INDICATIONS AND DOSAGE

Duodenal ulcer (short-term treatment) Adults: 20 mg P.O., as delayedrelease or oral suspension, daily for 4 to 8 weeks. Short-term treatment of active benign gastric ulcer Adults: 40 mg P.O. once daily for 4 to 8 weeks.

NURSING CONSIDERATIONS
Dosage adjustments may be necessary in Asians and patients with hepatic impairment. Drug increases its own bioavailability with repeated doses. Drug is unstable in gastric acid; less drug is lost to hydrolysis because drug increases gastric pH. Zegerid contains 460 mg sodium per dose in the form of sodium bicarbonate. Look alike-sound alike: Don't confuse Prilosec with Prozac, Prilocaine, or Prinivil.

Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to drug or its components. Zegerid is contraindicated in patients with metabolic alkalosis and hypocalcemia. Use cautiously in patients with Bartter syndrome, hypokalemia, and respiratory alkalosis. Long-term administration of bicarbonate with calcium or milk can cause milk-alkali syndrome.

Tell patient to swallow tablets or capsules whole and not to open, crush, or chew them. Warn patients that Zegerid contains 460 mg sodium bicarbonate per dose. Those following a sodiumrestricted diet should be cautious. Tell patient to empty contents of Zegerid packet into a small cup containing 2 tablespoons of water. Instruct him not to use other liquids or foods. Stir contents and drink immediately. Refill cup with water and drink. Instruct patient to take drug 30 minutes before meals. Zegerid powder for oral suspension should be taken on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before a meal. Caution patient to avoid hazardous activities if he gets dizzy. Advise patient that Prilosec OTC isn't intended to treat infrequent heartburn (one episode of heartburn a week or less), or for those who want immediate relief of heartburn. Inform patient that Prilosec OTC may take 1 to 4 days for full effect, although some patients may get complete relief of symptoms within 24 hours.
