Darran Furniture Industries, INC.

2402 Shore Street High Point, NC 27263

My name is Angela Davis and I am applying for the Graphic Designer/ Marketing Assistant position. As I was reading the job description I couldnt help but feel that I would be a great fit for the job. As a designer I am very strong in creating effective layouts and paying special attention to every detail. I have previous freelance experience which has helped me grow as a designer but I would like to take on a more challenging position. I do have some experience in social media and marketing. Since 2009 I have been making educational videos on YouTube. As a result of that I have taught myself how to market my videos with various social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. I feel social media is an exciting new marketing tool and I would hope that my knowledge of it would be an asset to Darran Furniture. My educational experience has prepared me to visualize concepts, storyboard ideas and focus on the messages being conveyed in various projects. My classes focused on creating strong memorable imagery and using that to tell a story. This skill set is essential in creating strong visual experiences for viewers. I am an extremely focused person. I learn quickly and I will work hard. Thank you for your time and consideration, Angela Davis

UNIVERSITY: East Tennessee State University COURSE: Vector Imaging PROJECT: Energy Drink Product Development PROGRAMS USED: Adobe PhotoShop, and Illustrator ASSIGNMENT This project focused on developing a brand image for a fictional energy drink. I chose to develop a typographic and logo dominant design Based upon the products physical size I felt it best to develop a design that could be read and recognized easily. I also wanted to incorporate a trompe loeil so I merged the i and the m in impact. The background design was constructed using caffeine molecules I developed in Illustrator. TIMELINE: 3 weeks

UNIVERSITY: East Tennessee State University COURSE: Raster Imaging PROJECT: Create A Poster PROGRAMS USED: Adobe PhotoShop ASSIGNMENT This project was focused on creating an 11x17 poster for a local event. I chose to develop a poster based upon a musical festival in Tennessee called Bonnaroo. Playing upon the diverse musical line-up scheduled to perform I drew the central images in pen, scanned them and added color in Photoshop. In order to balance the typography with the image I went with a non-linear design and created a frame-like text field. I also focused on the hierarchy of the information, making sure to organize it in order of importance. TIMELINE: 4 weeks

UNIVERSITY: East Tennessee State University COURSE: Vector Imaging PROJECT: Software/Game Development PROGRAMS USED: Adobe PhotoShop, and Illustrator ASSIGNMENT The purpose of this project was to develop and design a software box using Adobe Illustrator. The game concept was left entirely up to us. This project was limited to a box template. Upon completion the class had to print out their designs, fold them according to the template and present them as a new game. I chose to create a game for younger children. Keeping that audience in mind I chose a very colorful palette and appealing characters. TIMELINE: 5 weeks

UNIVERSITY: Winston-Salem State University COURSE: Painting II PROJECT: Reproducing Portraits using the Grisaille Technique Media Used: Acrylic Paint, Oil Paint and Liquin ASSIGNMENT: The professor asked the class to reproduce two paintings by a 15th and 16th Century painter. I chose Vermeer and Botticelli because of their ability to cpature light and shadow. These paintings were completed using the Grisaille technique. I began each one with an underpainting and then applying oil glazes in varying colors. TIMELINE: 6 Weeks

UNIVERSITY: Winston-Salem State University COURSE: Senior Seminar PROJECT: Portraits using the Grisaille Technique Media Used: Acrylic Paint, Oil Paint and Liquin ASSIGNMENT: These portraits were completed using the Grisaille technique. I began each one with an underpainting in black and white acrylic paints. Next I mixed oil paints with liquin and glazed over the underpainting. By building the layers with oil glazes it gives the paintings a translucent quality. I chose these two characters from Alice in Wonderland because of their vivid color and design strength. TIMELINE: 4 Weeks

UNIVERSITY: Winston-Salem State University COURSE: Painting II PROJECT: Still Life Using the Impasto Technique Media Used: Oil Paint and Liquin ASSIGNMENT: This still life of a skull was created with the Impasto technique. This technique does not involve an underpainting like the Grisaille technique. It is basically oil painting straight on the canvas. I began by mixing oil paint with liquin and glazed over the background to create a smooth background. Next I began painting the basic shape of the skull using the oil paint colors I mixed. As the paint dried I applied more layers of different colors to help define the skulls details. The opacity of the oil paint and the extended drying time makes this painting and technique quite different than the previous Grisaille works. TIMELINE: 6 Weeks STUDENT WORK OF ANGELA DAVIS

UNIVERSITY: East Tennessee State University COURSE: Figure Drawing PROJECT: Fully Resolve a Human Head Media Used: Graphite, Tortillions and Eraser ASSIGNMENT: This project was designed to introduce facial proportions and shading techniques. I chose to draw Bette Davis based upon the strong layout in the reference photograph. I also liked the contrast between the black and the white. My eye is always drawn to strong contrast. TIMELINE: 2 Days STUDENT WORK OF ANGELA DAVIS

UNIVERSITY: East Tennessee State University COURSE: Figure Drawing PROJECT: Fully Resolve a Human Head Media Used: Charcoal, Tortillions and Eraser ASSIGNMENT: This project was designed to introduce charcoal and colored paper into portraiture. CLIENT: Jack W. Scott Media Used: Paper, Fine Tip Markers and Photoshop PROJECT: A local writer commissioned this graphic design for the cover of his book. He wanted the cover to consist of a shopping cart full of ABC blocks. I began the project by drawing several drafts of the cover and sending them to the client. Once receiving his approval I drew the final draft and scanned it. After this point the rest of the work was achieved using Photoshop. I kept in constant contact with the client, sending him numerous e-mails with different versions of the cover. TIMELINE: 4 Weeks

CLIENT: Susan C. Neely Media Used: Canon Digital Rebel EOS and Photoshop PROJECT: This was a commission for a local musicians cd cover art. Keeping in mind the theme of her cd, which was about changing your future and letting go of your past, I decided to photograph her walking along a railroad track. The front cover portrays her walking towards a new future and the back cover portrays her walking away from the past. I also decided to incorporate the musicians favorite flower onto the actual cd and the inside artwork. All photo manipulation and photography was performed by me. TIMELINE: 2 Weeks
