'f What is Computational Science? /
Computational science is a young scientific discipline that has
established itself as the third pillar of modern science. Next to
theoretical science and experimental science, computational
science involves the modeling, simulation and analysis of
world phenomena through computation.
Computational science will play an important if not
dominating role for the future of the scientific discovery
process. This occurs since modern science has opened up new
windows into the physical and social sciences, earth sciences
and life sciences on many levels of detail (atomic, nano, mezzo
and macroscopic scales).
Computational science has important roles in several areas,
such as:
1. Understanding non-deterministic and chaotic natural
phenomenas that can not be solved with analytical method,
2. Simulation that bridges theory and experimentation,
3. Pre.diction or forecasting,
4. Static and dynamics system modeling,
5. Data calculation, organiza'tion, and presentation.
, Computational Science
In the past decade, subjects which strengthen student's
computational skill have always been an important part of the
curriculums of study programs at Faculty of Mathematics and
Natural Sciences (FMIPA ITB). Each of the study programs
offers at least 10% of Bachelor courses and 20% of Master
courses which heavily contain computational materials.
The research of staffs and students at FMIPA has also
emerged towards a similar trend. The number of publications,
final projects, thesis, dissertation which topics are in
computational science has increased significantl,y in the last
decade.
Additionally, research collaboration between FMIPA's
researchers with their peers in both academia and industries
has also been condljcted. For example, academic collaboration
has been conducted with Japan (Kanazawa Unjversity, Osaka
University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Kyoto Unversity,
Gunma Observatory), Australia (University of Ballarat,
University of Newcastle), Pakistan (School of Mathematical
Science, GC University), and the Netherlands (Twente
University, RuG). In the other end, FMIPA has a strong
industrial collaboration with ALLIANZ, Taspen, Telkom, RC
OPPINET, and CONOCO-Philips.
, Master in Computational Science
Master in Computational Science at ITB equips its graduates
with
Knowledge and comprehensive skill of computational
approach in science,
Ability to develop model, simulation, efficient algorithm, and
optimizatiGn method to solve problems in science,
Ability in conducting interdisciplinary approach in the quest
for solutions of scientific problems,
Skills in several techniques, methods, and tools and the ability
to choose appropriate tools for solving particular problems,
and
Ability to work together with their peers, both in the same or
different areas.
The educational system is conducted progressively and is
based on research.
In the first year, students will learn the fundamentals of
computing from introduction to computational science, to
numerical analysis and software development. In this year
students will also be equipped with the fundamental of science
and mathematics tht will be used in their research .
In the second year, student will apply the techniques and
methods they have already learned to particular problems in
science and mathematics.
Although the traditional workforce for graduates of this
degree is in the area of research and development (both in
universities and research centers), our graduates will have the
skills and competence to enter other workfields such as
insurance, banking, and finance, information technology,
telecommunication, automotive industries, pharmaceutical
and chemical industries, oil and gas industries.
, Double Program
Selected students of ITB and Kanazawa University (Japan) will
have the opportunity to conduct Double Degree Master
Program in Computational Science in ITB and Kanazawa
University.
ITB students will spend up to one year in Kanazawa
University to conduct research under supervision of staffs of
ITB and Kanazawa University. Kanazawa University students
will also have the opportunity to do similar research in ITB.
Staffs of Kanazawa University will teach several courses in ITB
either in person or by using distance learning facilities.
In the academic year of 2009 / 2010, 10 students were
accepted for double degree program (DDP), to do research in
Kanazawa starting from April 2010, In 2010/2011, 11 students
were accepted for DDP. Other students study computional
science at ITB.
I) Requirements.
Students of Master in Computational Science at ITB are degree
holders in science, mathematics, engineering, or other
relevant fields. Students are expected to have adequate
knowledge and ski,IIs in College Mathematics (Calculus, Matrix,
and System of Linear Equations), Elementary Programming
(in any language), and English proficiency.
