to a story board) of course content and expectations for student-to-student, student-to-instructor, and student-to content interactions. 5. A virtual classroom provides an alternative platform for presenting course content that can be utilized as a supplement to face to face instruction. Related Misconceptions:
1. Online learning environments cannot effectively facilitate learning. 2. Student and teachers cannot effectively communicate in a virtual learning environment. 3. Issues surrounding technology management tend to make its use more distracting than beneficial.

Essential Questions
Overarching Questions: 1. How can the increased use of social networks be used by educators to build virtual learning communities? Topical Questions: 1. How can a virtual learning environment be used to supplement the face-to-face learning experience? 2. How can open ended questions or prompts be used to promote discussion in a virtual learning environment? 3. How can designing and organizing a virtual learning environment facilitate instructional design?

Stage 2 Evidence
Performance tasks should include the following elements as indicated by the GRASPS acronym. Student understanding is generally demonstrated by expressing the following facets of understanding (Explanation, Interpretation, Application, Perspective, Empathy, and SelfKnowledge)

Performance Task(s) I. Reflection (Journal/Blog Posting) (individual activity)

Goal: The goal is for participants to express thoughts & feelings related to using new technology. Role: The participants role is to provide feedback, using their experiences to develop ways to promote digital literacy in others. Audience: The audience is restricted to the participant and the instructor. Situation: The participants challenge is to not only demonstrate an ability to use the discussion/blog tool but to appreciate its use. Product Performance and Purpose: The product will be a journal of self reflections regarding the workshop experiences (meta cognition). Standards and Criteria for Success: This performance task addresses the following standard(s): Addresses the following facet(s) of understanding: Explanation self expression Perspective consider the value of the journaling experience from a student and instructor perspective Self-knowledge consider how thoughts & habits affect learning new technology

II. Building an Online Learning Community (group activity)

Goal: The goal is for participants to recognize the value of promoting discussion in a virtual environment. Role: The participants role is to contribute comments/questions(prompts)/responses that will facilitate a discussion within an online environment. Audience: The audience will be fellow workshop participants. Situation: The challenge is to become more aware of the necessity to facilitate discussion rather than assuming it will happen automatically. The participants will be tasked with facilitating the discussion by responding to one or more of their fellow participants questions with both a comment and an additional question. They are also tasked with seeing the value of the platform from both the student and teacher perspective. Product Performance and Purpose: The product will be discussion board postings which model authentic discussion that demonstrate using open ended questions to promote conversation. Standards and Criteria for Success: Each participants postings should be well thought out and thought provoking. Peer Review - Use the rubric provided to evaluate individual participation by evaluating the

FRIT 7738: UbD Stage 2 Staff Development Workshop relative quality of discussion posts. This performance task addresses the following standard(s): Addresses the following facet(s) of understanding: Application-promoting conversation in a new setting Empathy-being attentive and responsive to others opinions/thoughts Explanation-comments demonstrate understanding of digital literacy Interpretation-postings indicate a personal responsibility for the promotion of digital literacy Perspective evaluation of discussion process from both student and instructor viewpoint.

III. Create a Virtual Learning Environment (individual/paired activity)

Goal: Participants will recognize the value to both students and teachers of collecting resources in a virtual classroom for greater accessibility by students. Role: The participants role is to observe the learning environment from both the student and teacher perspective. Peer review group projects using rubric provided. Audience: The audience consists of fellow workshop participants. Situation: The challenge is to create the foundation for a virtual learning environment. Product Performance and Purpose: The product will be the foundations of a learning environment built by the participants during the workshop. Focus will be on determining essential elements and a list of learning objects to be added in ongoing development. Standards and Criteria for Success: The environment should be user friendly (easy to navigate, free of careless errors (i.e. dates)); provide alternative accessibility to classroom resources generally provided during face-to-face interaction. This performance task addresses the following standard(s): Communication and Collaboration Use of digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. a. Students interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media. Addresses the following facet(s) of understanding: Application use of LMS tools to build a learning environment Interpretation consider the design elements required for an effective learning environment Perspective Evaluation from both student and instructor viewpoint Empathy- considering the students requirements Self-knowledge-reflection on experience posted as journal postings
